Gentlemen, how kismet you should both mention Shang-Chi; for that is the Marvel movie I'm up to with my kids.

So anyway, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings - 10/10

No I'm not stoned, no I don't care that it isn't the same kind of bone crunching action as proper Hong Kong action movies or the hyper stylisation of mainland Chinese wuxia. But it does each of them just fine, and its got good cast chemistry and Simu Liu in particular bounces of Awkwafina - I count myself among the seventy-seven people on planet Earth who likes her comedic sensibilities - incredibly well.

Loved it, I want the fucking sequel.
I highly respect and love you for it. This is a perfect 👌 10 for me too. Awkafina is fine here, and great in The Bad Guys, but I don't like most of her roles. I'm ready for that sequel too.

Havoc - It lives up to the title! It's basically The Raid meets Run All Night. Which makes sense, because the the director of the former, Gerath Evans, wrote and direct this masterpiece! This is Evans at his peak again. The story simple: Tom Hardy plays a corrupt cop who has to save a corrupt senator's son, for a crime and murder of a triad mob boss who the son and his girlfriend didn't kill. People said there's not enough story, but there is and it works in the movie's favor. It knows how to pace itself, but once the film gets going, it doesn't stop. There is tension in this movie, and that's what I love about Evans film works. The man can do suspense and tension, whether it be action or horror.

See this movie, if you're into his works, a fan of action films, or simple curiosity if you're new to his works. Do note, he is know for ultra violent action, and people in this movie get fucked up! Tom Hardy is a beast in this film, but the two people he's reluctantly protecting don't sit on the sidelines either. Especially the girl, Mia. She knows how to kick ass.
Director of the Raid? Tom Hardy? Forest Whitaker and his weird old man voice even though he looks the same as he's looked for 30 years? That chick from that otherwise godawful fantasy YA show Shadow and Bone but it wasn't her fault it was awful? Timothy Elephant? < 2 hrs?

f*** yeah

This is one of the oldest movies I've ever watched, and a historically significant film in many respects. It's a relic from the dawn of cinema itself, and about a traveling circus full of people with all sorts of disabilities and abnormalities: microcephaly, dwarfism, conjoined twins and so on. The leader of the troupe starts to get seduced by one of the normal performers who just wants his money. For such a controversial movie pushing 100 years old and about such a touchy subject it's aged marvelously well. It shows an incredible level of sympathy and humanity for a group of people towards whom attitudes were nothing short of abysmal at the time. The film never draws overt focus on the abnormalities and presents all of them as peers with the non-afflicted members of the cast (as much as it can in its brief 62-minute runtime). There's some rather impressive filmmaking on display as well for its meager budget (only about 7 million when adjusted for inflation). It being such an old film there's obviously some constraints of the time, because film was still such an unestablished format: the cinematography is very still and plain and the acting can be rather hokey at times.

Part of the hokey acting, and something that I really think lends itself to the film overall, is the fact that Tod Browning used actual circus performers for the roles, not professionally trained actors. It's a shame that the bad publicity led to the film being cut down heavily, and that edited version is the only one that's survived. It also pretty much killed Tod Browning's career.

That I knew, I was more getting at the acting standards of back then still being very much based on theatre, hence some of it feeling rather overwrought at times.

Yep, watched it last night. Was fun.
The one little surprise was when you mentioned that the girl was good in it, I had assumed you meant the cop since she's in the trailer (that's the actress I referenced having been in Shadow and Bone or whatever that shit show was called).
But then the other girl, the girlfriend of the other crook, started whipping out moves with a hatchet and it was indeed a highlight. That whole "I'm not really a fighter but oh actually I am" thing, love it.

And yeah the rest is fine- not essential viewing but I had exactly 1 hour and 40 minutes to kill in between chores and dinner so it was perfect for that.
Very stupidly violent though.

Yep. Mia is the one I was referring towards.

Indeed. My older brother saw the movie first, then my parents, and finally me. My mom, my big brother, and I love this movie. My dad liked it, but he felt the violence is excessive. Not realizing what type movie this is. Apparently he was expecting a regular crime drama with some bits of action. Though knowing him, he wanted to see the movie for Forest Whitaker. Though he did get invested in the plot.

Surprisingly not bad. Predictable, sure, but not bad at all. 6/10. Pugh is alright, Harbour too. The villain is... very dark. Rises above the jank that at least I've come to expect. Effects are fine. Lighting and cinematography leave no impression.

Sinners, 10/10

This is the latest smash hit from Ryan Coogler about a group of vampires invading a bar in the deep south in 1932. There is no end to my joy of being able to use this meme completely literally and unironically:

Like holy shit, this is what movies are all about! It is absolutely amazing from top to bottom, from beginning to end, and what movie buffs go nuts for amidst all the remakes, sequels and cinematic universes. A friend of mine called it "the pinnacle of big budget Hollywood filmmaking" and I agree 100%. It is a singular masterpiece of visual storytelling, music, set design, cinematography, incredible acting and thematic substance. It is just oozing with atmosphere. Michael B Jordan puts in a possibly career-defining performance in a double role as the Smokestack twins. All the characters are extremely well defined and likeable, the setting is realized magnificently, there's tons of tension and engaging drama, and Hailee Steinfeld, wa-wa-wee-wa! The way vampires are depicted also has a bit of its own twist that makes this movie stand out from the rest. But the music is really what drives this film, and it is an absolute marvel. Not only the score itself, but the way the music fades in and out of diegesis and becomes almost a character in itself. There is an especially jaw-dropping scene where past, present and future meld together through music that's presented in such a unique way I genuinely have no comparison for it. Despite it not being a musical, it will be remembered as one of the best music-focused films of the decade.

Some will find the slow burn pacing off-putting, but I was just feasting on the visuals and atmosphere. It also has a bit of a Return of the King problem where it ends like 4 different times, but all of them are engaging and thematically appropriate. Beyond that I can find literally nothing to criticize. Best film I've seen all year, gonna be very hard to top, go see it ten times in a row, and then another ten times next week.
