Disney has just what it takes to make great movies. They know how to deliver the kind of movie Star Wars needs to be: it can't be gritty and all serious, but it also can't be a children's theme-park like Episode I, or even worse, a teen movie like Episodes II and III. It needs to be for everyone, like the original trilogy. Anyway, Lucas will have his hands away, and that's great, thanks Lucas for creating the whole Star Wars idea, but after your initial success the only thing that kept Star Wars from running to the ground was a HUGE fan base that insisted in it's salvation.

My fear is... What happens to the expanded universe? So far most books and comics and games have been canon, that's a LOT of stuff. So much in fact that, IF the 7th movie reboots all EU (or even just the media pertaining events after Episode VI), it would take a lot of balls, and sincerely, I think it would be such a blow on everyone I don't think it could be made... We know so little yet :( Maybe it will be an adaptation of one of the novels, which in my opinion would be the very best course of action.

Obviously, things could go pretty bad, but that's not how I feel... Not that I think it will be an Oscar winning movie, or even a history marker like the original trilogy, but I do believe it will keep the series alive, and return it's pride.

Edit: also, Disney has a LOT of experience in Star wars entertainment already, just check out the gigantic event they threw at the "Disney HQ" last year or something, due to the reformulation of the obsolete Star Tours ride, which by the way is so damn cool now, if you haven't gone to the new Star Tours, get some vacation times and go to Anaheim or Orlando NOW.

Well I don't know if it's a bad or good thing. It could go either way. Disney are going to milk this Mo-fo, but then so did Lucasfilm. Sort of a new boss same as the old boss sort of deal really.

I just hope stuff already in the works such as novels, detours, 1313, etc aren't held up by the change in ownership.

As for Episode VII. I'm waiting for more details before I judge. I like the idea of a new movie. I don't think anyone seriously thought there'd NEVER be another Star Wars movie.

Also remember this means Disney own Indiana Jones, and ILM too.

EDIT: I guess Leia is a Disney Princess now

Well, there goes the Expanded Universe.

On one hand, Star Wars 7. On the other hand, what will it be about?

If it is the Thrawn Trilogy, all is forgiven, but since it won't be, I'm terrified.
Hey hey hey, the Yuuzhan Vong saga would be awesome too! Honestly though, I doubt they will do anything that they would have to bring back the original cast for. Because of that, they will probably do something in the future, after the Luke and friends have died, which leaves that movies ripe with possibilities.

OT: Kind of nervous, kind of excited, and very curious. I can't wait to see what the new film series will be about. It honestly could go either way at this point. Very interesting times for the Star Wars universe ahead, I gotta say. :p
Do you really think that DISNEY is going to make a Star Wars film about psychotic, genocidal masochists who look like a cross between The Thing and a fucking Terminator?

I think that this pretty sums up my reaction in a nut shell.

OT: im wondering how they plan to do a movie will the old cast return?
They've announced that they'll be making Episode 7, 8 and 9. So that sounds very much like sequels rather than a reboot, and may well involve all new characters.

So Lucas raped his own franchise... now there'll be princesses raping it too.
The Avengers turned out just fine. *shrug*

OT: This seems like a positive thing to me. Disney may well make one actually good film (good director, talented cast, etc.) while they re-establish the brand. After that it'll probably go downhill (Pirates of the Caribbean style) but I'm not the sort of person who gets annoyed just because a bad film exists.

I'll take my one decent Star Wars film and treasure it. Fingers crossed for 2015.
Yeah, the Avengers played like the original Star Wars, in terms of entertainment: it's a nice relaxing movie that's accessible to anyone no matter how old/young as long as the person is into that sorta movie. That's where the new trilogy got lost in my opinion, if you look at it as kid it's awesome, if you look at it as an adult... Well, then Anakin becomes Lucifer in a matter of seconds (him getting evil makes sense, but not in such a quick surge of childish tantrums), Jar Jar Binks is created and then abandoned, not even Ewan McGregor manages to act in an believable fashion, meh, I only watch the new trilogy because it's canon to Star Wars, but it's a common event for me to take a nap during those movies lol.

As for the old cast... If the movies take place during the The New Jedi Order (in which case, hire Clive Barker to direct the cenobites... I mean Yuuzhan Vong lol), or forward, then characters are supposed to be old, despite the book covers still showing a young and attractive Mara Jade...

I don't know wat to think about this.
I like Star Wars, but I've got a feeling that the new Star Wars Movie is going to mess up the Expanded Universe.

That's nice.

Yep, I really have nothing more to say. The worst that can happen is George Lucas losing control over the franchise, which...isn't exactly heartbreaking. That and everyone freaked over Disney acquiring Marvel, and not a single one of their fears came true (save Spectacular Spider-Man being replaced by a drastically inferior show). It's not worth worrying about.
QFT. People here seem to forget that Disney have produced some great non-Disney stuff as well, like Tron, the Rocketeer, and of course the Avengers. It comes down to the creative people actually in charge that will define the film, but that said, Star Wars 7 is very obviously a cash grab and definitely being made for all the wrong reasons.

Now the generation that grew up with the Star Wars prequels (which I guess is my generation, since the first movie I watched in cinemas happened to be the Phantom Menace, which I loved as a kid) are about to experience the same hype as the generation that preceded it. Time will tell if we are going to experience the same shock and horror.

Ok, first of all, at the risk of being predictable:

Now, more seriously. Why? Why Episode 7? What is the point? As much as people tend to hate the prequels, the saga as it currently stands tells one consistent story: the rise, fall and redemption of Anakin Skywalker. The story is done, there's no need for more films. What would be gained by adding to that?

Oh wait, I forgot. Money. As if The Avengers didn't earn Disney enough.
As I understand it Star Wars was originally designed as a trilogy of trilogies. The Episodes 1-3 deal with the rise and fall of Anakin. 4-6 deal with Anankin's children and his redemption. 7-9 deals with Han and Leia's children, and the rise of a new Jedi order lead by Luke. That's quite established in the lore, as I remember.

I admit, a few years ago I would have been terrified. But now in a post Avengers landscape, I'm actually a little hopeful. There's a chance that if anyone can turn this geek-property good again, it's Disney.

Besides, now we can see Iron Man vs Darth Vader!

Although on the subject of Episode 7 part of me hopes they'll look to Timothy Zahn's Heir to the Empire, the unofficial Episode 7. There's a lot of good stuff which might do well on screen, *cough* Mara Jade *cough*.

If they do make more films I hope to God that they ignore the Extended Universe because it's a mind-bendingly awful hive of insanity and hack-work that makes microclodians, Darth Binks and the everything else in Ep I to III look sane and well written.

I must admit that I've only read a couple of the books (that was more than enough) and read about the rest on Wookiepedia.

Huh while most may look at this with rose tinted glasses I'm going to go down the cynical path and say that the movie series is now as buggered as the Extended universe. No excuse me while I drink myself to death.

At first I was really excited about this. Then I got on the Internet and realized what a bunch of negative pricks there can be on the Internet. Now I'm less excited but still optimistic. More games, more toys, more interesting visual elements to expand our imaginations. Star Wars has had some really low moments, surely it can't be worse than those? But anyway, apart from this post, I'm going to refrain from talking about it on the Internet because people will just be negative about anything, (despite having never created anything of worth in their entire lives), and it will just bring down the quiet excitement I have for this development.

This is definitely a good thing. Lucas won't be butchering his own creation anymore! And if we check what Marvel did with Avengers we will at least have an entertaining movie, with great characters and CGI that's not crappy. That's what the original trilogy was about. There's no way they can make anything worse than the prequels.

And I'm also excited about Lucasarts because 1313 is probably going to be one of the last AAA crappy Star Wars games. Now they can focus on what made them great in the first place. They can let Telltale make a new Monkey Island game. We can get a new Day of the Tentacle, a new Loom... Don't touch Grim Fandango though! Although I wouldn't mind a remake or special edition. We could even get a Star Wars adventure game which is something I don't get why they never did.

I just hope they start making Episode VII soon enough, so we may get it for 2015 and that it's more like the original trilogy brought up to date. And they have to bring back Mark Hamill and Harrison Ford. And Carrie Fisher back wouldn't bother me either.

And we will get the TV series at some point because with Lucas it was never going to get made until he could make more crappy CGI or something. I hope we get a Monkey Island and Day of the Tentacle cartoon too. How amazing would that be?

Anyway, what ever they do, this must be the first scene of Episode VII. Luke gets to the Tatooine cantina looking pretty much like Obi Wan when he was last with him there. And who's next to Luke? Jar-Jar Binks! There's a fight and some criminal start shooting and Jar-Jar gets blasted and killed by them. Luke looks from the distance sit in the bar. Then the fight stops and everyone gets back to what they were doing before. The band starts playing again. It would be a hommage to the original trilogy and a big, big fanservice that would indicate that this is the real thing, nothing like the shitty prequels.

i honestly wouldn't count on it. the star wars franchise have been so raped (there really aren't any other word in the English language the "raped" that defines the franchise now) that it will be hard to recover. sure kids are going to buy it. i mean kids are stupid. they don't see quality. the series will continue til we finally face doomsday but all the quality and grace of star wars died around 7 years ago.
Nah.

The reaction to this announcement was overwhelmingly positive - there's definitely a need for more SW, which is what Iger pointed out.

Making SW into a James Bond-like franchise is nothing but a good thing. There's pent-up demand for more movies, and the current crop of work coming out of Lucasfilm/Lucasarts just isn't cutting it.

The possibilities are endless - you could have the SW television series, new installments being helmed by different directors (I'm sure Spielberg, Kevin Smith and Brad Bird are all chomping at the bit to direct a film) and tons of tie-in materials. Sure, you may have the odd stinker, but considering how much potential there is, you're bound to get some great films out of the deal.

There's still quality out there, and I think audiences recognize that. People scoffed at Disney when they bought Marvel, and look how that worked out for them. Avengers alone recouped their investment. Now Disney has access to Star Wars, Indiana Jones and the "android/droid" trademark for a mere pittance. The sky's the limit, and the audience will be there.

Star wars on the Disney Channel?! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!

Then again, maybe Battlefront 3 will be released finally, it's been complete for the last 3 years!

Downside is, i can't see Disney doing a Dark Lord Triology from the Old Republic. Though NYT best sellers are dominating with Dark Lord Titles.
