Disney Wants to Release a New Star Wars Every Year Indefinitely

To be fair, Disney is responible for the Marvel Cinematic Universe

If Disney hadn't made the marvel movies what they are, I would have discounted this outright. Even so, I can't help but be skeptical. But hey, if they can bring us something equal to Captain America 2 or Guardians of the Galaxy it'll be totally worth it.

And as others have mentioned, nothing disney does can be worse than what lucas was doing. Although the higher cost of all star wars toys is kind of pissing me off (the second the disney logo hit, everything went up 15-20%).

I'm still cautiously looking forward to The Force Awakens, But Star Wars (as well as Marvel, as much as I love those movies right now) could definitely go Assasins Creed on us, and it almost inevitably will at some point. The question is, how long will it take?

I'm sorry, but back when the Prequels came out all I ever heard from Star Wars fans was how much the movies sucked, not because they were bad, but for contradicting EU books and comics. I witnessed an hour long rant about how George Lucas betrayed everyone by including Guido, and how that ruined the comics and novels he's been reading that chronicled his live's saga.

Oh, and every time I check something on Wookipedia, every article I've ever looked up has a section of how a novel/ cartoon/ comic/ game/ movie contradicts parts of the backstory, or how the creative teams knowingly ignored pre-established material because it came in the way of telling their own story.

So, you claiming that the EU was this magical perfect thing is just the same as someone claiming that Batman Arkham Knight had a flawless PC port.

Firstly Episodes 1,2 and 3 weren't poor because they contradicted the EU, they were poor because they contradicted Episodes 4,5 and 6*. Secondly I never claimed the EU was in any way perfect, which is why I said I'd be happy if it were streamlined, but there's a huge difference between streamlining source material and ignoring it completely.

Let's face it. A lot of the lore of the EU was utter crap. I say this as a major Star Wars fan who grew up with the original trilogy. I have read almost every single book of it and re-read the good ones numerous times (i.e. Anything written by Zahn) but there is absolutely no way that I would want to see a movie that tried to incorporate all of that. The original actors are about 30 years older than in ROTJ, so that would be somewhere around just after the Yuuzhan Vong war or getting into the Dark Nest trilogy if they kept that same time frame. Do you really want to hear Han tell someone that Chewbacca died when a moon fell on him to explain the lack of his presence to those who didn't read the books? It would feel cheap and pointless.

While I regret the loss of some of the EU (Thrawn trilogy and X-Wing series), the EU as a whole was just a jumbled mess that is better put out to pasture. If there's a few cameos of characters thrown into the new movies as a nod to the EU fans, great, but trying to fit all the crap in just for the sake of continuity really isn't worth it.

True, but see above comment re streamlining. There ended up being a lot of material written for the EU, and some of those writers were better than others, but just because the EU needed trimming does not mean it should have been discarded completely. I dunno, I'm just not keen on seeing the likes of Thrawn, Jade or Karrde popping into films as fan-service cameos.

Ultimately I'm interested to see the new trilogy, and I'll head into the cinema to watch them with an open mind (alright, 80% open) but this yearly release schedule for upcoming films after 7,8 and 9 has me a little worried that we'll end up getting quantity over quality.

I read the source article, and there doesn't seem to be any proof that this is going to be a thing. It talks about a lot of things, but in the end there's no given proof that it's been greenlit or anything. The only thing that says it's gonna happen is "Well, look at Marvel/DC/Transformers! They're doing it, so popular wins, right?" That, ladies and gentlemen, is what I believe is a Bandwagon Fallacy - everyone else is doing it, so it must be right. Either that, or slippery slope in saying that it's only a matter of time.

I mean, c'mon - the article linked provides more evidence of a new Indiana Jones film than it does of a serialized Star Wars. Let's keep our heads, shall we?

Agreed, this is pure rumor if I ever saw one. If true to an extent, it could mean some interesting films, but like all things, too much and you can potentially kill your franchise. We'll just have to wait and see.

It's been owned by Disney since 2009. The recent Marvel films have been the product of Disney. This is just more of them applying that same business model. Which everyone seems to be happy to lap up when it's more Marvel films.

Source material? The movies are the source material, the EU were derived from the movies, the movies have always been the main thing, and never cared for the EU. The first ever book in the EU was imminently ignored by the second movie.

Star Wars has continued to make more money then physically exists on Earth, so maybe they have the right idea after all.

Fun fact, apropos of absolutely nothing...I saw an infographic a few days back estimating Star Wars lifetime earnings as a franchise at 9 billion. Which seemed quite low, so I checked again and found a higher number...28 billion. Blizzard's "World of Warcraft" is estimated to have made some 15 billion to this point in time (~10 years). Which I find staggering.

Agreed, particularly since this news was announced shortly after Disney's purchase of the IP, and no one seemed particularly surprised at the time. I have no idea if everyone experienced collective amnesia or what happened.

Given Disney's treatment of...and success with...their Marvel franchise, this was always the most likely outcome. And as people rushed to point out to me when I was moaning about Ant-Man 2 and over-saturation, you don't have to go see them. You can't get over-saturated by something you're not watching. Part of the issue with super hero films is that between Marvel and DC and the individual Spider Man and X-Men franchise holders, not to mention whatever abortions the company holding the Fantastic Four rights felt like belching out at any given moment, it seemed like the ONLY tent-pole movies we were getting any more were super heroes. We weren't talking one a year, it was like six to eight a year, and few or not alternatives. I'm pretty sure the public can endure one Star Wars film. And "one a year" will probably end up being closer to one every 1.5-2 years.

Marvel is Disney.

It's been owned by Disney since 2009. The recent Marvel films have been the product of Disney. This is just more of them applying that same business model. Which everyone seems to be happy to lap up when it's more Marvel films.

Owned by Disney but Disney mostly keeps their hands off of the company that seems to be making money just fine without intervention. Mostly everything you've seen from Marvel is still what they would have done otherwise and Disney is just reaping the rewards of owning the company that has some of the best toy potential out there.

Well, probably sans the cartoons airing on Disney Channel and such. Actually, that ties into what I said so... I don't know anymore.

What made the series great was campy actors performing in a hybrid of spaghetti Western clones and Samurai clones with space combat by via WW2.

It has nothing to do with the frequency of the movies. The original trilogy were brilliant B-movie camp.

I liked Star Wars once. Now I despise it. And there's one simple reason for it: Overexposure. If it went silent inbetween movies, I probably wouldn't be complaining, but that doesn't happen. It's CONSTANTLY there.

I want a twenty-year moratorium on all things Star Wars. No movies, no games, no toys, nothing.
