Here, guys: humor about 4.0, in case you haven't seen it yet.
D&D Insider Presents: Monster of the Fourth Edition [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4UqFPujRZWo]
Whoa! That's animated by Adam Phillips! He did the Bitey of Brackenwood series over at Newgrounds. Some of the most amazing Flash animation I've ever seen... interesting that he's got enough renown that Wizards of the Coast would ask him to do some animation for them...

Anyway, back on the DnD topic:

Im grumpy cos they are taking away the two things I adore.. Gnomes and Bards.
Oh, damn, they are taking away Bards, aren't they. Hm. Gnomes I'll have no trouble missing, but Bards... huh. They do seem kinda like an archetype that they're failing to capitalise on. Perhaps he'll be in the DM Guide?

...

Hang on a minute. Monks aren't in the players' handbook either! Blast you, Wizards!!

That said, I kinda like the way they've got 3 tiers, with prestige classes being at Paragon and Epic tiers. They've still not revealed what's going to be in those tiers yet, as far as I know, so perhaps Bard will be a Paragon-tier class? Hopefully it'll be a Heroic-tier class in another book, but there's always the possibility it's still in the PHB.

To me, DnD is supposed to represent an archetypal kind of fantasy setting in its core books. Not Dragonborns and Tieflings and cool maneouvres given to every class so that they don't need to ever use their base attack. While supplements tend to drive the game towards kooky fantasy and whacked out powers the core book should be a bastion of standard fantasy.
That's fair enough. But it's not like you can't keep playing 3.5. I mean, I don't mind the idea of extra races, especially the Tiefling, which I always thought should be a more prominent race in DnD, but I'm mixed on how the simplifying will go. Is it going to be better that you get 3 powers instead of a wealth of them? I dunno. Giving the Warlock a spell with unlimited uses at range kinda just gives them an arcane-based ranged weapon, doesn't it?

Either way, I'll be keeping a close eye on 4th Ed, to see how it turns out.

I played D&D in college and then AD&D later, maybe '82 through '90 or '95. Through second addition.

No time for random encounters, roll on the wandering damage table. Ooh, tough one; roll all your dice and take twice that much damage, then roll twice on the random limb loss subtable. (DM's got a hot date.)

Oh yeah, gotta watch out for that. Good thing I don't care for 'blue raspberry' kool-aid.

On a less sarcastic note, I made the NPC already, as well as a few others. He's not as optimized as some of the party, but hey, they're meant to defeat him after all.

Yeah 4th ed is looking really bad. Its been a running joke in my group for awhile now. I've been stocking up on sourcebooks (Call of Cthulhu, Shadowrun, thinking of getting Pirates of the spanish main so if anyone knows what its about that'll be awesome) so when wizards take over the rpg world I will be ready XD
I gotta learn more about hacking in Shadowrun. But from what I see you can't let me do it on my own like last play. The DM (GM?) needs to actually draw it out like a fight. Instead of enemies I fight firewalls and agents. It could get complicated but it would be really fun if next time people got into it. As for Cthulhu, (insert other friend here) and I were disscussing Thursday nights maybe?
Yeah that makes a lot more sence when you think about it.. You could be trying to open a door and fighting off agents and junk while we fight off security guards! Rad!

Yeah im good for thursdays.. Uni might change that but we'll see how it goes. We can share the keeper (CoC version of GM) role so we all get to play and stuff
What is this? Some CoC game in the works on these here Escapist lands? Cthulhu demands entry!
Or are you two RL friends, invading our anonymous conversations?
Yeah, we know each other. But I think I might kick up a CoC theam for the next lynching RP... but keep it on the down low. Shh.

Game on the boards'd be interesting... except that I'm in GMT+8, and I somehow doubt that everyone interested in this will be in a nearby time zone.

That's my exact timezone I believe, and PR and (I imagine) zen are (I think) only a couple of hours -ve from that.

Hey thats not a bad idea!

Im sure we can still manage a PlayByPost.. I'd love to join in!
yeah, so would i, even though ive never played DnD before (in my area its seen as the very depths of geekiness. and most of the gamers are the kind of adrenaline junkies who would kill everyone they found) so yeah, i would need to get copies of the books...somewhere...

WELL.
Any moderately sized city should have the books available at SOME kind of store. Even Borders stocks up on those things. But if you're not living in such a city or I'm wrong with that generalisation there are alternatives.
1)All of the basic (unfluffified) rules are legally available online thanks to Wizards of the Coast. The Standard Reference Document, as it's called, can be found here: http://www.systemreferencedocuments.org/35/sovelior_sage/home.html
2)If the base rules aren't enough for you the books can be ordered online, and cheaper than you could find them at bricks and mortar stores.

Hm. Your forum profile says you're in Australia, so if you're in GMT+8... then you're probably in the same city as me. Not a lot of people I know on the internet come from places in this state that aren't Perth. By which I mean I know one, and he lives in Perth now.

Anyway, a play-by-post would be interesting. I've not played a lot of DnD, but know how the D20 system works. We'd have to pick a good night to play... preferably after the exams I have in 2 weeks?

Career DM here. I forget how many years I've been playing, but from the start it's been pretty much as DM. My group of friends started playing all at once and I got to be the DM because nobody would trust anyone besides me to do it right (as in, they figured I was the least likely to kill all their characters with bizzare circumstances whenever I decided they'd gone for too long without rolling up a new one). Plus I have always loved coming up with original worlds. I've never really felt comfortable DMing in a world that someone else created. I always worry that I'm not using the material the right way, if that makes any sense.

I've been a PC only rarely, most recently in a GURPS Deadlands campaign. Different game, so I won't go into detail.

A play-by-post game here would be interesting, though I'd like a delay of two weeks for the same reason as Fenixius. We can use that delay to set the stuff up. Who's going to DM it?

I just started playing and I love it, but our local DM has some...issues with continuing a game. We've started new games in about 5 out of the 7 sessions we've played.

"You're characters are too weak!" (new game/characters)
"You're characters are too strong!" (new game/characters)
"I feel like playing Star Wars DnD!" (new game/characters)
"I'm bored!" (new game/characters)
ect.
Now we're doing a pirate campaign with a large group, so it may last longer.

As for my character, I always play a neutral chaotic catgirl swordsage.

Still have the Basic set from 1982. (I was a little late getting to it)

Don't really play it anymore because our group's moved onto the newer systems.

The monster manual will probably have rules for playing Gnomes as a PC race.
As far as Druids go... They are no more! My two favorite classes were taken out for 4th edition, and now I find myself remiss to upgrade.

They're not "taken out" they're just not base classes anymore, meaning we'll find them in PHB2 or other supplements. So we won't have the Druid, Bard, Sorcerer, or Barbarian right off the bat, but in another month or so. Things aren't "gone," just moved around a bit. I'm a huge Sorcerer fan myself, so I wasn't too happy at first when I discovered it wasn't in the PHB. However, they're tweaking the spellcasting ability for Sorcerers so they're more uncontrollable, more like wild mages, and I'm really not too sure how i feel about that, lol.

Does the updated Warlock seem too powerful to anyone else, or just me?
