I think the avatar is like your face on the Escapist, in that it's what people see first of you. So yeah, I think that avatars do matter, as they distuinguish you from everybody else on the website.
Agreed.

And why complain when my avatar can become a visual manifestation of all the sillyness I see?

*facepalm*

I tend to ignore anyone who has Zero Punctuation or Fallout (the ones with cartoon guy, they irritate me) avatars. I take it as a sign that they're new and haven't had time to pick an avatar that's unique to them.

I also find it easier to remember someone if they have a cool avatar.

I concur. I don´t let avatars interfere with how I read posts, at least I try to avoid it. Instead, avatars tell me something about the people posting in here. It´s always nice to communicate with someone who has a face, of some sort. There are some users whose avatar I immediately recognize, but whose name I still can´t remember.

So, avatars don´t matter when reading a post, but they are essential when judging posters; What kind of a people they are.

I remember some posters names, but I mostly remember avatars - which is why I get confused when certain people keep changing theirs!
That's why my avatars always contain a stickperson in it!

But on Topic, I do usually remember people based on their avatars. It keeps it organized and lets me know who to avoid and whatnot.
