Do graphics ever stop you from playing a game?

I would say it depended on whether the poor graphics impact on the playability of a game. However the most important element is the game play. I still go back and play Doom regularly because I love the game play and level design, even though the graphics are ancient compared with modern games.

If graphics are the reason you game, you are sad.
Making over generalized opinions can be seen as sad, as well.

Has bad graphics turned me off to games? It has to be in a time based context. I cannot play PSone style games now, at all. Yuck. Bad 3D < Ok 2D < Ok 3D < GREAT 2D < Amazing 3D. If it was back when I had an N64, it wouldn't have bugged me the least bit.

Was I more interested in Crysis due to the Graphics? Very much so. Graphics are important. Look at Oblivion, it looks nice, but the stiff animation can be a major turn off where as in Assassins Creed, a game I dont like for the gameplay, is very nice too look at because of the art style and the fluid animation that makes the character's movements look real.

Will bad graphics hold me from playing a game? Yes. Will great graphics, be it 2D or 3D make me want to play one? Yes. If the gameplay subsequentially sucks, will I stop playing it? Assassin's Creed anyone? Glad I borrowed it, lol.

Look at Braid on the 360 and soon to be PC. If you just manipulated blocks on platforms, the puzzles would still be great, but thanks to the amazing hand drawn 2D + music make it a definate work of art.
The counter balance is CaveStory. Aestheticall pleasing 2D that's fluid and doesn't look bad, but a great game due to gameplay and story.

To me graphics are not the most important thing i a game at all. Story, game-play, and even sound take higher priority. Never have I been turned off from a game for it low quality visuals or something. I still play NES games in all their 8-bit glory since they are still FUN games. When I do assess the looks of a game, I do not look at how good they are but rather is it the right art-style for the game. The esthetic aspect of it all not how cool looking. The artistic approach towards the game is how i Judge graphics. I mean I would hate to play a mario game that looked realistic because its not fitting (bad example i guess but you get the point)

There's been a lot of talk about remaking FFVII for the PS3 but I believe that an FFVI remake would be far more important.
The have been talking about an updated FFVII remake since before the PS2 was released. I wish people would just let it die. FFIX was better anyway (for most people I talk to). And no, thats not due to graphics.

The only time graphics stops me playing a game is when said graphics start to hamper gameplay. So for example a glitchy bit of collision detection that prevents me going down the corridor I need to go down through to complete the mission. A black hole in the floor texture that is an insta-death if you fall through it, and so on.

No it doesn't. i still play games from the mid 90s on my PC from time to time so I certainly don't have a problem with that.

Er, who said anything about that?

I thought I made it clear that I just randomly don't like 2D MMOs.

Not so much technically, but I find the aesthetic beauty of a game can be a make or break for me. I don't care when it comes to ultra bump-maps and photo-realistic polygons, but a game has to have its own unique atmosphere (Rainbow Six, Final Fantasy 9) or I quickly lose interest in it (Call of Duty, Star Ocean)

The Escapist has to be the stronghold of the last people who enjoyed FF9.

That game was terrible. :(

Morrowind.

I played oblivion which seems really good. Then I tried morrowind to see what the hype and fuss (supposedly better) was supposed to be.

I died. Within just 30mins.

Everything look fugly, and the combat system was worse than oblivion, but that's simply because i was used to oblivion

Moral of the story: Never play a seqeul before playing a prequel unless you are willing to give up on the latter

I would hope the PSP got the FFVII Port/polish. DS cart could not hold that big of a game and there wouldn't be any cut scenes. Even modern compression couldn't save that.

I consider 8,9,X-2,XI to be all complete travesties that miss their marks.

I can't play Oblivion. It has the worst NPC faces in any game ever created. I enter a building, walk up to an NPC... and there goes my immersion. There's a huge lack of artistic direction in most games, but Oblivion is hideous.

Short answer Yes

Long answer No

While I can't stand old graphics (2600-N64) the great games (pong, pacman, mario) have been remade with new graphics or at least in a better resolution (480P Mario 64)

The DS Cartridge could easily go up to 8+GB. SD and Micro SD can go as high as 4GB, SDHD can do 16+GB. The mp3 devices for the DS prove the machine capable of SD format, and 7 was only 3 regular format CDs, so what, under 1.5GB.
But the carts actually used are 128MB.

i can put up with a lot from games, i dont mind the graphics being bad if the story telling, gameplay and atmosphere can make up for it, thats why i love games like Doom 3, Bioshock, System Shock 2 and quake 4, because even though my pc can handle them, i still have to turn down the graphics a little for the gameplay to be smooth, except system shock, and for all this, even though i feel the game is laughing at me for being poor, i still get a kick out of them, especially if the game doesnt have the same voice actors as Capcom employ for Resident Evil

Yep, which is a shame because of this:

Not Soliciting, but SERIOUSLY. 1GB for $4. There is no excuse to use 128Mb cartridges. I hope the next PSP is not drive based.
