Do graphics ever stop you from playing a game?

I can't believe I'm going to admit this here... I can't get through Fallout. I've tried a few times too.

Before I get flogged though, I've played through Grim Fandango about 2,000 times, about 50 of those being in the last year.

I'm totally gonna get banned for dissing Fallout... But for some reason I find that game just a tad too ugly. So yes, I guess it can make a difference.
Well, you and me both then. And I don't think they ban people for reasonably claiming that they don't like a game on here. Unless the game's Grim Fandango, natch... :)

I cant stand games with graphics from the era where games were going between Doom-esque 3D to Half-Life looking 3D. (I'm looking at you Descent and Jedi Knight) Please don't lynch me!
I tried to like them, I really did! But... they made me feel nauseous.

Besides that I'll play anything. Unless its text based.:p
I totally agree. I have no problem playing old sprite-based games, but the early polygon-based games are really difficult to play. I mean, I can play Chuckie Egg, and accept that the sprites are simplified graphical representations of a person, evil ostriches and so on. But in that period, the late nineties and early noughties, the games are trying to look realistic, but everyone looks like triangle people: it's quite distracting. But it's easier with games that I played at the time; for some reason I can play them looking through the eyes with which I first played them.

Disagree, very strongly disagree. FF7 had a better storyline and a much more effective class/ability system, not to mention it featured the single best soundtrack of all Final Fantasy games to date. The Materia Grid in FF10 and the job system in FF6 were the only two systems superior to FF7, and no Final Fantasy has ever had such spectacular summons...
All opinion. If you say something like, "no Final Fantasy has ever had such spectacular summons," support it. I, personally think that the FF8 summons wonderful, but that is because I particularly like the art style of the monsters in the game. I adore the elaborate headdresses of many of the GFs,(Diablo, Ifrit, Bahamut) as well as the fluid, dramatic movements. (See Shiva's initial appearance, then her breaking away from the ice. The tassle-like wings of Quetzocoatl swinging in a manner that demonstrates their weight.)
In comparison, FF7's Summons, which are an acceptable paralell to the GFs of the name-only sequel move very stiffly in comparison. In Ifrit's summons, he charges foreward, leaving a trail of fire behind him. There is no animation while he moves swiftly foreward, and, rather than acknowledge that he just attacked the enemies, he simply disappears off-screen. During Kujata's summon sequence, the beast remains stationary for six seconds, then simply vanishes in a moment. This sudden disappearance, and motionless period suggest that the sequence was altogether unfinished. A series of summons, featuring various forms of Bahamut, all have a dramatic stage, but the dragons do little but float, move their wings slightly, then hold their mouth open while a powerful blast charges in front of their gaping maw. The Bahaumut of FF8, in contrast, demonstrates a recoil from each of the several blasts he delivers through his body jolting with each bolt. He then mimics the movement of the bahamuts of FF7, but once agian shows a recoil effect.

Yeah. That's how one defends something completely opinionated in an academic manner. Because you were so general about what you had said, it would be unfounded and inappropriate for one to defend FF7 with the fact that it was developed only a few years earlier.

I know that may have seemed like a flame, but I was not trying to insult Khell_Senett. This goes for everyone (especially me): have a reason for your opinions and share it. People at the Escapist are smart, they will understand if you give an explanation.

(OK, so this post is really about me trying not to go crazy and accept an "F" on an art history course that has been driving me up the wall for over half a year. I just found out that I'm going to have to toss 11 pages of a research paper out. I'm slightly postal right now... o.- )

I still play Doom so no graphics really don't bother me unless it's a game that was just released within a six month peroid then I get pissed.

Graphics stopped me from playing Space Giraffe... as I wrote after trying the demo, it looked like playing Tempest while staring into a strobe light; the graphics hindered gameplay too much.

I don't object to old-school graphics, just badly-executed graphics.
