Do "Nerds" Not Enjoy Sports, Or Just Not Mainstream Ones?

I'm a nerd that dislikes sports. I think it's because 1. I've always had a hard time connecting with non-nerds. Especially "macho guys". Sports simply attract the "wrong" sort of crowd. 2. I've never been good at sports and I hate running around.

I tried to like sports when I was little, because I wanted to fit in I guess? But it never really "stuck".

As a long time nerd myself, I can safely say that I do NOT enjoy sports. I don't know why I don't and other people do, or vice versa, I just can't get into them. Occasionally, when I have nothing else to do, I'll watch a little football with my dad... and become thoroughly bored.

If I know the rules, I'm okay with sports.

Football bores me to tears.

Soccer is an exception. I have no clue what is going on half the time, but things are happening all the time.

I'm a nerd. I also love sports.

Football (both versions), baseball, basketball, tennis, hockey. I love watching them, playing them, cheering for and against teams. People who hate playing and watching sports have to be miserable. :3

Yes. I have been a Steelers and Pirates fan my whole life. (Betcha can't guess where I grew up near.) NO and Seattle are two teams I enjoy watching during football season. Seattle and Baltimore are my go-to baseball teams during the season, but I try to watch as much as I can. I also golf and do watch it regularly. Used to skateboard when I was younger till my knees started hurting a lot. Still watch it on ESPN when it's on.

I mean, I play sports. I play lacrosse and some golf/tennis, but I wouldn't consider myself a sports "nerd." Nerds do enjoy sports, just sometimes not in the traditional sense. I hate watching, but I LOVE playing.

I can stand to watch them but I have zero inclination to watch them if it's not a game involving a team from my city or college. I never watch them unless someone prods me to. I'm not a competitive person by nature. I've got myopia and poor sinuses so I was never good at active outside things. I did martial arts but most of the time it's not hard on endurance. Logically I see how sports have interesting strategy elements but they just don't appeal to me on a visceral level. I like playing tennis, does that count?

I am English and I grew up with all the normal sports for this country but slowly I became bored with them. I now love American sports I even play American football which must be quite rare because whenever I speak to most people about here in England they don't even know that it's played in this country.

Well, I (like most people here) am some kind of nerd but I hate most sports, to watch or play, especially when physical exertion is required. I don't like football ("soccer" or American), rugby, any striking and fielding, athletics, running, tennis, rowing etc., the list goes on. I do, however, LOVE archery and have been doing it for a good couple of years now (I've only got any good at it over the last few months). Freestyle recurve target (Olympic discipline), in case you were wondering, I'm British so bowhunting is banned here (not that people seem to mind) and there tends not to be much field or clout shooting at university.

I only ever watch the World Cup, and am only interested otherwise in fencing or non-grappling martial arts. Due to a small national pride, and I fence.

I'm a nerd... but I watch Australian Football. Been raised watching it, and still get excited every September when the Grand Final (Our equivalent of the Super Bowl) is on. And then once it's done, I probably go and play my 360 all afternoon or play Magic the gathering with some friends. I don't think sport and nerdiness is mutually exclusive... I think it's like everything... Everyone is different.

I have nothing against "sports", but most of what people categorize as sports are things that don't interest me in the slightest. MMA can get my attention in spans of about five to seven minutes, and I love paintball, laser tag, that sort of thing. But football, baseball, soccer, are just about the dullest things I've ever seen on television.

Of course nerds enjoy sports. Nerds are people, and people enjoy sports.
I know of 2 casters for SC2 enjoy the hell out of baseball and football, I know a player that watches a lot of rugby and soccer (even plays soccer himself), and I enjoy watching Hockey. Hell, one of the casters compares SC2 to football all the time, and his analogies work. I really don't care for football, but his analogies work, lol.

Edit: related, there are quite a few games that are based on sports or have rules from sports, so it would make sense for "nerds" to enjoy sports as well. I am currently playing Mario Tennis in between loading screens for Halo 4.

I never enjoyed sports at all as a child. Playing or watching. Now, I can stand watching a game of football (Australia Rules) or two, but I get bored of it after that.

Oh yay! Another Vikes fan! Up top!

No, but seriously I think there are plenty of nerds that love sports. I love football. My dad loves football. His friends love football. We all tabletop role play together. I play Pokemon and Skyrim. Lord of the Rings is one of my favorite film/book series. Sports and nerd-dom are not mutually exclusive things.

I'm pondering this question as I listen to my oldest brother clearly enjoying (American) football, a sport which I am bored to tears by 99% of the time.
I never walked into school or work and said "Hey guys, how bout them Giants?". Growing up in a rural town, pretty much all anyone talked about was sports, so I was usually quiet and off in my own world for these talks.

But that's not to say I don't like sports. I prefer rugby to football, hockey to baseball, and MMA to basketball. When the World Championships for judo comes on, I watch with rapt attention.

So what do you guys think? Do us "nerds" not like sports, or do we just like different ones?
Huh I have never met anyone who enjoys watching Judo who isn't a Judoka.
