The term dexterity does not specifically refer to the hands either. The term implies a generally high level of ability, particularly in terms of flexibility, speed, and/or agility. and can be used for just about any activity, from charismatic speech to technical thinking to acrobatics.

The base term dextrous is a reference to either ability or the right side, (as opposed to the left) depending on context.

Now, MANUAL dexterity just refers to the hands, but that's a bit more defined.

P.S. I think Stephen Hawking would disagree with captcha on that one.

Bahahaha, you are a bad person for that last sentence. So am I for laughing.

Dictionary.com's reference for ambidextrous was listed as first for dual-wielding, second was skill, and third was...uh...I forget.
The third usage is for double dealing, one of the original uses of the word in Ye Olde English was for a judge or other official that accepted bribes from opposing sources.

I enjoy Ultimate Frisbee sometimes. I also like tennis, but I suck at it more than almost anything.

::Edit:: Oh, you meant watching sports.

No.

I grew up with parents really into baseball, so I've grown a fondness for it. It's really the only sport I know anything about and am not completely bored by. My dad though is really into football, and I for the life of me, can never get into it. I grew up with a sister 10 years older than me who was really into Star Wars and video games, and I have fond memories of playing sonic games on our Genesis and FFVII and VIII on our PS1. I credit her with my nerdiness and love of video games and especially Star Wars.

I like American football, football (what we Americans call "soccer"), Hockey, curling, and golf, it is all a matter of taste. In my experiences, being a nerd dose not normally sway opinion, about sports, and I can enjoy any sport as long as I am in good company.

We are untouchable this year. Mand?ukić is killing the nine spot.

On topic:
I think sumanoskae has a very valid point. Nerd is a very ambiguous term, that doesn't strictly apply to video games.

I think why they tend to be separate, is because in most high school social blocks between the sport people, and the video game people don't really overlap. At least it was in when I was in high school.

I used to play hockey, right and left forward, but mostly goalie, and I loved it. I was a good goalie too, carrying quite a few games. However, I have always been bored to sleep by spectating sports, hockey included. I couldn't give two shits about other people playing it. In fact, I'd have a hard time giving one shit, let alone two. As a kid, I hated it when the Olympics were on, because everyone would be sitting in front of the TV, yelling at men in skintight bodysuits that couldn't possibly hear them.

My uncle was a chemical engineer, really enjoys classical music and reading, so I guess he's a "nerd." He also really likes football and golf. He also was a skier his whole life and plays golf now.

I'm kind of a nerd, I guess. I'm not nerd smart, but I'm listening to a podcast on the history of Rome and am on this website so I guess that's close enough. I don't have much interest in most sports. But in real life I enjoy playing (casually :p) games based on Basketball (like Flush, Horse, Lightning, 7-on-the-line and other names that may not mean anything to you) but not actual Basketball; I also like volley ball quite a lot; I'm an intermediate snowboarder, but it's hard to get good when you're often times fat (I like carbs too much) and it's a very expensive hobby so I can't go very much and quite a few seasons I haven't gone at all. As for watching sports, I can't get enough of watching semi-pro/professional skateboarding (more the events, not so much the skate tapes with the stupid fish eye lens and obnoxious filters on everything). I greatly prefer street skating over vert. Snowboard cross at the last winter Olympics was amazing--real life SSX for the win!

It's almost as if labels don't matter.

As a Canadian nerd, I've played hockey since I was 7, worked for 8 years as a hockey timekeeper, and watch nearly every game for my home professional team (GO SENS GO!!, boo lockout! >_<)

So... nope I hate sports... lol.

Also watched Canadian Football for a few years until Ottawa lost their team, then I lost interest.

I like mainsteam sports-footbal(soccer to the yanks) and rughy. Proffesional games are good, if the skill is there, meaning it is really interesting to watch really good players play. And if you are engaged in a game (i.e it's your team) it can be very emotional.

I think that is a very sweeping generalization. Considering I qualify as a nerd but also played 2 years of varsity baseball in college...yea. Nerds can like whatever they want to like, it just so happens that a lot of nerds like watching LoL tournaments than football(either one) games.

I hate watching men throw/kick shit around. And by the way most people view women's sports, I'm glad I never got into playing any of them. I hate sports.

I used to play WR for our college team, 80% of us were cyberneticians, with a few scientists and programmers thrown in for good measure. Go figure.

My nerd cred is near-unimpeachable, but I could just as easily have grown up mundane and had the exact same feelings about watching sports.
That's because sports weren't a big part of family life when I was growing up. Ergo I never glommed onto them in a big way. When I was a teenager the traditional favorite national sports team of our region won the national championship, and I got caught up in the excitement. Some time after it was over I had one of those epiphany moments and realized how silly it was to be identifying so strongly with a bunch of men whose accomplishments are in no way affiliated with me, and had no trouble walking away from it.

These days, I can probably count on one hand the number of times I've gotten a memorable amount of pleasure out of watching a sport. Professional sports seem vaguely ridiculous to me but I don't make a big deal out of it, because that would lead to the sort of unpleasant behavior I associate with people who have strong, vocal opinions about religion.

I am a total geek or nerd or whatever you want to call it, I did very well in school, I watched anime, I played video game, Magic the Gathering, was shy, read a lot, loved sci-fi, basically all the cliches.

BUT I was not a small guy, a little over 6', and I really liked basketball. I played a couple years on my high school team. I also watch football.

In fact there is a whole subset of "nerd" who is super into sport's stats and plays fantasy leagues.

So like so much else in life it just comes down to personal preference.

I'm pondering this question as I listen to my oldest brother clearly enjoying (American) football, a sport which I am bored to tears by 99% of the time.
I never walked into school or work and said "Hey guys, how bout them Giants?". Growing up in a rural town, pretty much all anyone talked about was sports, so I was usually quiet and off in my own world for these talks.

But that's not to say I don't like sports. I prefer rugby to football, hockey to baseball, and MMA to basketball. When the World Championships for judo comes on, I watch with rapt attention.

So what do you guys think? Do us "nerds" not like sports, or do we just like different ones?
Funnily enough, you touched on something that's not often considered.

Sport nerds. Those who love certain sports, but don't actually participate. I know people who are as well versed in plays, player stats and team co-ordination that he can pretty accurately predict the outcome of major leagues before they even start.

The people who sit down and learn the ins and outs of championship manager or learn about all the parts of a race car without physically driving one.

Nerds are just people who are extremely specialised and devoted to a specific topic to the point of abnormality (not a bad thing, just not typical). So yeah, Nerds can like sports too and in fact, a specific sport could be their nerdy fixation.

I for one have a passing interest in rugby and golf, played them both at one point but drifted away from them when the competition diminished my enjoyment (pressure to perform weighed on the fun of just playing). I want to get back into Golf, but rugby is off my list of physical activity because I've become a pudgy softy who limits physical contact to hugs and handshakes instead of full blown tackles.

As Yahtzee would say: People who love sports are nerds too.

I like football, basketball, and just about every rallying sport (volleyball, ping pong, badminton etc.) I'm also 6'9" and having height is a bit of an advantage in those games. I don't see why we can't spend our days playing video games and sports equally.

...And if the Lions would quit gaffing every offensive series, they might actually be a playoff contender. I guess a guy can dream...

My girlfriend and I are decently big sports fans. I follow a few teams in the on season and so does she. It's pretty normal around here too. I know a bunch of football and rugby fans. Some of the biggest nerds around here love sports
