When Sony announced the new ps3s coming out I asked myself do you really need a 320gb harddrive. Now I have a 120gb one and it's not even close to being halfway full, my friends have the older ps3s with even less memory and I hear no complaints. So could I have your opinions please because I could be way off!

I've upgraded mine from a 40 GB to a 320 GB (because it was a cheap hard drive), but a 120 GB would easily have served my current storage needs. And I couldn't think of any use for space beyond the 250 GB model already available now.

Some people use their PS3 as a media player and are too lazy or unwilling to delete certain files on it. So I guess for them-along with the people who download a lot of material-it's worth it.
you make a good point

Am I the only person who thinks they are doing that as a dig? Hey I just bout a ps3 360, ummm wait what? lol

I am guessing some people like to download lots of stuff! But it is easy enough to swap out and copy ps3 hard drives I never saw the hard drives that come with them as a problem.

I dont think anyone needs 360 gigs of Harddrive space on their PS3, but with the ability to swap a new harddrive easily enough, and I remember seeing a 500gig hardrive for less than $100, I dont see a reason to buy a 360 gig harddrive, since im going to assume that they will charge even more for it.

Also, unrelated to the question, but because we are talking about PS3s. I have two PS3, both are slims and both have 120 gig HD. One is new and costs $299, the other is used (Refurbished) and costs $259. Im going to buy one of these, which should I buy? The new one? or the used one, giving me some extra money to spend on games?

I love my 60GB and it still has a large percentage of space available, though I tend to not use the system as a digital media console.

Well not really, you can upgrade the hard-drive yourself and I think most people won't really need that much storage space.
I upgraded my hard-drive to 250gb and that's rapidly running out. Mind you it is storing seasons of Dexter, Futurama and American Dad but it's still gonna take me a while to eat up that last 70gb.

I don't use up all that space, but I did max out my 20gig HDD on my 360. Mostly with DLC, which takes up a lot of space if you have stuff like Shivering Isles and The Pitt.

But I probably won't be using that much space. I reckon all the consoles are just getting ready to push more and more digital content, and move away from disc based playing. It suits their interests, but they can't do it with rinky dink HDDs.

Sony has been particularly forceful in this area, with the PSP Go not even having a place for discs. If you have the Go, you can store games on your PS3 so you don't have to download them over and over again. That might be part of it. I know I have about 20 gigs of PSP games on my PS3, which is only like 6 games.

I already have a 320GB PS3 after upgrading my 60GB one myself and it was definately worth it!

It means I don't need to worry about the amount of games, music and pictures on it!

I have plenty of video files and music stored on my PS3, as well as downloadable stuff and game installs. I'm slowly running out so gigs, so more space is probably better. Although I'll probably end up buying a cheap hard drive at some point and installing it myself, this new ps3 is good for people who don't want to do that/don't know how.

Yes, you can never have enough free space on your hard drive. I have a 120GB for my Xbox and I still have over 80GB of free space.

PS3 takes a standard hard disk from a PC (or is it a laptop one?)
2.5" HDD.. which is to say, a laptop HDD... and strangely enough, the same kind as almost every external HDD. So unless there was a hard limit set by the PS3's operating system, you could probably rip a 1Tb 2.5" drive out of an external enclosure, slot that in, and feeling vastly to the people blowing wads of cash on the whole 360Gb system.

You can also do something somewhat similar with Xbox 360s... except that it totally bones any warranty and it's a bit more complicated than doing it for a PS3 because of some lovely proprietary firmware in the 360. Also possible there's an operating system limit on HD sizes the 360 will accept... I'd have to look it up again.

Agreed, I did exactly the same and it just gives peace of mind as I recall on my 60gb drive, I was forever hoping the next few games didn't have excessively large install requirements. Then I gave up as it hit 8 to 10gb remaining and thus upgraded asap with a drive from play.com.

I think anything over 500gb is overkill really but in the meantime around the 300gb gives peace of mind to the user more than anything, there's no need to check the amount of space remaining as you're bound to have bags of room left over for anything up and coming over the horizon
