Do we really need a 320GB PS3?

So wait, these can still use external 3rd party drives, yes? If so, than I can't imagine needing to pay through the nose for all that extra space up front, when I see drives popping up on slickdeals once in a while that are 2tb and under $99. I wish MS would allow that, but they're shortsighted and greedy when it comes to their SKU builds. I'm still using an old core, I've more than amply filled the drive, but can use a memory stick or two, far cheaper than a MS HDD. Pathetically overpriced, those things.
Yes, it can still use 3rd party drives, they have to be SATA however, and fit 2.5" bays (laptop drives).

320g 2.5" WD Scorpio is down to $80 on Newegg.
1TB for $140 (There are no 2TB 2.5" drives on the market yet)

So, it really makes sense to simply buy the 160g, and upgrade from there.
Only reason to buy the 320GB one is if the rumoured $350 160GB Move bundle doesn't come about and you're interested in Move. Then you might as well get the 320GB one with Move and pay the same as you would for the 160GB with it, and 320GB will last you longer so by the time you need to upgrade there'll be 2TB hard laptop drives.

True dat, I already have an Eye though, so I simply need to scrape together the funds for 2 Move Controllers, and a Navigator. For early adopters of Move/New buyers of PS3's however, yeah your suggestion would definitely make more sense.
You actually don't need the navigator, you can use your DualShock 3 in one hand instead, and get a Navigator if you feel you're really using it.

I already have a 320GB PS3 after upgrading my 60GB one myself and it was definately worth it!

It means I don't need to worry about the amount of games, music and pictures on it!
Wow, same here, except I'm sort of running out of room. I need to get rid of some videos and uninstall some games, since two years' worth of mandatory and optional installs can really pile up.

Then again, upgrading to 1TB sounds pretty appealing... What a time to be alive!

I would enjoy it if they started releasing ps2 games and ps3 games on demand on Playstation store. then you need the disk space
Yep, and only then would you need that much space.

I had a 60gb PS3 for nearly 4 years, and me and this dude bought countless games on our shared profile, and even when my PS3 died, I had over 10GB HDD space left.

I've upgraded mine from a 40 GB to a 320 GB (because it was a cheap hard drive), but a 120 GB would easily have served my current storage needs. And I couldn't think of any use for space beyond the 250 GB model already available now.
Same but mine was 60gb

I know I have about 20 gigs of PSP games on my PS3, which is only like 6 games.
O.O
What games do you have?
Most PSP games seem to range from 500Mb - 1.5 Gb.

OP: It would help with me being able to put Record of Argarest War on my PS3. Damn publisher said: "no disk on North American PS3". No Disk! It's f'in 9Gb! I only have an 80 Gb and that more than 1/10 of my TOTAL space. Though I want that game, I still have not purchased due to this.

I constantly delete Game Data (not save data) and am still slowly running out of space. I've got 25 Gb left ATM. Sounds like a lot... until you realize that some installs can be up to 5Gb.
Old PS1 games. Specifically, RPGs. I was a little shocked myself, but I should have guessed, if it came on 4 discs, it was probably pretty sizeable. I had to buy a new memory stick for my PS3 to even fit them.

I had the default memory stick that came with my PSP, 2Gbs I think.

I'm contemplating putting my old laptops 250Gb hard drive in my PS3, I think it's really cool that you can do that and don't have to rely on the company to release a bigger hard drive.

You have to remember the ps3 can also store music videos and pictures. For the people using it as their go-to multi-media interface the 360 gig unit could be great news. It will boil down to individual need/ desire. I have an 80 gig one myself and am planning to upgrade soon to make space for the new games and music I'll be adding.
I hear ya :)

I'd get the 320 if I could afford it, I have quite a few movies and stuff on my PS3 and I use it for media and games, so the HDD gets eaten up :)

My laptop only holds 200GB, and despite all the music, videos, games, personal projects (mainly writing projects), and general accumulated rubbish that's on here, it's only now starting to get below 10GB free. An that's after I've had the laptop for about two years.

Thus, for a game console that won't hold anywhere near as much data and information as my laptop does, 320GB seems a bit excessive. The only thing it'll be really useful for is HD 3D gaming, or whatever comes along next at least...

You can download a lot of games from the PSN, a lot of full games. So far I have Socom (even though I have the disc) and I plan to get more, it's really convenient to just flip through games like my PSPGo, and I support DD for games. It also lets you store all your music and tons of videos on your PS3. just boot that baby up and have fun gaming, listening to music or watching movies.

Haha, of course not! But it's expansion, it happens everywhere. Urban development, for example. More and more cities are being built, and they grow fast. It's human! We want more. That's why anyone would 'need' so much memory. I myself am in love with my PS3.

Also, do we even need a PS3 in the first place?

Why didn't they make it a 360gig drive? That way people could say they bought a PS3 360 version, and all sorts of tomfoolery and confusion would explode on the internet.
