Yes, I put a good amount of effort into most of my posts, except for the occasional lazy ones, but in general I'm just 1 person in a giant sea of others, and let's be honest, most people are lazy on top of that.
Easiest way to get noticed is to post something short, simple and to the point in a completely black and white manner which also happens to be highly controversial. I don't tend to do that very often, not to mention I have trouble taking things in simple black and white terms anyway. Any form of neutrality tends to be completely ignored and viewed as somehow "wishy washy."
Of course, as the topic says. Nobody is going to read this anyway so I may as well be talking to myself.

I feel like my existence is insignificant. I'd probably ended up commiting suicide by now if 'i didn't think it wasfor weak minded pussies.
And ya, sometimes when I write a long thought out opinion to a thread and no one answers, it adds a little to my overall general feeling of insignificance.

They all count towards the post count on your profile anyway, and something that happens in forums of course is that the ones with the large figures of posts are the ones who are trusted the most! (Not always I know, but it can lead to an increase in credibility!)
If I have a point I never think that it is insignificant, as long as I think it is valid! I know that not everyone is going to read it, but it may get the few looks that are needed. A certain person may read it who thinks 'hey yeah, s/he's right' and then quotes me, and then quids-in i'm being noticed all over again!

Anyway, you (as in, the general 'you') may think your posts on a forum are insignificant because nobody directly responds to them, which would lead you to think they're not being read. This might also be true, especially for zero-content threads ("post your top ten games!" = 1,000 people posting a list of ten games, no-one reads anyone else's list, but wants the world to know their own) but remember, a good deal of browsers/users/lurkers/readers of The Escapist are in the gaming industry themselves. The Escapist is a gaming hub, just like other gaming sites, and various games designers and such are as much a part of them as your average gnerk* who spends his entire life online belittling other peoples' efforts. It's not like Hollywood, as many designers are just working Joes who love games. Whilst Tom Cruise might never have set foot on the imdb forums, or Peter Molyneux trawl through $gaming_site's forum, there's a good chance that Bob the unit manager for Vanilla Sky did, or Sarah the Games Mechanics Designer for Fallout: New Vegas is browsing right now. These people, the ones who make the industry tick, reads these threads (not necessarily *this* one) and your opinion has the power to influence these kinds of people, which helps to create future products that do not have the flaws you see as important enough to post in a forum about.
They're just a bunch of guys with opinions, and when someone says "ugh, there are too many dragons in GenericRPG", there's a good chance that someone related to the creation of the game will read this comment, come to an informed decision, and ensure that, on balance, the next game (or next patch) will have fewer dragons, and more of whatever else someone suggested they like.
Such as dragons.
In a nutshell, people who change the direction of the industry read forums. Sometimes they're paid to. They are just normal people (on the whole), and if your posts are content-worthy, and you have something productive to say... and you're generally grammatically correct... then maybe your post will help influence these people and alter the future of gaming.

I do if it's in one of those "list your favourite ___!" threads because I don't think anyone actually reads other people's replies in those. I do, however, put a lot of effort into "recommend me ___" replies because, usually, everyone's just throwing out titles without explaining anything beyond "it gud lol".
Beyond that though, in real discussion threads, I think my replies are going to be read, and I can tell they often are because people reply to them as often as not.

I generally go through phases where I'm more cheerful and my arguments with people are more like debates (which is a good thing), and then there are times when when I need people to know that they're wrong. I tend not to enjoy that time as much. Right about now I'm on the cheerful wave of posting.
I think that accurately describes me. Though I don't find that such a bad thing. I go on threads like this to vent generally, and I'm sure a lot of other people do as well. Finding the occasional person you relate to is pretty rewarding, but it's not why I use the forums.Grey Carter said:

Politics/religion/philosophy bores me immensely, so I either stick to the light hearted topics, or maybe add in a little to the more sciency orientated topics.
To be honest I just don't do forum debates because:
A) I'm not very good at staying on topic. Mostly because I'm easily bored.
B) I have very little patience for the kind of bullshitty strawman/non-squitor/provably false arguements that are so common on the internet among the so called "above average" pseudo-intelectuals.
C) I would much rather be doing something at least somewhat productive with my time. Even if it is just reading a book or something like that.
