I don't hate anything because its popular but if something I hate is popular then I will hate it even more.

No, hating the object of the popularity is pointless. It was created in an attempt to GAIN popularity, so one could only give grudging respect for its success.

Instead, when something really bad, dumb, stupid, or flawed becomes popular... I hate PEOPLE. It's the ignorant masses who are to blame for the un-deserved popularity of things that really suck.

Pretty much this. Not sure why, but the more praise I see given to something - even if I've played/watched/read and loved it myself - the more I want to criticise it. Maybe I'm just argumentative.

However, I have read most of 50 Shades and Twilight and I can confirm both are genuinely bad. The description of eating out in 50 Shades is hilarious.

Ten thousand times this.

For example, I dislike FFVII on it's own merits. I hate the fanbase with a passion and I hate the hype and the bull the fans spew, but I legitimately own the game and dislike it as a game on it's own. I don't hate it BECAUSE it's popular, but disliking it makes me hates the popularity itself, because I don't see any redeeming qualities about it, and I'm sick of fans deciding I can't have played it, when I have, and it took an obsessive fanboy of a friend threatening me at knifepoint to get me to finish!

EDIT: To be fair, though, I typically like niche things a lot more and typically avoid the mainstream just because I don't like the things other people like anymore. So I'm sort of a hipster of sorts. If that makes sense?

Oh, so you don't hate Hitler? You support Hitler? HEY, EVERYBODY, THIS GUY'S A NAZI! YEAH, THAT'S RIGHT--A NAZI! A BIG, FAT NAZI! What about cancer? You don't hate cancer? You like cancer? HEY, EVERYBODY, THIS HITLER LOVER LIKES CANCER AND HOPES YOU ALL DIE FROM IT!

But seriously, I agree. Hate's too strong a word for these things (except for cancer & Hitler). I wouldn't say I dislike anything because it's popular. I think that's bad practice for human beings. If I ever find that I dislike something based on nothing else other than that it's popular, I force myself to check it out. Sometimes I go in and away thinking it's stupid, but sometimes I become a fan. Popular things are popular for a reason, after all.

Not really...I tend to not hate stuff at all. It usually eats too much energy to actively hate something or someone. (EDIT: oh, and it's also not very fruitful, in general.)

My process is usually something along the lines of "Do I like it?" if yes, keep going. If no, keep going just a little bit farther for a while. It might get better. Unless it's the second time I ask myself that question and it's still a "no". Then I usually abandon it until it's either being mentioned by someone whose judgement I trust or I (randomly) get the urge to try it once more. It's all very personal and mostly based on just my own opinion; yes, I'm that egotistical/self-centered. :p

I hate the popularity of the thing, not the thing that's popular. I even like things that I'll hate are wildly popular. I like playing Call of Duty with some friends, but I still know it doesn't deserve all the goddamn praise it gets.

Hating something for its popularity... that's a bit childish.
It is also super funny how many people bash the Twilight books or 50 Shades without having spend some quality time with good reading material themselves.

I'm reminded of that Chris Rock comedy Head of State where a common guy gets chosen to run for president. Being a comedy, the candidates run ads like this:

Also, I'm surprised people don't do this in real life. It's ridiculous....but sadly it would probably work

A lot of the things I dislike tend to be popular. But it's not that I feel like I won't be unique if I like something that's popular. Whether or not I like something is based on its own merits. However, with things I dislike or have no interest in, their popularity can be annoying. The more people don't shut up about it, the more convinced I become that it was designed to appeal to the lowest common denominator, and then I become more hostile towards it.

Here are some popular things I don't like:
Call of Duty (and other military shooters)
Mario
Diablo 3
Breaking Bad

Here are some popular things that I like:
My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic
Pokémon
Legend of Zelda

And here are some things that I like that the internet hates with a fiery passion:
Dragon Age 2
Mass Effect 3
Star Wars: The Old Republic

If anyone constantly expresses their hate about something that isn't physically/visually affecting them, the hate is unwarranted.

I know I dislike rap - however I'm almost never actually *reminded* of my hate for it, and so I've more or less forgotten about that hateful feeling.
The last time I was genuinely FORCED to listen to rap (i.e. I couldn't simply get away from the source) was so long ago I don't even remember.

So people who hate Twilight or Beiber, are those things being forced onto you in any way? If yes (e.g. your partners/siblings won't shut up about it or refuse to turn down the stereo) then your hate is totally understandable.
If no, then your hate is absolutely pointless and expressing it is pointless.

It's basically when people go to certain videos of something SOLELY to express their hate about it, when they themselves are the ones who decided to go to that video in the first place. How immature and silly.

I hate things that are popular, and I hate how popular some things are, but I don't hate things because they are popular.

Like I hate Twilight, 50 Shades, Justin Bieber etc, and it annoys me how popular they are (especially 50 Shades, that thing doesn't deserve to exist) but I hate them because they're terrible (in my opinion)

I make a point to not hate things I haven't read/watched/listened to. Once you know it sucks feel free to hate it, but don't complain about something you haven't experienced.

I don't hate anything just because it's popular. I pride myself in my ability to find the good in most things and to not stamp things as "good" or "bad" since few things can be so easily labeled like that. /pretentious

Some people do hate things because they're popular, though, even if they think they don't. And I will explain that.

Usually it's when something they like is in direct competition with something else, and the latter is much more popular than the former. For example: Final Fantasy XI and WoW. I'm going with that because I used to be a crazy FFXI fan just like the rest of that insane fanbase. (And I still have fond memories.) Actually this is the case with pretty much every MMO, but anyway.

People hate on the more popular one because they feel that its popularity is hurtful to their preferred game and, by extension, to them personally. They then proceed to say that it's just a bad game and that people who like it are stupid blind sheep.

It's dumb and childish and people should really knock it off.

I hate 50 Shades of Gray because it is popular and crap. It angers me how something like that can make millions.
