Do you like Hip Hop?

I'm curious as to how many people on the Escapist have a favorable opinion of hip hop. Often when people discuss music on the website, I see that many people put they like just metal, or most music that isn't hip hop and country. Personally, I enjoy real hip hop a great deal. Artists like Common, Nas, and other artists with soulful and meaningful music often can pique my interest.

So, what is your opinion of it?

I love hip-hop. Five deez, Substantial, Pase, Nujabes. Those are more underground but it's still fantastic.

Yes - Kid Koala, Wax Tailor, 2manyDJs, edIT, J5, and the roots are among my favorite. I love Pandora for opening me up to several artists I would have never come across on my own.

Yes, I love Hip-Hop. When you find a good artist who knows how to write good lyrics, it is by far the best genre, in my opinion.

I used to think that what I like was alternative hip-hop, but the lines blur between alternative hip-hip and the most interesting elctro. So.... maybe?

Long answer: Well, I don't like what I would call 'Hip-Hop' but I like UK Grime music.

A fair amount of Gorillaz songs is Hip-Hop, you've probably never heard of that one.
Hip-Hop is generally a blunt no for me but as I said, occasionally I find one of my liking.

I puke at the oh-so popular gangsta rap and the R&B/hip-hop mix-up (the Kanye Wests and Akons of this world) crap makes me puke as well.

However, I'm an utter fanboy of this kind of hip-hop:
Fantastic music to put on after a tough day, perfect to unwind, slow down and relaaaax. And the anime that's it from is awesome to boot, and I too don't generally watch anime! Go figure!

Aww yeah. Hip-hop is FINE. Old-skool, jazzy,Trip-hop,Hip-hop. It's become my favorite genre. I've been looking for more artists like Nujabes. Someone who is mostly a beat-bed maker incorporating jazz and experimental music.
(Some Gorillaz just cuz.)

To be honest, I can't stand hip hop, mainly due to the people I see preforming it and the peole I see listening to it. Its, in my opinion, a crappy genre of music.

Having said that, The Gorillaz are one of my favourite bands, and hip hop. But alot of their songs don't feel like conventional hip hop. So yeah, I'll stick to my rock xD

I saw your post Zenoaugustus and as a rabid hip-hop fan i had to contribute. Mr Deverfro's opinion is one shared by many who weren't exposed to the best examples of what the genre has to offer. The thrash that you hear on the radio is NOT indicative of the scene.
Common, The Roots, Kanye West (yes MR West IS a Genius any real hip-hop fan will attest),
MF DOOM (the GREATEST), J Dilla (far to underrated to this day), Nujabes (also quite underrated RIP to his Genius) KRS-ONe the list goes on and on...

Not really, no. Furthermore, some of the artists I dislike the most are rappers. I keep an open mind towards exceptions though, I dig the occasional Eminem song and there are a couple of Swedish rappers I tend to enjoy.

I know that I don't belong in this converstaion, but I hate Hip Hop. I lover Country and Classic Rock and Classical, but I hate Hip Hop. I hate it because when I was in Middle School I had force down my throat, because the bus driver would let them play it all the time. From then I have hated it all. I know this might not have been the answer you were looking for but that is how I feel.

May i also say that while i am an huge Gorillaz fan..They are NOT hip-hop...the have collaborated with hip-hop artists.. (Check out November has come feat. MF DOOM..it'll change your friggin life) they only had Del the Funkee Homosapien as Russel for like two songs..

Gorillaz = Trip-Hop not Hiphop

Yeah, some of it. I like '80s and '90s hip hop more than current mainstream stuff, which seems indistinguishable from pop music anyway. I know there are great underground artists out there, though, but being in Australia, most of the underground hip hop I get access to is either from here or New Zealand.

But yeah, '80s and early 90s hip hop is great. And for more exploratory trip-hop stuff, Massive Attack is one of my favourite groups of all time. Some of their stuff maybe isn't hip hop, but Unfinished Sympathy and other songs of that flavor totally are.
