...well, do you? I'm just curious to see if any of you guys are musically minded, like me. I play electric bass (Epiphone Thunderbird, probably the greatest thing I've ever owned), and tend to play covers of things like RATM, Muse, The Living End, Sublime... all sorts really. So, do you play an instrument and if so what do you like to play?

EDIT: Here's a link to my most recent Youtube upload, forgot to add it before: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lJOO4CfSAf4

if you play bass try listening to stanley clarke and primus, learn how awesome a bass can sound. stanley is probly considered better due to the time played compared to les but both are arguably the best bass players alive.

as for me i've played several over the years

baritone, tuba, trumpet
clarinet and sax
a bit of guitar

i wouldn't mind taking up bass tho

I own a Spanish guitar and a Fender Strat, and I've been playing for several years.

Also I can play the harmonica (but who can't, really) and I know how to get sound out of a recorder. Oh, and I have a bagpipe I can play theoretically but haven't really touched since I picked up smoking a lot.

Cleverly, you really can't count baritone and tuba as two different instruments as they're basically the same.

You know, I really admire Les Claypool but I just can't get into Primus. God knows I've tried. Just checked out Stanley Clarke just now, and by God that guy's good! I also recommend checking out Victor Wooten if you like bass.

stanley and les both play the same bass, les can play a spot on version of silly putty, so close a big stanley clarke fan couldn't tell the difference. primus too me a couple good listen to's to really like, then something clicked and i love them, i think it was after i saw them live. primus live == way more energy than on the album. i do know who victor is and he is very good. i got to see stanley clarke, al di meola and jean-luc ponty play together a few years ago, too bad there was a bunch of jazz snobs looking at me oddly for wearing a skinny puppy shirt there

actually here's 2 clips of him from the show i was at, i wasn't too far from them i don't think

when i saw delerium/conjure one live, i was talking to the bass player and she said her hand was cramped, told her to play some stanley clarke and she laughed said she had met him and couldn't even imagine playing his stuff, we spent a while talking about jazz, much to the disappointment of the fan boys there

I play E-Guitar because I think that acoustic ones don't sound good and it's impossible to play anything cool because after the twelth fret it gets kinda hard to play (as a standard E-Guitar can reach 20-24 frets, high end shredder ones even 29)

I actually despise the E-Bass (sorry, nothing personal) it isn't flexible and I never miss it when it isn't in a song because I actually can't ever hear the damn thing (and yes, my speakers do have a bass)
What do you mean by flexible? You can make a hell of a lot of different sounds using a Bass, and if you've got a five or 6th string you've got a range that's nearly the same as an electric guitar. I go the other way and really don't like it when songs don't have any bass behind them. The White Stripes in particular annoy me for this- songs end up lacking depth when there's no bass to complement the other instruments.

It's also one of the most essential instruments (whether electric or stand-up) for bands to have so nehhhhh :p

EDIT: And that's nonsense about not being able to play anything cool on an acoustic guitar. Listen to this, the first random thing I found on youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JsD6uEZsIsU

Yeah i wish i learnt piano first. But as it goes I play guitar and a bit of piano. I don't agree with the whole "i play acoustic, electric, bass" they're all the same thing! They're interchangeable, for me atleast.

That's that acoustic statement taken care of.

2) The Electric Bass is a very flexible instrument, and has the most important role in the band, along with drums. It's what sets the rhythm and groove, and gives the sound it's depth. The guitar, as much as I love it, is an extra instrument that adds extra decorative sound on top.

Oh, and go and check out right now Cliff Burton, Stanley Clarke, Les Claypool, Billy Sheehan and Flea. Right now.

Silly philistines, making sweeping generalizations like that...
yeah all the greats play acoustic guitar, that takes a lot of skill to play, listne to al di meola play the acoustic

and if he wants to check out stanley, he can hear both him and al play amazing stuff together :)
