I always wear one, I like the added bonus of having it, both for realism's sake and for the extra little defence... Also I think it makes my Character look better

Meh, for the most part I wouldn't bother as it feels weird to have a helmet glued on when he wouldn't need it, like walking around town. Also not in any game like Dragon Age which has a lot of face zoom in time since the faces tend to be more detailed than the helmet textures. always wear cool hats when I can, however.

For oblivion, if im going into a large battle of some sort, of course im wearing my helmet. but other wise i usually put on a hood of some sort, to make my character look mysterious, you know like the rangers from Lord of the Rings

I am a mysterious character myself. Hoods I love, but if I am required to be more militaristic then ill gladly put a helm for the sake of fitting with the atmosphere, proudly wearing a uniform of who I serve or serves me and do not want to display emotions to anyone unless I feel I ought to.

For me, it really depends on what it looks like. I usually always have a helmet, hood, etc. on my characters head. Even if the ugly helmet has better stats, I'd rather have the awesome looking hood or cap with lesser stats. Purely an aesthetic choice for me. Unless of course I absolutely need to wear that piece of armor for a quest-chain, mission, or what-have-you; but I'll take it off right after and put on something far better to look at.

I was going to make that Mount and Blade: Warband point. Archers are the bane of my existence. I ALWAYS wear some form of headgear, because those damn archers are crack shots for headshots on me. On my main character, right now I'm rocking the Kettle Helm, because I won't go without a helmet, but at the very least I want to look different from the other lords and preferably see my character's handsomeish face, considering I'm the most dashing man in calradia.
Funnily enough, the Kettle Helm was the only one I was considering wearing, of all the helms. I equip my Storm Guard with the best winged great-helms I can get, but I won't wear them myself >.>

The only time i'll put a helmet on a character is if I gave up on the character creation and my character looks terrible without something covering his/her face.

Can't think of any game where a helmet has made that much of a difference protection wise.

I will in Dark Souls, because

a) My carefully crafted character spends about 99% of the game looking like a zombie and,
b) I will take any damn advantage I will get!

Also, they have done an awesome job of armour design in the game. So I really don't mind too much.

Otherwise, I have never found a game so difficult that 2% extra armour or whatever makes the difference between victory and death. I liked ME1's option, where you could take the helmet off manually between battles, a minor feature like sadly too many others that were dropped in the sequel.

Even though they may give protection,I usually decide to leave the helm off unless the full set looks badass.

Otherwise,I tend to keep the helmet off if there is no option of disabling it visually.

Does the helmet have numbers? I like numbers. If the helmet gives me better numbers than without the helmet, I'll get the helmet.
However, if it's not much of a difference I'll go for the better looking one.
More games should have an option to hide the helmets.

Have you considered applying for Valve, specifically on the Team Fortress dev team? You seem to have potential on that venue!

OT: It entirely depends on the headgear in question. If it looks cool and goes well with the rest of my character's outfit, I'll wear it. I do however prefer headwear that doesn't cover the face, if the entire face is covered it can sometimes dampen the feeling of personality for me.

If there are extra stats on the helmet of course I would wear it. I'm not going to sacrifice my character's abilities for the sake of some strange projection of vanity.

I tend to use helmets as a substitute for a shield. Let's say a character of mine wields, say, a broadsword and shield - this set-up would use no helmet. However if my character was proficient with two-handed weapons, and used a claymore, then they would wear a helm to make up for the lack of a shield.

My spellsword/battlemage characters are the exception to this rule, who use neither shield or helm due to being able to cast Shield spells.

Meh. Starting off, every bit of armor and stat boost is a boon. Only later on will I weigh helmet choice on aesthetics. And even if I spend an hour or more carefully sculpting a potato into a work of art, I've just spent an hour staring at it. And if I ever get the uncontrollable urge to peep at his/her face, I just unequip the helm and look... easy.

As the op mentioned, seeing a formation of troops in full helms with only important characters baring their heads is just so... I mean, I understand they're important and all, but... really, it's just silly and hurts atmosphere.

Here's a lineup of guardsmen, find the one that can help you track down the serial killer:

See? I rest my case.

Disregarding the protection they give, i like helmets and masks. Almost always wear them. It's a customizable artificial face.
That reminds me, i gotta find a less annoying helmet than fin gleam, green obscure piece of crap

No helmets, ever. Unless they provide a very specific and necessary benefit (Oblivion had one that gave you night-vision), I just don't like them.
