Mostly by avatar but I change my avatar often since I can make them myself so it makes it hard for people to recognize me at times. I usually don't remember a users name unless they have a funny or strange one, are users I see often or are on my friends list.

By avatar first... if I know a person well enough, avatar theme.

I change my avatar quite often, though. I expect people who want to know me will notice my name anyway.

Avatar mostly, though I know a few escapists by username. It makes me quite annoyed how many people can't be arsed to think of their own avatar and just copy Yatzee's avatar. I've learnt just to complete ignore posts by those people.

I tend to go by avatar, as it allows me to recognize people from a glance. I'm also relatively new here, so I haven't learned the names of very many people.

Generally I go by avatar but there are some people I remember by name.

I think more people probably recognise me by avatar than name too.

Both, unless it's someone who constantly changes their avatar, in which case name only.

I've conditioned myself to recognize by name, although I still will remember someone's avatar every now and then.

Avatar - I recognise names of certain people, but if they change their avatar I'm not going to know its them for a long old time.

It depends who it is. Sometimes name, but mostly avatar. For instance there's someone on these forums, whose name I do not know, with White Mage as their avatar.

I just see them cropping up a lot and start to recognise 'em.

It's definitely avatar for me. When I pressed the red button a while back I didn't have a clue what was going on in the forums.

I go by avatar, and i often wonder when i see the same avatar on a different forum if it is the same poster as here. Forum names are so impersonal, i don't honestly believe that people are the names they say they are and often remembering some arbitrary string of letters is more difficult than going by picture.
Although I personally photoshopped my own avatar, and am fairly attached to it, its Bill from L4D if he were a cat by the way, i know that other people often just throw up a random GIF and change it every so often, or just take the name and picture a a fictional character and use that, making them difficult to identify.
I guess sometimes you need both.

Name on people I know or see often. Avatar on others. There's too many ponies out there to see the difference on everyone's avatars...

Mostly avatars, but I use names well enough too.

"the root of all evil" changed his avatar from that kitty cereal table thingy. Now I don't see much of him. So avatars play quite an important role in seeing people.

Avatar is the one that sparks my intrest, then I usually look at the post and the name comes last, usually. But if I'm really interested in the thread then post>avatar>name.
