Do you recommend FFIX?

Of course I recommend it. It's by far the best FF game, along with FF VI. It's got all these great characters, Nobuo Uematsu himself said that the score he composed for FF IX is his favorite, the story is great, and I absolutely love Zidane and Vivi. Plus, it's the only game that's made me cry, like really cry, not just get small tears in my eyes. Melodies of Life is, without a doubt, the most emotional song I've ever heard.
If you liked VII then I think you will like VIII because they are both similar futuristic RPG whilst IX is much more of a traditional Final Fantasy. Even though IX is one of my favourite Final Fantasies ever and you'd probably like it but it's story and world is very different from VII.
Honesty, play Final Fantasy VI. I loved VII when I first played it, but overall, VI is simply better, imo.
Really? Because back in 2000-01, GameFAQs nearly exploded from all the 8 vs. 9 fanboy flame wars. At the time it was a flashpoint between people who liked the old-school look and gameplay style of 9 vs. the newer, grittier, angstier, whinier 8 (little did we on the 9 side of the flamewar realize how much worse it would get when 10 came out!)Onyx Oblivion said:

I personally would have to say no. I've gotten to play most, if not all of the FF series (I think I missed some GBA/DS/Wii versions) I can't say IX is a favorite. For the most part I didn't like the look. I know that's a bad excuse for some, but if you don't like what you see and you have to stare at it for XYZ hours it's a valid complaint. I got started, but never finished the game. It didn't draw me at any point. But alot more people like it than FF8's "love drama". I enjoyed 8's story and gameplay, but that's not much help for you. I say play them in order, burn through 8 then tackle 9. I promise you will love 10. As for FFXI it is an interesting MMORPG which I did enjoy more than than WoW (which everyone compares all MMO to). FFXII plays like an MMO which is kinda funny imho. Reminded me of that .HACK game. I was vastly disappointed with 13, such promise and yet felt like lite-rpg with heavy action elements. As for 14, *sigh*. It's a huge work in progress, they made it free while they fix things. It has promise and decent graphics, but it's missing something. Trying to be like WoW isn't a sure win.
in this ones personal opinion ff9 is the best final fantasy game ever made period so definitely yes you should.

Overall, if 7 was your very first, I'd say go with 9. 8's system is pretty complicated, although I enjoyed it well enough. I've actually been playing 9 again recently and I absolutely love the side-quests, especially "Chocobo Hot & Cold" game.
I will say though that while the first half of the story is great (it's especially touching when they get to the BM Village), the second half (towards the end of disc 3) pulls a REALLY stupid plot twist and puts Vivi, the more interesting and conflicted character, in the back. Then there's the final boss, who had no business being there and, honest to God, throws out a line from Star Wars. None of it is a complete deal-breaker, but I didn't enjoy the game near as much by then.
Again, 9 is simpler, pretty close to 7's system, so it's easier to get used to than 8. I'd definitely suggest trying the other previous FFs, especially 6.

Anyway, I couldn't get into IX, and I despise VIII, X and XII. XIII is just okay. For me all of the games up to and including VII are classic, with my favorites being IV, VI and VII (I really hope that IV ultimate edition reaches the US); but I believe the first three deserve an honorable mention with III being my favorite out of those three.
First off, let me state: Squall is not an emo but a military workaholic seriously look at some parts of the game. Quistis asks him to remember certain lines for protocols during certain parts of the game and he recites it to the bloody last line of the bloody paragraph and section. And how would you feel if you were the only child at an orphanage and your 'sister' happens to be taken away? Not to mention he has an odd time trusting people but learns to do so with Rinoa etc, fall in love etc.Glademaster said:

I'd get IX just for the side questing and card-mini game alone!! It is an awesome game! Its a lot more charming than XIII as well! And having characters with set classes worked better for me, you still have choice over the abilities, but I preferred my characters to have a particular job, not just a bunch of empty shells in which I could do what I want!!
Well on the Third point yes they are dark but not that dark. They are probably the darkest of the Final Fantasies at least up their but in the grand scale of things they aren't really that bad.Pyroguekenesis said:

Yes. Absolutely yes! It's my favourite game of all time. The setting is beautiful, the dialogue sharp and deep, the characters interesting, grounded and easy to sympathise with. The relationships, growth and development are just amazing to watch and be a part of. The music is by far the best in the series, the combat and levelling system is simple and thoroughly enjoyable and the whole atmosphere and aesthetic of the game is just fantastic in every way

I didn't really care for IX all that much. It's probably my least favorite Fantasy title. But most people seem to enjoy it, which makes me the odd man out - so I say go for it.

I played 9 back when I was 10, and it was my first of the series. Once it came onto the playstation network, I was in shock. For years I had wanted to experience it again, to see and do the things that began to shape my understanding of the world. Final Fantasy 9 is a game of growth and personal courage, sacrifice and death. The very concepts that make up the world itself are outlined in ways that made more sense to me than anything else. The plot is warm and endearing and the characters are all very human and easy to relate to. It is funny, difficult, and tragic. As a story, it is unparalled. Gaming as a medium, to me, tells a story the same way a book or film will tell a story. It is the best storytelling in a game I have ever seen or ever will see. I still remember being 10 years old and seeing that crystal when it was all over and I was at the opening credits again, embedded gently as if to strike the significance of everything into my mind. Those of you that have played to completion will understand this.
