In a recent forum thread, a lone idiot waged war against numerous people, making proposterous claims and being generally offensive in his discussion contributions. On a whim, I looked at his profile and then Googled his info. I was actually quite startled at just how much I discovered from his profile info alone!

Consequently, I've actually removed or altered any sort of biographical info from my profile.

Do you guys think that the amount of personal information available online is worrying, or am I being overly paranoid? Do any of you try to keep entirely anonymous?

Uhhhhh...

Yes and no. It is strange how much info you can find out about someone if you only knew their name. You could find my address and phone number, if you only googled my name (for the time, the info has changed since then). It's kind of scary at first, but then you realize, who the hell would really google YOU? You're not special. You're just some guy with, an average amount of cash. Nothing anyone would be interested in stealing or killing really.

I trust the internet.

I trust it to lie, cheat, steal and reveal far more information than one would initially think it would.

LONG LIVE THE INFORMATION SUPER-HIGHWAY!!!

I only fear my fellow man when he has authority over me. By the time that has happened I couldn't hide from him if I wanted to.

I trust the internet just as much as I'd trust any stranger I see on the street.

I don't put personal details like that on websites. Because its a stupid thing to do. I trust the internet, sure, but not the people using it.

I trust the internet insofar as I'll put up my name and email address basically anywhere. For one, there's really no way that bit of information will help anyone steal anything of mine, and for two, there's nothing worth taking in the first place.

If I google my name, there are tons and tons of other people with the same name who all have pages before I do. But I have never used my full name anywhere online except when I buy stuff from secure websites.

And quite frankly, I don't think there are too many people waiting to read what I have to say. I just don't make enemies like that.

lol trust the fucking internet.

If you do trust the internet go browse 4chan and try and "be yourself" for a couple of minutes. The internet is the most despicable place on the planet, with some spots of "alright".

Actually that's a troll attempt. Last I heard that isn't even true.

on topic: I don't really distrust the internet, it really depends on the sites I go to and I don't go anywhere shady so I generally don't worry about it. Plus even without giving out loads of personal info people will always be able to find you on the internet.

I guess it's really about not treading on anyone's toes or giving them reason to want to find you. Personally, I'm a bit disheartened that if you Google my name, it comes up with a load of forum posts from my embarassing 13 year old self. >.<
