It looks they couldn't be bothered to design the Dark Dimension so they just slapped out a planet from No Man's Sky.

Decent film though.

It was fine. It really just did everything it needed to. Biggest problem, they made it an origin story... and then rushed through the origin to get to the "action part" 3rd act. And that's really a fairly minor complaint... if you are doing an origin story, then do it. If you're going to skip the origin story... then skip it.

But otherwise, they hit all the high points. It looked great and it was just fun. They didn't make the mistake of confusing emo/dark with mature and wound up with another good movie.

I saw it... thought it was pretty good. And Tilda Swinton made a good master/mentor figure. A little playful, reserved ehen she needed to be, could play the part of a unflappable defender of humanity from mysticsl threats but not without utterly abandoning that sense of her humanity and frailties inherent.

As for the titular character I think it could have been a tad longer to develop his character more ... the slapstick with his cloak is hit and miss at best... and the idea that he thrashes all these experienced mystic warriors, including capturing the primary antagonist so early in a device that looks like a plastic toy body cage made by Mattel kind of takes the venom out of the threat.

But I liked it. Gorgeous cinematography, doesn't take itself too seriously, has decent humour to boot.

Just saw it today, I really liked it. I knew nothing of Dr Strange before going into it and now I want to know more. My biggest problem with it is it could have spent more time world building, I feel like the movie needed to be longer.

And I really liked how the boss fight went, I actually thought that was quite different and I liked it. More boss fights that don't just end in a punch out please.

I saw it a few nights ago. It was ok. Sadly, most reviewers are correct, in that it's a "style over substance" kind of movie. People kept saying "you go see this for the visuals" yeah well, that's not enough to keep me interested really. I was actually dozing off during the final sequences, simply because it was nothing but pretty lights and images, and very little story at all.

Would've preferred more movie in my movie, and less of a laser light show.

To be fair, Dr. Strange comics live up to the title. The crap he gets up to is WEIRD. I mean, one of his enemies is basically a multiversal cancer, his girlfriend cheated on him with Benjamin Franklin, and he's constantly traversing worlds that look like a REALLY GOOD acid trip. The world building can easily take up a movie in and of itself.

Heck, that ending is actually the NORM with how his fights go. Strange is easily the strongest Superhero in the Marvel Universe, but almost every single one of his rogues gallery could kick his ass in a straight up fight.

Ehhhhhh.

It's a Marvel movie.

I basically enjoyed it while watching it, it held my attention for the duration and for a bit there I was thinking it might be my favourite of the lot, but now when I think back on it all I can say is, "It was okay I guess."

The effects were fun. I found myself wishing the plot would calm the fuck down for a bit so we could see more whacky shit. Spend a bit of time showing us the surreal, trippy infinite universes stuff and a bit less fist-fighting in urban kaleidoscopes.

Christ Marvel have started sticking to their bloody formula though. What's that you say? A capable but arrogant man is brought low and must remake himself until he wins the respect of his disapproving love interest while fighting a dark version of himself? Gee, where have I heard that before?

Yeah, pretty much that. It was a mildly entertaining time waster, but overall it wasn't anything particularly special or amazing. Still worth a watch if you're after a couple of hours of mindless entertainment. Just don't go drunk. There's a few scenes that will make you feel sick if you're inebriated.

Oh, yeah, that's exactly like Captain America:Civil War!

No, because that wasn't an origin story.

It is an awful lot like Iron Man and Thor.

It's also pretty damn similar to Ant Man and Peter Quill's story in Guardians. Just need to swap out "arrogant" for "irresponsible".

Well, that's a fair bit narrower scope than I took it for.

Okay. Sure. I'm a bit sick of people claiming that all Marvel movies are the same, so maybe I jumped the gun a bit there, but I think your post could've been a lot clearer that they're using ONE OF the formulas they've used before.

"Irresponsible" is IMO too broad to draw too many parallels. Most flaws are basically tolerated until they make someone do something irresponsible. We care that Stark is arrogant and don't care that he's alcoholic because his arrogance caused Ultron and his alcoholism didn't.

I'm having trouble remembering Ant-Man (aside from the comedy bits). Wasn't "trying to be more responsible (for his son)" the start of his character arc, though?

I think Guardians is more of a team-coming-together story than a personal origin story. Starlord doesn't particularly dick around about not wanting to save the galaxy, he's the one talking the team into taking on the mission in the first place. It's more of the Avengers 1 formula, with less direct infighting (although there IS a little) and more betrayal (e.g. calling the antagonist and saying "we're heeeeere!").
