Does Amnesia need a sequel?

Amnesia was a success of a horror game for me because the situation it gave you was fairly realistic, in that it didn't give you weapons and only let you hide/run. I liked that.

Though I see why it could have little room for adjustment and creativity in a second title, unless some badass horror psychologist gets in on the scene.

My question:
Would a second Amnesia (where the protagonist classically has them some good ol' fashioned memory loss) be a good idea, where anything bad could be improved and new environments could appear or would a sequel ruin the respectability of it and it would be better for the game to stand alone as an example of horror genre.

Don't just post if you didn't like the game, that's not what this is about.

Nah, Amnesia's endings were all pretty definite (Okay except for the best ending) and I think that it would have to be an in name only sequel for it work. Amnesia is pretty much Penumbra 2 (Overture and Black Plague were considered one game right?) in gameplay style anyway.

You do have a point.
Amnesia in itself explored the same elements but with better results.
So... It is an improvement of the original. It's Yahtzee's definition of a good sequel WITHOUT numbers after its title. Which is fantastic.
I'm tired of CoD 17, Medieval Warfare. (Joking).

Leave it alone as a stand alone tittle, seems better that way. Then improve on the game-play in a new game with new environments.

No, It tied up pretty nicely, let's leave it as it is.

I could barely finish it, though.

Gosh darn it.

I think I made a stupid mistake.
By sequel I meant a game in the same style in a different story and time.
The way Dawn of War handles its sequels.

Well, by the way you are describing it, Amnesia is already a sequel. Frictional already made Penumbra (I consider Overture and Black Plague one game), but I do think Frictional will continue to make this style of game considering how successful Amnesia was.

A sequel wouldn't make a whole lot of sense, however more games in the same kind of style would be kind of cool.

But the more games they make in the same kind of pattern may make it kind of old.
Still games like Amnesia are more about plot and the psychological aspect then the actual gameplay so I can see them making several more games in several more setting before it gets old.

Agreed. Daniels Story is over but that doesn't mean a similar game by the same people following someone else's life wouldn't be bad.

I don't think Amnesia needs a sequel.

I would certainly like to see more survival horror games from the developer though. They're basically the only ones doing it right.

There's actually a lot of good user-made stories, if you have Desura. Or just wait for Frictional's next game. Hopefully it will be more like Penumbra in the storytelling department.
If you haven't played Penumbra Black Plague, go do so. Made by the same team as Amnesia. A little less refined, but still awesome.

Have you played the Penumbra games?

As always, only if they did it well. It seems like it should have a spiritual successor, though.

Amnesia is wonferfully self contained and I don't think a direct sequel is a good idea. More games from Frictional? Fuck yes, but I'd rather give them room to do whatever they want. I've resigned myself to being putty in their hands at this point and I wouldn't want it any other way.

Would prefer a new title. Not everything has to be a sequel and the ending(s) for Amnesia were quite fitting.

No. We know too much about the story and the monsters for it to be scary in a sequel. What made Amnesia good was that there was no heavy action involved. Once a threat is known though, horror disappears and usually action adventure takes its spot. Do we really need another Resident Evil franchise?

Sequels never seem to be as good these days, I think making one would ruin it all. Besides, it seems that it would be hard to top "You're being chased by a malevolent shadow and the only way to live is to get to the center of this castle" as a reason why you don't just jump out a window and get very, very, very far away from the castle and the horrors inside.

Not Amnesia but Penumbra horror I found needs a sequel using the game play from Amnesia .
Currently Penumbra I find bad compared as while its horrors music is good the foes pose almost no threat and reliable =ing not scary at all...
