This isn't a conventional problem BTW. My family is now doing a yearly Christmas tradition of giving away $300 worth of Walmart/Wegmans/ gift cards to a few families who can't afford to buy Christmas/Holidays "supplies". I'm the only kid in the family who thinks it's an awesome idea, I'm also the youngest, every other kid in the family being is all self centered and whiny/brattish about not getting better gifts on Christmas EVE! we're still having Christmas day, they're acting as if we're sacrificing our Christmas for someone else. Sending out (as an extended family by the way, that means aunts uncles etc,) $900 of gift cards to people who want to have a good Christmas is the least we could do. It's moments like this that I start to lose faith in humanity. Here's a quote of my 18 year old brother on the topic "Christmas is about making your family happy! It's not about making another persons family happy!" I swear to god I wanted to punch him in the mouth.

I wouldn't give away any money either though. Shouldn't they be getting money from elsewhere?

Being charitable is great and all, but this is something I might do for close friends who are having a tough time rather than complete strangers if I understand your post correctly. As for your brother, I would possibly consider smashing him in the face with a bag of bricks.

Thats very noble and mature of you =), good for you! Although probably not the best topic for escapist...i've read a quite a bit of threads...people here, no people in general are selfcentered, rude, childish, dicks who don't give a shit about anything else then themselves... sorry(to people who i'm referring to (no one specifically))

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. I fail to see why people need to have a specific day of the year set aside for showing generosity and goodwill towards their fellow humans. Why can't this just be the case every day? I'm seventeen and already Christmas has lost it's charm for me. I just honestly don't see the point. It's horrendously over-commericalised, anyway.

[small]It gets me off school for two weeks though, which is nice I suppose.[/small]

Good for you. It's always been about giving, not receiving. Most people are just to conceited to realize differently.

While charity works for some. It does not work for me.

900 dollars is a lot of money and in these times you must be wary.

I feel that you should cut your family out of this since you are imposing your ideals and getting violent.

In reality you are taking from your family and giving it to others. They are your family and they do have wants for Christmas too.

Well I've read the comments so far and I have some things to say (without quoting, just cause I'm too lazy).

1. I like the idea of being charitable ALL the time, it's just that during Christmas, it's harder to tell your kids "No, you can't have this for Christmas." When every company is shoving that item down your throat, when I get a job, I will probably give some of my paycheck to those who need it.

2. I'm imposing my ideals, but only because this is a basic thing, it shouldn't be a chore to help others in the harshest of times.

3. I've seen my Dad's paycheck, an extra $300 won't be a problem, trust me. In fact, we could probably stand to throw in a little more.

4. We kind-of know the families, they're local and belong to a certain Illness awareness group my stepmom belongs to, one of them is treating a child for Rheumatoid Arthritis while already in a tight position.

In any case, I thought I'd give a little more info on the topic.

Kill brother, make into food, feed homeless.
OR.
Tell him to shut the fuck up, beat him with brick, have a great Christmas.
