Does anyone else on this forum dread new messages as much as I do? Everytime I see that "Messages (1)" at the top of my screen, I click it with an ounce of trepidation and dread, like a child that has been beaten once too many times.

Getting new friends has become something of a lesson in phobia management, as I am sent a new message whenever anyone befriends me. I guess I just have a guilty mind, what with being on Probation for the second time in what seems like a week.

One day, I'm just sure I will have said or done something that is so horrible, that I thought was so funny, that I will be gone for real, and that will make me really sad, I love this place.

Damn.

I don't really view messages with anxiety. Most of them are "so and so wants to be your friend" to which I just click befriend and move on. I did notice, amusingly, that I got an influx of new friend messages once I added my new Prolific and Pillar of the Community badges. Interesting, no?

Still, messages are generally quite boring and though I'm sure I toe the probation line more often than is probably safe, I'm not really scared of such a thing :p

Most of my messages are ones that say someone has replied to one of my posts. But I have been getting more friends recently for no reason I can see. Not that I mind or anything.

I agree with Amnestic. I might be rather nervous if I just posted something contrary to everyone else's opinions, but that's about all (having to argue one's point is rather tiresome when you're me.....)

I don't worry about the BanHammer, though- I learned from a very young (Escapist) age to never make insulting or offensive posts with no discussion value.

I used to, but after having gotten a new message every time I'm quoted for a while, it has really made me less fearful.

I'm surprised people keep that on. I suppose it's helpful if you don't post as much... >_> considering my posting habits getting a message every time I'm quoted would leave a fair few for me to check through when I wake up.

Now I feel sad, noone ever actually friends me first. And I know I've already friended all you folks. Most of my messages are replies.
EDIT: Thank you Jamanticus, now I don't feel like such a lurker.

I find it kind of useful, so I don't have to go searching for the threads I've posted in.

I've yet to do something to piss off the mods, but I always keep an uncommon level of ettiquete on the internet. Even on the rare times I post on 4chan.

I've had about 5 or six every time I finish going through each of them for the past hour or so. It's why I haven't been able to get my much needed sleep.

I'm sorry, I didn't know that you have to befriend others first. I like you all the same. Gimme a hug!

...no, I don't mind.

It means people want to talk to me. I like talking to people. Why don't you like talking to people? You know that makes you a misanthrope, right?

Apologies for accusing you of misanthropy.

Hugs all around, I suppose, but yeah, all of the folks on my friends list (other than Jamnticus now) are folks that I added first.

That was a quick turn around there.

While that may be true, it's not very polite to say as much; just because someone's face looks like an ass doesn't mean you tell them their face is assly (assly...is that a word? I don't think so..)

...no, I'm talking about misanthropy [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Misanthropy], not lycanthropy [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lycanthropy]. Two very distinct things.

On another note, how much of a tool does it make me that I have no clue what you're talking about?

Apologies for the confusion.

I rather enjoy getting messages, myself. Although I do prefer getting involved in group convos, a slightly more, uhm, personal? direct? convo is entertaining from time to time. As I slip further into premature senility, I do enjoy a bit of rambling storytelling.

I can't stand them, now especially since they only come when so and so wants to be friends or I get quoted by so and so. I really need to get off my lazy ass and turn that off. Next time I'm quoted I'll do it.

But other then that, messages aren't that bad. Place to have a personal convo with a fellow Escapist and not piss people off in the forums for having it.
