It didn't even make sense that he was where he was and is still there in Fallout 3
It makes just as much sense as Harold wandering into the Capital Wasteland.

Ugh, Bethesda almost couldn't figure out how to put followers actually following?
That's not really quite difficult.
I believe this article is talking about the original Fallout.

I really don't like what they did with him to be honest.

That's not really quite difficult.

I mean, I know the their engine is kinda tricky, but even newbie mod developers figured it out on Oblivion, and paid professionals almost couldn't do it on Fallout 3? It's basically the same formula with some tweaks.

That's the main chain of thoughts passing through my mind at the moment anyway..

I liked Dogmeat. <3
The article refers to the ORIGINAL Fallout not to Fallout 3.

but what I'd like to know is whether or not Sam of I Am Legend is based on Dogmeat. True, one's a Blue Heeler and the other's a German Shepherd, but there definitely seems to be a bit of an homage going on -- or is that just me?
Boy, I knew Fallout was old, but I had no idea it was released before 1954.
Oh, don't be so snarky. If Sam was in the original version of I Am Legend, just say so. I've only seen the most recent version.
Ayjona is refering to the novel that I Am Legend is based on (released in 1954) however while it does feature a stray dog and Neville wanting it to become his dog it isn't anything like the relationship between Neville and Sam in the recent film version (although it's been a while since I read it so please feel free to correct me somebody)

EDIT: So the point I was planning on making but forgot to add is that the Neville/Sam relationship in the recent film version COULD have been influenced in some way by Fallout.

No, you're right.

Personally, I felt that the dog factor was an area that the film handled far better.

Dogmeat wasn't the best companion, sadly. Mainly down to Bethesda's appalling lack of ability to program friendly AI. For a company as big and experienced as they are, their AI is abysmal. After re-loading my save for the thousandth time I gave up and sent him to stay at Vault 101.

I liked him, but the dog from Fable was more useful. And more likeable. When he was limping around after a bandit kicked him I got very very angry at the bandit. Face met axe. Hilarity ensued. At least on my behalf, maybe less so on the bandit's.

In general I found the fable dog to be better characterized and more entertaining, but Dogmeat still rocks Fallout's socks.

Whoa, whoa, whoa. Guys, they're talking about the ORIGINAL Fallout. Tim Caine was the project director for the original project, and it was made by Black Isle studios which was a subsidiary of Interplay (both now defunct). This is not talking about Fallout 3, which was a bit of a dubious successor, I think. Not bad, mind you, just not as mind blowingly awesome as the first two; matter of fact, Fallout Tactics may have actually been marginally better than Fallout 3.

Meh Dogmeat was rubbish for Me he's more like Scooby Doo than a fearsome loyal dog.

I had to leave him to be devoured by ants in the ant infested town due to low health...I decided to fire shots in the air as a tribute.

Still he made a change from Roided up Fawkes stealing My Kills and Creeping Up on Me and making Me go mental.

Alas my Dogmeat in Fallout 3 was pretty useless. As soon as I had acquired him as a follower, he went and hurled himself off a cliff into some nuclear waste chasing after a Yao Gui.

I love Dogmeat. I like having such a loyal and reliable pet following me around all the time :D
In Fallout 3 I cheated, I made him "essential" so that he wouldn't die (he'd just fall unconscious, like other essential characters). It would have been so lonely without him!

I think Dogmeat lasted 5 minutes with me in Fallout 3? Poor Dogmeat.
That happened to me so often that finally, (after reloading my save) I just told him to wait for me at Vault 101. For the entire rest of the game.

What're these little article news update things? A way to draw in readers by explaining about the contents of the article? I'm curious is all. It seems like sometimes The Escapist just adds in new stuff (so far, good new stuff, which is what I've come to expect) without telling anyone about it. And I'm a man who always wants to know why something happened.

Dogmeat was great. Why would they not want to put that in the game? Once, though, I fast traveled and I turned around and he wasn't there. What happened?

I got Dogmeat...Then for some reason Dogmeat died, pretty much as quickly as you read this.

So unfortunately I never really got too know him.
Same here, but I may have been partially responsible. There was this giant radscorpion, you see, and dog meat went off to fight it. Fearing for my canine companions life, and the fact that I had gotten him 30 seconds ago, I promptly decided to end the fight as fast as possible and pulled out a rocket launcher. Suffice to say Dogmeat did not survive the following 4 explosions. I really need to think these things through.

Completely missed getting him on my first play through, then second time made a point of getting him soon as possible. Didn't have him very long though because I was having a stealth character and preferred stalking things awhile before taking a pop, whereas his plans were run and kill.

Plus I was always too worried about losing him all the time, hes sat outside vault 101 for special occasions.

You should try Dogmeat with Broken Steel loaded. He levels with you up to 30 and gains 500 health every level. My Dogmeat can currently survive several hits from a Fatman. Hooray for developers screw-ups.

Anyway, I'm glad that Dogmeat actually made it into Fallout(and followers in general). I can't imagine playing it without my little party. Plus, thanks to Fallout I know what Dog to buy when I'm older. Australian blue heelers are awesome.

I like Dogmeat more in the first fallout, the Dogmeat in Fallout 3 was kind of pain. Great to travel with, but entering any serious missions he was a liability. I didn't want him to die though, so I ended up sending him to Vault 101 for half of the game.

Dogmeat became a beloved companion in the Fallout series not only because he's a tough fighter that's great in a fight...
Well, they sure messed up on Fallout Triple then. I was about the use the console to rename him 'Deathclaw Magnet' or something.
