Don't Recommend Me an Anime

I am going to go really broad here. 90% all Anime that are not movies, 90% of all movies. 100% of all movies based on a anime series or a game.
But I am just being an asshole here:
If you didn't start watching and didn't get into Naruto (along side with movies and side-content) don't even bother trying. Unless you have time and access to all 550+ episodes and all the movies. They explain nothing, merely reference earlier things. Which to be honest I find good because otherwise every episode would be 10/22 minutes of recapping earlier things.

Also another note in C-minor:
Why does animes need title sequence and end credit sequences that can easily take 7 minutes of 22 minute episode + the Ad break screens which there can be up to 3 in 22 min episode.
And why the hell the title sequence has never anything to fucking do with the Anime itself.

Honestly:
Something just happened around the age of 16 to me: I lost interest and care for all Anime and very much most of Manga. (I still do own All Akira books and few things like that). Even something I started to watch and enjoyed a lot, i.e Planeteers (Also not recommended unless you want the same arc of drama IN EVERY EPISODE! And the female protagonist has the IQ of kitchen sponge!).
But I don't know I just can't seem to enjoy that stuff anymore, not even the art style, specially not the art direction on most of them. Somehow I disliked the idea of chekhov's gun being introduced 5 minutes in after title sequence (WHY THE FUCK DOES ANIME MOVIE NEED TITLE SEQUENCE?!)- does not apply to all movies).
Even Steamboy which is easily my favorite ones and start quite grounded on reality go off the balls towards the end.

Now that I think about it: I lost the taste for them around the time I started doing my Drama, Art and Music combined specialization along side with my Academic graduation. And the final stave was very quickly driven in with me starting my animation studies (still on going)
Somehow I started to appreciate European comics, animations more and their art-style/art direction more.

Sword Art Online. It's very rare of me to hate a show that much.
Infinite Stratos. Watch any other harem comedy.

Penguindrum- I literally feel like the only person who actively hate this anime. Everyone I've heard from say it's a masterpiece, and while I'm not one to tell them they're wrong, it just irritates me increasingly every time I hear this thing get praised. Yes, this is seriously one of the worst anime I've sat through, just for the amount of anger it fueled in me. It was such an infuriating sit for me. The style was repetitive, and paced painfully slow, the characters lacked any believability, the dialogue was comprised of the most trite philosophical drivel you hear in almost every anime, coming out of the mouths of every character, including the children, a flashback every five seconds, and it's clear that the anime's main concern was not to tell a cohesive, believable story, but to shove as much symbolic schlock down your throat until you choke. It throws so much twists and new plot points that not even the anime could keep up with itself. Sure, there are some nice things I can say. It made me laugh a few times, and at first I found the character behaviors to be strangely charming, but as it went on it started taking itself way too seriously, and all those good feeling quickly "disappeared" like those fucking kids in that fucking child broiler. I tried watching Revolutionary Girl Utena afterwards, which is from the same creator, because I wanted something to like, but I didn't even like that "classic"
The thing is. Some of the people who even LIKE Penguindrum, admit that it's pretty bad. Anything by Ikuhara is bound to be polarizing.

You may not know this, but I love watching shitty anime.
We might need another thread for "so bad it's good/amazing/enjoyable" titles. There are too many I can recommend.

Gonna kick another sacred cow here: Lucky Star

I originally watched it because I confused the title for Outlaw Star. Big mistake. Instead of space adventures I got high schoolers talking about crap. Fans of the show claim that "It is about nothing." Wrong. It is about something, just nothing interesting. Most boring show that I have ever seen. If you like dialogue reliant inside jokes that require trivial knowledge of another culture to understand, then the show is for you, but it's sure as hell not for me.

High School of the Dead. Worst I've ever seen. Fittingly enough, I was showed it by the neckbeardiest of douchebags I've met on this Earth.

Full Metal Panic. Normally, I would say this series is merely boring, with unfunny jokes, stereotypical main characters you will find in just about any other anime, and a story that is hardly worth mentioning.

HOWEVER, this series also has the absolute WORST fictional character I have ever encountered; Teletha "Tessa" Testarossa. Awesome name, HORRIBLE character! Maybe it's just me, but the very sight of her makes me rage! She is basically a Mary Sue given flesh! She is SOOO pretty (par for the course with anime, but whatever), she is a natural tactical genius, she manages to win a mech-battle against a seasoned veteran after just a few hours of training, she is a high-ranking commander despite being 16 years old or something and despite her being incredibly immature in her actions, she has that cutsey-poo voice that is annoying enough to make me want to rip my own ears off, and, of course, we are supposed to ROOT for her! When the villian enacts his great masterplan and holds her hostage at gunpoint, my reaction was basically "Just shoot her! Put her out of our misery!" Which is generally a surefire sign that something has gone wrong.

Like I said, that is just my opinion of Full Metal Panic. And to be fair, there are two episodes that are actually really good; they feature the protagonist, Sousuke Sagara, out on a mission. The episodes basically boils down to Sousuke and his squad being stalked by the villian and a henchman (who Sousuke knows since before), killing the soldiers one by one until only Sousuke remains, interspliced with cuts to the romantic lead, Kaname Chidori, waiting for his safe return. It is a really good pair of episodes, that unfortunately does nothing to elevate my opinion of the series as a whole...

Aw, I liked Anohana a lot >.>

There was a bit too much crying, however. I will give you that.

OT: I have seen a lot of shit anime, but one that sticks out in my mind is Rin. Holy shit is it bad. Do you enjoy when your protagonist is torture raped/killed every episode? Sometimes, more than once? Well, I've got an anime for you, my friend!

Also, why the fuck were all the characters naked for the entire last episode? Fucking schlock. Stay away.
Is Rin, Mnemosyne? It's what I found after google.

If it is, well, it's not that bad, I liked the fact time passes and we met three generations of a family.

Better than Anohana :D
Plus, Rin gives you the one scene you've wanted to happen since the very first episode...
A lesbian orgy!!

(Granted, all of the moaning is overshadowed by "plot-related" dialogue and the camera is just a bit too close to fully appreciate said lesbian orgy... But, those are just "minor" details...)

OT: Well, this is going to be tough, so I might just end up "recommending" more that not recommending... (Just as a heads up...)

*ahem*

Another - It's like a better Final Destination... and NOTHING'S better at doing what Final Destination does... except Final Destination... (Also, it involves middle school children... Yeah, I said it...)

Shin-chan - If you LOVE the original Crayon Shin-chan, then this version will shit all over it with abridged-like humor! (That's right... This version was abridging WAY before LittleKoriboh... That, alone, makes it unwatchable...)

Haganai - If you're not a dick and/or have no sense of humor for dickatry, then stay the hell away from this "harem" anime...

Gunslinger Girl (Both seasons) - If you'd rather see terrorist always getting shot in the face by little girls instead of actually caring about each of the character's interactions and/or philosophies, then the "boring" button has been set on the "ON" position for you...

Romeo X Juliet - Remember Shakespear's most popular masterpiece known as "Romeo and Juliet"? This series tries to do that story better... and fails hard...

...Okay... Enough of that joking about... Let's actually take this seriously this time... *keeps on joking*

*ahem*

Blood-C - It's like Blood+... only shorter and less satisfying...

Bleach - SPOILERS: The "bait-and-switch" in tone happens right when Season 2 begins... and it stops being just an action comedy...

Toriko - Censored AND not on the FOOD network? Fail...

Akira - Manga does it 100 times better...

...Yeah, not recommending stuff I hard for me... because I would most likely recommend each and every anime I just mentioned... (Just not at once and probably at different times...)

Most of the bad ones I know have already been mentioned.

Someone said Sword Art Online, I agree and disagree. The First story arc (that takes place in SAO itself) was pretty good, then it went off the rails badly. Lost all focus and since of urgency (and one of the few villains that can make a mass murderer sympathetic).

High School of the Dead though is defiantly the worst I have ever seen. Started out really good, and then BAM, shot itself with absurd fan-service and sexual-exploitation type scenes.

There is no reason whatsoever to watch it, even when you were a kid.

Since people already said Naruto, imma go ahead and not recommend NGE. I realise that you sort of have to watch it as education if you like anime, but as far as I can tell, it goes from cool premise to that sort of teambuilding filler stuff where they just defeat a new enemy every episode to some fucking creepy shit and ends with...congratulations.

EDIT: To be fair, it should get points for breaking from the typical structure. It's like there's a team of misfits and instead of having a rocky but functional beginning, breaking down and then pulling together for the final triumph, they start off rocky but functional, start showing how serious their issues are, and are still headcases at the anticlimactic end.

Elfenlied.

Would you believe me if I told you it wasn't the gratuitous violence and nudity that lead me to dislike it? That actually made it salvageable in my opinion and compelled me to make my own take on the anime. No, what brought Elfenlied down for me was the characters. They weren't believable, none of their actions to me seemed realistic or what someone in that situation would actually do. The behaviour of Kouta and Yuka in particular was so surreal to me; I just couldn't invest myself in their fantasy world.

Doesn't matter much though, it's still enjoyable just in a different way.

The most generic anime I have ever seen. Downright terrible jokes, terrible romance, and just so damn boring.
Wow. Didn't think i'd get ninja'd on that one.

It has to be the most boring anime I've ever seen. It's not that I disliked anything about it (didn't really like anything either), it's just that NOTHING HAPPENED. Atleast not by the 8th or 9th episode (stopped watching).

*definitely.

I'm sorry, I have to do that. Although I do agree, except I thought the absurd fanservice was the only reason people watched it. My main experience is a friend showing me a scene where a bullet expertly manouevres through a pair of bouncing tits.

To "enjoy" HotD you have to come to terms with that it's not trying to be anything intelligent. Just think of it as an over-the-top trashy action movie with tits, zombies and guns (in that order). And watch the Dub.

EDIT: The only reason I put it aside from other anime that dot he things you described, is that it doesn't PRETEND to have intelligence or a story and throw in constant fan-service and such. It didn't pretend to be something else, which is why I like it.

MD Geist 1 and 2 - picked these up when I thought 'cult hit' meant it was good. Nasty little action peices mainly concerned with destroying the human body in as many ways as possible, and nihilism. Though the nihilism ddoes lead to a jaw dropping twist at the end of part one that almost makes it worthwhile.

Odin - lost about a third of its running time for western release, its unclear whether the extra length would have saved it or just made it boring for longer.

Its kind of infamous as one of THE hackjob adaptations for american TV. They bought a girl aimed anime, and when they found out that, shock, girls liked it more than boys they:

Cut the first seven episodes entirely

Tried to make a supporting male character introduced in episode 8 into a main character to rival the heroine.

Trimmed or wrote out any romantic elements (though in one case... well, just wasn't gonna fly outside of Japan).

Rewrote the characters to be 'stronger' (read - obnoxious brats made insulting and combative, with any moments of concern showed for another character turned into insults, irritation or concern about something purely material)

Code Geass, character personalities suck and are vastly unrealistic. I know it is anime, but it was a really infantile display.

I'm gonna say Bleach.

Don't get me wrong, for your typical shounen action anime, it's a great... at first. But it just drags on for so long, it's just not worth getting invested in. It's got a real bad case of the lumberjacks [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A3XmjQySbL0] (except this one will never end). I'm not even going to mention the frequent filler arcs and one off episodes.

Fuck you, Don Kanonji.

Hopefully I don't get burned at the stake for this but Sword Art Online was woeful.

The protagonist has absolutely no flaws; it's like the writer was masturbating through wishful self-insertion.

Wow. That sentence wrote itself.
