some of us can't make it to QuakeCon, ergo pics or it didn't happen, dammit.
(Yeah, I'm hella-interested in all things Doom-y.)
(Yeah, I'm hella-interested in all things Doom-y.)
I only played Doom for the first time like 2 years ago, going up my way latter to play the Quake series (2 being basicly Doom with visuals that make it easy to understand where the player is supposed to be even though it is still maze like levels), passing through Duke Nukem 3D (the one I liked the most because of the mixture of open levels and recognizable places) and probably ending at Return to Wolfenstein (a more linear mix of Quake and Indiana Jones).Bindal said:I played Doom 1 and because I wasn't blinded by nostalgia, I could see how Doom actually was. And it was freaking BORING. I wasn't lying when I said that I spend more time finding the next door to get to the exit than anything else. Even shooting I wasn't doing as much as 'get lost in warehouse' (and yes, I played through all three original episodes despite being bored out of my mind in the middle of Ep1)josemlopes said:Doom 1 and 2 aged very well actually, its bare bones shooter action with that action being very well refined, its basicly a close quarters Serious Sam. Doom 3 on the other hand is poorly paced and doesnt really know what it wants to be.Bindal said:Too bad that Doom 1 and 2 didn't age well. Like... at all. Those "mazes" where you were looking for a freaking exit for one damn hour because nothing looked like anything and nothing made sense? No, thanks, I can live without that. I prefer to have semi-linear paths with side-ways like Half-Life.Clive Howlitzer said:Until I hear something about sprawling open level design, I am not interested. And the whole design of the maps was also horrible as everything looked like a warehouse. A lab? Looks like a warehouse. A waste disposal plant? Looks like a warehouse! Hell? You guessed it: WAREHOUSE!
Even the final level of Ep1 looked like a warehouse - despite the fact that there was a giant pentagram in the room FOR NO REASON! (which didn't make it any better)
And the gameplay was also not good as 99% of the enemies could be taken on with the Shotgun. The VERY rare case I couldn't? Rocket launcher. (Serious Sam on the other hand picking a weapon on the enemy is more important as taking on a Kleer with Rocket Launchers is bad - but so is using a shotgun against half of the Rocketeers. Plus the levels looked like something! And there were non-combat-phases where I had to do some basic platforming or - in case of BFE - basic switch-puzzles to break the monotony of 'shooting')
Sorry, but no, Doom 1 and 2 did not age well and those that claim are mostly wearing nostalgia googles.
I am obliged to make a jest about there also being an ice-themed level, possibly console exclusive.Steven Bogos said:Bethesda also stated that the game would run in 60 FPS 1080p on both the Xbox One and the PS4.
Erm, Doom 3 was the biggest selling game Id Software ever made, it may not be overly fondly remembered, but failure is hardly the right word. Also with Bethesda a PC release is a given.Rastrelly said:Ohmygawd, it was sooo hard to get, what made Doom popular back in 1993. They needed 10 years to figure out why Doom 3 failed.
Are you sure Doom 3 failed, or you are really so arrogant as to think your personal opinion bends reality to your perspective? Because last time I checked, Doom 3 was one of the largest commercial successes for id, and was loved by many new generation gamers, including some of us that were around for the original Doom games when they first came out.Rastrelly said:1) I did not hear "PC" anywhere.

I for one am excited for the new OO reboot. Yes to the ludicrous ultraviolence and no to the bloated file size and fugly textures, please!Vault101 said:that promo image is eather really stupid or cool....I cant decide
I wonder if they could do it in the vein of Wolfenstein....now that would be cool
Somehow I don't think fast paced gameplay will work for a console shooter.Steven Bogos said:"Doom is an origin game, about fast, FAST paced combat. It's about amazing guns and blood and gore and gibs."

Sounds promising. Must be a catch somewhere. He added that the new Doom will feature lots of enemies on screen with lots of gore and gibs. Oh, and it definitely won't feature regenerating health, as Marty said the game's fast-paced nature means players wont be able to sit behind a barrel for cover in every firefight.
God fucking damn it! No! Bad id!The game will also feature melee combat, with a "Karate" system,
Bahahaha! I'm sorry, that might be the funniest thing I've heard all day.Bethesda also stated that the game would run in 60 FPS 1080p on both the Xbox One and the PS4.
I am waiting for information on modding tools/SDK because without it, this game will die within 6 to 12 months. You don't make a Doom game and not have community modding capable because that is what kept classic Doom alive still to this day.Clive Howlitzer said:Until I hear something about sprawling open level design, I am not interested. Well....maybe they mean you can punch with both hands this time! It would certainly be a step forward for the series!Vivi22 said:God fucking damn it! No! Bad id!The game will also feature melee combat, with a "Karate" system,
The same could be said of the Call of Duty series.GarouxBloodline said:Because last time I checked, Doom 3 was one of the largest commercial successes for id, and was loved by many new generation gamers, including some of us that were around for the original Doom games when they first came out.
So, you measure game's quality by its commercial success? I think we have nothing to discuss then. I do not see any correlation between these two parameters. Doom 1 defined the whole genre as it looks today. Doom 3 ripped System Shock off. Doom 1 had unique visuals and setting (for its time) - in Doom 3 even Hell is stereotypically boring. Doom 3 is repetative, Doom 1 - never. I don't see any redeeming qualities of Doom 3, especially when there actually is System Shock 2 around.GarouxBloodline said:Are you sure Doom 3 failed, or you are really so arrogant as to think your personal opinion bends reality to your perspective? I will digress in that I am glad to hear they are bringing back fast-paced combat.
It could, if they used Wii U level graphics. Now you can laugh harder.Vivi22 said:Bahahaha! I'm sorry, that might be the funniest thing I've heard all day.Bethesda also stated that the game would run in 60 FPS 1080p on both the Xbox One and the PS4.
