Dittoing everything TsunamiWombat says. Do NOT play after a stressful day at work/school unless you have enough friends there with you to make a private game- 70% or more of all PuGs end when someone cries, lags, or has their brain suddenly switched out with a dead ferret, and they leave. There is a cushion for this, but one leaver usually leads to another until you're all alone (saying 'stay' only makes them leave faster). Blist remains a joke- a harsher penalty is required to make folks take it seriously.

If you want to try competitive play, definitely learn the lingo and what items work best with which hero- there are several online guides. Creep agro can be important to manage if you're alone, as well as denial. There was also a new hero recently introduced who is pretty good for beginners to use IMO- the Admiral. Good old Kardel Sharpeye, the Sniper, also qualifies, just be ready for folks to complain about your selection regardless. Me, I prefer ranged stunners like Rhasta, Viper and Traxex.

Ahhh the Admiral. So broken it's ridiculous. His splash skill blasts enemies skyward, but not turning them invulnerable. That means that while in the air, he and his allies can continue to kill the enemy. He also gets a 500-area full damage cleave and 60 damage every four seconds. I foresee a nerf soon. He works best with are disablers though (Axe, Magnus, Darkterror).

Sniper, Viper and Traxex are also "noob-friendly" heroes.

I agree on the statement "Public games == bad" Guess the problem is the sheer size of the player base, which means: you can behave like a moron, either as a host or as a "attendee" and a very broad "age" spectrum. I can only speak for Northrend (Europe) though and there public games are "exhausting" social wise. If you have enough friends to play a 3on3 or larger I would recommend doing just that.
Regarding starting heroes:: I would recommend strength heroes or classic tanks with a good disabler spell, like Treant Protector, Skeleton King and the giant bearded sea monster with the anchor

I play usually on the Garena client. Not very many people here use B-net.

It's the same there as B-net. There are a lot of people who talk trash but can't back it up (anonymity in the internet makes 'em feel like Superman), those who just talk trash for the heck of it and the leavers [http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/193667]. Others are the ones who leave [http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/287897] from the lobby after the game start countdown starts ticking.

-------------

In one of the old versions, me and my mates made a team of Sentinels, all of which have AOE ultimates: Treant, Crystal Maiden, Luna, Enigma and Silencer. That set wins all clashes we encountered on that game. Treant turns everyone invisible and waits by trees. Treant uses Overgrowth, Silencer uses Global Silence (effectively turning everyone in the opposing team into sitting ducks), Maiden and Luna unleash their Ultimates, then Enigma uses Blackhole to clean up the stragglers. When the ultimates are not available, we don't force clashes.

That's why I said Kardel and Proudmoore are good for someone just starting out. And I was just giving random examples for my heroes- I can do well with almost any ranged hero except Luna or Jakiro. I admit my big weakness is stealth heroes, particularly Clinx (both playing as and fighting).

Luna with Dominator is pretty much immortal if you ask me (given that she doesn't get focused on). Lifesteal works with her glaive, and each bounce gives back hp. The high movespeed gives great mobility when you need to hightail out of an aggressive area.

Jakiro on the other hand requires more finesse. Correct placement of the Ice breath (the one that freezes enemies) and Macropyre can shave a lot of HP.

As for stealth heroes, I prefer to get a Gem early on (or at least sentry wards) so that they can't go stealthy on me.

And have I mentioned that Admiral Proudmoore was broken?

Lulz, I learned from Rexxar.
Don't like Rexxar :( He bores me. Though his axes are pretty.
I'm also a beast with Meepo.
Meepo who jungles from 6+ is an absolute demon for equipment. He can have his full set of items and be level 25 while other people on his team are still running around 15-18. Assault Cuirass=imba with meepo too :D

I quite enjoy playing Visage and Dirge too. Most games where I play those two end up in a very near flawless victory for us, simply from harassment and imba push abilities.

His splash skill is basically a timed, targetted stun+slow with a fancy animation. I'm pretty good with Admiral too, though it's hard not to be when he's so goddamn imba with Tidebringer.

Luna with Dominator is pretty much immortal if you ask me (given that she doesn't get focused on). Lifesteal works with her glaive, and each bounce gives back hp. The high movespeed gives great mobility when you need to hightail out of an aggressive area.
I much prefer getting a manta style on Luna. The mana burn+images with your glaives is absolute rape on their mana pools. It's a matter of preference and how the game is going most of the time though, sometimes it's better to grab a dominator early than wait out for diffusal and then Manta.

giant bearded sea monster with the anchor
Leviathan the Tidehunter.

I play it off and on... I enjoy the game, but there's so many cutthroat players out there with nothing better to do than freak out that it becomes stressful to play.

When a game, something made to entertain, becomes stressful...

Yeah.
What do you mean, stressful?

Because you can kinda say that about every multiplayer game out there. Especially the fast ones like fps and strategy (Well, not so far i guess.)
DotA stands out in the stress category mainly because it's so momentum based. There are few real comebacks, so any little mistake can cost you a lot. Most of the people who play regularly know this, and hence a good deal of them are very up-tight about the game. I try not to be, but it's infectious.

I once played a pretty tight 100-minute game (this was waaaaaay back, I think it was in 6.13). All ten heroes are level 25 with god-like items. Both sides also had mega creeps. We lost because of the Bounty Hunter swooping in our base when we weren't looking (too focused on destroying the opponents' base).

I find DOTA frustrating to play, both for the annoying playerbase and the extreme, extreme, extreme of extremes emphasis on micro. EVERYTHING in DOTA depends on micro, and every little click, every little movement can contribute to a win or loss. It drives me nuts. Especially the art of 'last-hitting' and 'denying', which is extremely stressful, gives me a headache, and makes me want to quit forever.

So, no. I haven't played DOTA in awhile at this point, for the above mentioned reasons.

I tend not to like DotA games, mostly because I totally suck at it and there are so few games for noobs like myself to improve.

I'll stick to my piss-easy Green TD thanks.
