I always just dug Bioware for the stories, and Dragon Age was no exception. In fact alone its my favorite game for its characters and story. The game play is adequate, its what they tried revamping in Dragon Age 2. The less said about that subject, the better.

Basically if the story doesn't grab you then I would quit it, but personally I would recommend going farther into the game, say to at least your first time around party camp to make that decision.

DAMN I thought I got to the thread quickly enough. Ah well.

OT: Well I played on normal for about half the game before I got bored of being killed over and over and over by a Revenant at Redcliffe and switched to Casual and realising that difficulty only effected the DLCs achievements. Anyway combat gets more fun when you have more abilities and mages have upgraded spells though recasting haste after travelling to a new area does get tedious (where was the autocast?). Personally I had my Rogue literally become a Tank by the end of the game that was capable of using stealth and would've given Shale a run for her money. Also he had the star sword, which I got in late game after getting wardens peak, and blightblood, DLC weapon.

I guess I should just say the combat may get better or worst depending on how you play, I guess playing on casual feels slightly more dynamic as you don't have to look at things too hard but thats kinda how the mechanics were set up to be... Well combat didn't matter much to me I was too busy enjoying the story and banter with my party members.

If you don't like it now, you probably won't like it later, to be honest.

It might grow on you once you get a healer, etc. But if the core mechanics and speed are your problems, they ain't changing.

That said, the combat is my favorite part of it overall. Really dig how tactical it is. On my later playthroughs, I blew through all the dialogue just to get back to fighting stuff.

Role Playing = A game based around story over game play.
MMO RPG = A game based on reading quests over gameplay.

RPGs and MMOs have 0 gameplay i dont know why people buy them and expect to be entertained by the actual game.

Yes fallouts gameplay is bad
Yes oblivion gameplay is bad

The reviewers are payed off so if you got it because of the rating then sucks to be you.
It kinda reminds me of the starcraft review on this forum "After playing the whole game while only paying $60 it feels like im ripping blizzard off"

Ya funny but i didnt see anything good about starcraft other then the unneeded point and click of the ship, But hey they made me download it from blizzard what can i say, reviewers are a good investment give them a computer and they will be saying your game is better then sex
Holy shit, you're wrong on every god damned level possible.

I found Oblivion's gameplay to be awesome. Same with Fallout 3. And Dragon Age. And WoW. And the SWTOR demo I got to play. And Starcraft. And guess what? Millions of people agree with me.

So yeah, it's very rare that I say this, but you're just outright wrong.
Careful, it sounds like you're trying to say that people can have different opinions on what is good or bad, as opposed to some games simply being garbage where a massive conspiracy theory is what causes them to sell!

Dragon Age II's combat is effing insane to do, even on Casual. Me being the not really RPG fan, can someone promise me Mass Effect 2 is more of a shooter than RPG. Cause I'm getting my ass kicked in Act 1 of DAII and I'm going to sell it, because it's mightily pissing me off.
I can. The combat in ME2 is awesome.

Imagine a good third-person cover based shooter with some really cool abilities to spice it up with. The squad movement and ability controls are very easy to use as well.

I intend it haha. Are there cheats for Dragon Age II, does anyone know? I'd love a god mode cheat!
I'm sure there's some way to get infinite health, at least if you're running the PC version.

I recently bought Dragon Age: Origins (Ultimate Edition) during the EA sale on Steam since I'm a big Mass Effect fan and figured I'd like it. I've now played for a bit and I'm currently on my way to light the beacon during the battle at Ostagar and I'm really not enjoying myself.

Now, I have a fair share of other problems with the game but what's by far the biggest thorn in my side is the combat. It's just so incredibly dull and in no way satisfying, to me it feels like somebody took World of Warcraft and and slowed it down to a quarter of the speed. Did anyone else feel like this? Does it get better later?

I'm playing a Warrior, using two-handed weapons and I'm on normal difficulty.
I thought that the combat was much better than any game of this type. The combat won't speed up, but later on you will need to use tactics and every companion's abilities so you won't hst be sitting there and just watching your character attack. In the begining combat is pretty much sitting and watching your character slowly kill enemies, but it wil get better later on :)

It has a much slower pace than most games nowadays; lots of fiddling with gear, tactics flowcharts, and pause menus.

But stick with it. It does kind of suck until you get out of Ostagar/Lothering and the world opens up to you (I actually put the game down for a while around where you are for over a week because it was so dull) but it does get a lot better once you're out of the first act.

I'm one of the minority in saying that I had a similar experience that I talked about a few months ago [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.274582-The-Last-Action-Gamer-Dragon-Age-2-related-first-post-edited] (be careful if you're gonna read the rest of that; some people's responses [including my own] might give you a migraine). While I enjoyed the overall package DAO supplied, the combat was not one thing I found particularly enthralling, although being a two-hand rogue was all right even if Master Combat Stealth made everyone short of a boss incredibly retarded.

And the OP's not saying s/he found the game hard. S/He said they found it dull. Drab. Slogging. Boring. Maybe even sleep-inducing. That is definitely not the same thing as a game being "hard".

That's one thing I like about how DA2 is so much more fast-paced. Sure, the pause-and-play mechanic is still there, but stuff is happening fast enough so that I still have to think on the fly about when to do what (AND I was a support healer/force mage!) as opposed to trying premeditated strategies that will most likely blow up in my face. Of course, DA2's combat system could've been better, but so could've DAO's (just speaking as an individual; many people aren't gonna agree with me on this).

And so help me if one of you even jokes about calling me a brainless, console-playing retard or any equivalent thereof...

I had a similar problem. I started playing as a mage and just didn't enjoy the combat. Then I restarted as a 2H warrior and loved it. I think you just need to play around with the opening stories until you find one that suits what you're after.

Not only is it a pause and play style. You haven't gotten very far into the game. You're not giving it a chance.

If I wasn't intent on giving the game a chance, why would I create an entire thread about the issue that's right now keeping my from playing more of it?

Assuming that's a compliment ("there's no such thing as tone on the internet" a friend used to say before I stopped talking to her), thanks. I try. :)

It definitely was. You summarized exactly what I was trying to get across in my initial thread and a couple of the following responses.

Set the difficulty to nightmare. If that's not enough, download the mod that makes nightmare mode harder.

If that's not enough, solo it.

this might be your problem here, I found warrior to be pretty boring in da:eek: rogue was a bit more fun, mage was even better, but really until you start getting abilities da:eek: is kinda boring, its one of those game series that tries its hardest to make you not want to play it, not to mention the start of the game at ostergar is just.... boring and bland
