Set the difficulty to nightmare. If that's not enough, download the mod that makes nightmare mode harder.

If that's not enough, solo it.
The difficulty, as I've stated many times now, is not the problem.

I just find the combat mechanics themselves dull.

It is a pause n' play style game. That is just the way it is.
Care to elaborate?

I've tried to make full use of the tactical pausing however it doesn't seem to work any better than simply clicking on a dude and waiting until he's dead.
You pause the game and queue abilities.

EDIT: Early on, it won't make much of a difference. Later you will be forced to use tactics.
He missed something big: ALWAYS KILL THE MAGE.

And I find the combat very dull on the lower difficulty settings. You don't think it could possibly be related?

Once you have someone with Mana Clash, enemy mages are no longer a threat.

In your case, sure.
In mine, no.

I feel that there's already an adequate challenge level of challenge on normal for me.

I would like to point out that you took the most difficult classes and specs to get into. I have NEVER found 2h warrior to be that engaging in DA:O. You might want to try Sword and Shield or Two-weapon. The main problem is the lack of fluidity with a two handed warrior in and of itself.

If you're looking for variety or a more engaging style, I highly recommend any of these styles.

Oh, archers are also somewhat interesting when played right. Pick up a poison skill and start using bombs or pick up a trap making skill and start making the battlefield hazardous for your enemies.

Noted, I'll try changing it up a bit or simply picking a different class entirely.

The first one will speed up after Ostagar, but yeah it's the cooldown system of WoW. What I DO like though is #2's combat system. It's played more like an adventure hack-and-slash than 1, and even though normal abilities have cooldowns, your main attack is press-to-hit like Zelda or God of War. Also, Hawke is voiced, so dialogue is more fun.

To me Bioware still have not mastered fun combat mechanics. DA:O had a few basics that I found absolutely frustrating.

1. Auto attack. Pretty much everything except your casters are best to just sustain powers and auto attack.
2. Mages do everything.

The strategy of the game is very, very watered down once you realise just a few basic combinations (glyphs, anyone?) that trivialise pretty much every fight.

Oh, did I mention auto attack? So. Very. Boring.

And OP, maybe this style of game just isn't for you, it sounds like.
Well this sort of combat definitely isn't for me, no question about that, but the role playing elements and decision making is something I really like. I'm searching for a balance where the combat isn't frustrating or dull enough to keep me from advancing through the story.
