Kill it, then eat it. Think about it; how often do you get the chance to eat a dragon steak?

Depends:
Metallic dragons I'd befriend.

But chromatic ones? Slay!

Remember, if the scales shine, you'll be fine. But if they're red, you're gonna be dead

EDIT: If they're black, you'll be a snack
If they're white, your end is in sight
If they're green, say goodbye to your spleen
If they're blue, your life is through
If they're brown, they'll beat you down
If they're grey, run away
*ahem* and if it's orange?

i'd probably befriend it, then use it to subdue the Starks and conquer the Seven Kingdoms. also, i think dragons are probably smart enough, and much much scarier, to the point where it's not you deciding on whether or not it'll be a fight.

Well, I've never heard of Orange Dragons in the Realms, but I suppose it would go like this

"If it's orange, run away, because it will f*****g eat you before you come up with something that rhymes."

Spike is my pet dragon's name. He's good at writing and sending messages.

I would befriend it no matter what. Despite what kind it is, classic, shapeshifting, Asian, European, whatever.
Whatever knowledge they had, I'd take it. All of their magic, their tactics, everything-- I'd be their greatest student.

Though, my main concern would be uniting humans and dragons. I mean, obviously not ALL of humanity would be up to it, but seriously, that'd give us a KICK ASS army to fight the aliens with. And it's better than humans fighting dragons. They'd kick OUR asses.

My only concern would be us, being our stupid, violent selves, using the dragons to fight EACH OTHER. Then the aliens would just laugh at us.

I'd let it decide, either it becomes my own personal badass flying chauffeur, or I kick it's ass back to the stone age.

I would befriend it and make a vow with it. I would request that at the end of my life (say 50's for a hero) as I began to become old and grey we would battle to the death to end our glorious friendship.

Between that time we would travel the world with the knowledge of ancient mysteries and the young imagination of a hero.

If I was to win the battle I would take care of his broodling till the end of my days and pass on it's ancient mysteries and if it won I would be buried in a gold coffin in the heart of his lair.

Befriend it, ride it keep it. Although if it has eggs it's dinner time when they mature.

Neither of the options presented in the OP are valid, Giant fire-breathing hell-beasts cannot be slain or spoken to. You run, hide and hope it moves on (much like a swarm of bees).

I would definitely befriend because saying that you have a dragon as a friend trumps any other kind of animal partnership (the exception being dinosaurs).

Who's a fluffy wuffy? *ROOAAARRR!!!!!*
That's right, you are!

That's my answer :)
P.S. I'd do the same with a spider the size of an elephant

In the event that dragons were real I would also be a necromancer so I'm going to kill the thing and bring it pack as my pet. Dogs are overrated...

I think that one picture will say it all:

A dead dragon isn't half as much family fun as a live one.

This should work out fine until the first good 25 man raid comes along.
