My favorite genre, by far, is RPGs. More specifically, I favor JRPGs (whether they be Action-RPGs or a traditional turn-based affair). Other than Fallout 1 & 2, I haven't played many WRPGs.
My least favorite genre is FPSs and sport games.

Before I go talking about why I like/dislike them, I'd like to say that this is just my opinion. If you happen to like FPSs, then that's great. I don't have a problem with that. Different strokes for different folks and all that.

With RPGs, I like lengthy and multifaceted plots that take place on a grand scale, unique characters that I can build up over time, and vast worlds to explore. Compared to that, FPSs come up as boring and shallow, in my opinion.
I'm not really the first-person perspective. I like being able to see my character, as opposed to playing what seems like a floating gun... not that it matters in FPSs, as your always playing some kind of generic soldier/space marine. Aesthetically, if given the choice, I prefer swords and fantasy over guns and gritty realism.
I'll admit it's cathartic to go around shooting the crap out of stuff, to a point, but it's tempered by the fact that I'm just not very good at FPSs. More often than not, I'm the one who's getting blown up (if you've seen the "I Suck at Call of Duty" video, that's pretty much me).
No matter the genre, I prefer single-player, being pretty introverted. RPGs, among other genres, usually cater to that, but genres like FPSs seem to be focused more on the multi-player experience.
As for sports games... well, what can I say? I'm your stereotypical nerd who's never been interested in sports, whether in real life or a video game.

My favourite games are RPGS, and third person platform/action hybrids.

Least favourite, probably sports titles, but that is only because of one reason.

I love me some WRPGs although the odd JRPG has caught my attention (let's face it people, the pokemon games are technically JRPGs.) I'm not a huge fan of FPS's, at least not multi-player ones, aside from TF2. Strategy is very hit-and-miss but I can't get enough battle for middle earth 2.
My favourites though, are ye olde style platformers. Abe's odyssey, Braid, Limbo, these are the games of kings.

My favorite is RPG, any kind; western, Japanese. I don't care.

My most played is shooter simply because that's what I happen to have the most of for some reason.

Least favorite is sports.

I don't have set genres for the most part. Generally, I play whatever I find fun. But I'd have to say JRPGs and WRPGs(mostly J) are the two kinds of games I find the most fun. Stealth, hack n' slash, adventure, puzzles, all of those are super fun, too. I'm loathe to play FPS games mostly because I'm terrible at them and all my friends are better, and want to play me all the time to they can win. >> As for sports games, I see literally no purpose outside of being able to experience the sport when it's not ___ season. So I don't play those.

I like WRPG and I'm not a particular fan of JRPG, it's not that I don't think they're good games (although they could do with a lot less exposition and more interweaving of the plot into the gameplay) I just don't see the appeal of turn-based combat, it just feels awkward and I never feel like anything I do has much to do with my input.

That being said my favourite genre is Survival Horror, which is still a young genre, probably the youngest, when you compare it to all others like platformers, puzzlers, fighters, shooters, racing and sports. Although that doesn't mean I don't like cuddly, fluffy games either like Bust-A-Move 2 or Kirby's Dream World.

I like some first-person shooters, mostly ones that don't revolve around a real-world setting. I like the ones that have a little more character to them as opposed to games like Call Of Duty or Modern Warfare since those games always felt a little dry to me and just not very exciting. I'd much rather be playing Halo, DOOM, Serious Sam, Bioshock, Blood or Half Life as the narrative and/or gameplay is often a lot more entertaining.

I also love games like Devil May Cry and Bayonetta I'm just fond of racking up those style points with a succession of moves using the little exploits you can get in those games and beating the shit out of things with stupid weapons is just hilarious fun.

I don't really have a favorite (I play (W)RPGs, fighters, music/rhythm, action/adventure, strategy, and Ace Attorney games).

I don't *hate* RTSs, but after a point I don't have the patience to micromanage that much. I like Civ though.

I hate FPSs, and JRPGs with distinctly Japanese plotlines/melodrama/etc (like Final Fantasy, Tales, etc). The only JRPG franchises I can stand (if they count) are Pokemon and Fire Emblem.

i have actually found it nigh impossible to find a genre i dont like. i guess i belong to all genre's. sometimes i dont like a game but that doesnt turn me off the genre. for example, I did not like operation flashpoint dragon rising however i love operation flashpoint red river. thats just one of many instances. i like shooters whether it be first or third person i like mmorpg, jrpg, platform, sandbox.... if i continue ill never stop. the point is; dont dislike a game genre because of one, two or even three particular games. chances are you will find a game you love that belongs to a genre you think you hate. try them all!

Persona 3(JRPG), Fallout 3/NV (Shooter/RPG), Diablo II(WRPG) and Starcraft 2 (RTS) are my favourite games, and I do enjoy playing the occasional Modern Warfare 2 (FPS). So yeah, I play just about everything.

So this pops up often but it's been picking at me for a while. I frequently see people and, more surprisingly, game critics frequently compare certain genres to certain groups of people and vice versa. They are claiming that the people who enjoy, say, JRPs don't like games like Halo or Call of Duty, or that those who play stealth games primarily hate shooters, or strategic shooting game players disliking arcade run and guns Even Western RPGers disliking Japanese RPGs. I'm interested in seeing if this hold true to the escapist community.

So, hit me with your preferred genre, and then your least preferred genre. Not necessarily one you don't play or that you hate, but the one you play the least. To round things out, explain why you don't play them as much. Now I want you to look back at what you wrote and tell me if you fall into a common generalization.

I personally fall into the "Western RPG fans don't like JRPGs." I do try the occasional JRPG that's different from the rest to see if this still applies however.
Likes : Any game with good plot, fairly realistic situations, relate-able characters and awesome gameplay.

Dislikes : Games without at least any 3 of those, because why should I eat a cheeseburger without the cheese and the sesame seeds on the bun?

Pure bullshit, all the way through. Personally, I'm an Everything Gamer.
I enjoy FPSes, and I enjoy stealth games. I like strategy games, and I like run-and-guns. I love Western RPGs, and I love jRPGs. The only genre I refuse to play is the sports games.

I'm a big Shooter fan, and I also love Action/Adventure games.
My least favorite/played type of video-game is JRPGs. To be honest, I'm not really into anything Japanese (besides sushi).

Well, I started on platformers back in the day, and Kirby's Adventure was my fave.

I next hit an RTS phase with Age of Empires 2 and Caesar 3, which has grown into now playing Civ 5, Caesar 4, and Star Craft 2.

Moved into the RPG phase, which I entered with Pokies Red and Blue when I finally got my hands on some Final Fantasies, Seven and Tactics respectively. Tactics remains my favorite game of all time because the job class system is huge but understanding and the story is like Hamlet and MacBeth had a possessed love child.

Flirted briefly with some genre rip-offs like a Lord of the Rings rpg that pulled a story left hand turn out of NO WHERE that sent me into an ALL CAPS RAGE and a bizarre rip on Devil May Cry wearing a Nightmare Before Christmas mask.

There are a few fighting games I've enjoyed, like the Super Smash Bros. Series. Label me a fangirl if you must (looking at YOU, Yahtzee) but I've had some really, REALLY fun times playing those games, button mashing be damned.

Recently I've grown out of love with jRPGs and have gotten into bed with Western ones, like Dragon Age and Mass Effect (oh Bioware, you tease), but not those giant open ones like Elder Scrolls, where I literally forget my quest objective for the dicking around. And I HATE Fable, it can just go die.

Really the only first person shooter I've played because I enjoy it is Left 4 Dead. Still need to play the sequel and see if I like it. I've played the crap out of that game, but can't stand Call of Duty or Halo. So meh. Oh, though I was really pleasantly surprised by Bioshock.

Never played a sports sim unless you count Blitzball, and I haven't really played a driving game unless you count the Simpson's Road Rage. That was a blast.

Oh, and I JUST got into the MOBA style of games with League of Legends. It's a blast, when I'm in the zone and don't suck.

Long story short, there is nothing I won't try, but there are some genre's I'm better at than others, and some types of game that don't do it for me, but I like to think I'm an eclectic, open minded gamer.

favorite(s): RPG's and turn based strategy

least favorite: RTS and ..sandbox games i guess

rts is generally too competitive, i absolutely hate that, and i generally just don't enjoy myself too much playing them, the only ones i liked are the Age of empire games and empire earth.

and sandbox games tend to get pretty boring...yeah you can do anything, but what is the point? not to say i don't enjoy some sandbox games but i hardly touch them...

and alot of your stereotypes dont fit, i like all rpg's (j and w) and i also love strategic shooters but i will sit down and play a few hours of quake or unreal with some friends anytime.
