People are JUST finding out about Dwarf Fortress??
Welcome to 2006!

Being an asshole aside, at least they fixed the zombie fish. God damn zombie fish.

To be fair, it's been majorly overhauled since then, what with it being 3D and all for one. That, and there was a gigantic update in April with a whole buncha new features. I think DF always could deserve some more attention anyway.

And what fix are you talking about? Skeletal carp still stalk the lands, slaying all who dare oppose them like some horrible twisted GYO fan-fic. Granted, they've been toned down a bit. There are plenty of new horrors now that randomly generated beasts stalk beneath the Earth and darker randomly generated horrors beneath even that, so the aquatic menace is the least of your concerns.

I love this game. As for stories... none. I'm kind of an altoholic, compulsively restarting in any game I play. I know the beginning tutorial for TES: Oblivion so well that I'm tempted to try it blindfolded. I never got a WoW Character above level 34, but I've had at least 20 different starts. So, no I have no stories, but yes, I'd love to do an LP.

I can't figure it out at all and the wiki on it seems to be playing a totally different version of the game with only a very loose similarity. :/

Like, the only thing i can build is a farm and nobody will actually build it, they just wander around all the time not doing anything at all.

There was recently a new slew of versions released for the game that changed quite a few elements dramatically, the wiki's been playing catch-up ever since.

Best way to learn the game is probably through a video tutorial like these ones:

He's playing the newer version as well, so it's relevant.

And you need farmers to build farms, the land also needs to be irrigated with water or nothing will grow anyway. G'luck!

So several people have expressed interest in a succession game, but nobody mentions specifics. I might just have to go set one up myself, but I'm wondering what sort of style we should go for? Any newbies out there interested in giving it a shot? Or should I just pick some impossibly difficult biome so those of us familiar with game can see it go to hell? Should it be 24-hour or week-long turns?

At this point I'm about ready to go for it, but I think it would be more courteous to see what the community would prefer.

It'll be a blast, folks!

Edit so this is a bit less low-content: Dwarf Fortress really is an amazing game. Just download it. It's free and everything. Even if you aren't interested in playing you could still sign up as a character. Look up Syrupleaf on SA and see what kind of mayhem awaits!
I have tried playing it before, but the problem I have is the murderous learning curve. Even if it is for The Greater Good.

The wiki [http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/Main_Page], as requested. Better bookmark this, you'll need it often.
The game itself [http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/] for those who missed the post on page 1.

That said, I'm only an imagehost and a batch uploader short of starting an LP game here and will commence doing so when anyone can provide me with either of these.

Sounds like an interesting game, but the graphics... is it really as confusing and abstract as the screenshots I've seen? Because otherwise, I'd probably give it a go.

Sweet! Count me in. I'd recommend just using http://imageshack.us/ for pictures, and http://dffd.wimbli.com/ has a specific section for uploading community game files. Can't wait!

It is rather confusing, but I'd check out the tilesets/visualizers I mentioned on page 1. This game really is worth forgetting about the graphics for. If it still is too much, in old LPs some people would stick around to have a dwarf named after them and write journals to provide their perspective for recent events. A LP would be a good opportunity for learning what to do since others would be setting up the basics before you and are there for advice.

Annoyingly enough, legends mode isn't accessible while fortresses are up and running. A common practice to use it regardless of that is to copy the save you're on. Then you can abandon the fortress on the copied save and check out legends without sacrificing the fortresss.

Anyone interested in some of the current developments? He's messing around with "entity populations," that is, generic characters not tracked in legends mode unless there is some significant interaction with them. The reduction in memory usage will allow for civilization populations of over 750k, beating out The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall, as the most realistically scaled fantasy game. He recently posted a map showing off urban sprawl, adding farming villages and the like, and main towns function more as trading centers and are often placed according to nearby water systems. I think that's going to be an incredible new feature.

EDIT: I think if a few newbies would like to sign up, I should link this here as well: The Lazy/Newb Pack, comes with a graphics set preinstalled so you don't have to fiddle with anything, as well as a few extra tools and a visualizer with updated support for the most recent version.

So, would this go down similar to Boatmurdered? With everyone doing a year or whatever and then passing it? Because if we do that, you can count me in.

From what i can tell, it's like that for everyone.

I think there's probably a lot more going on in the background than needs to be.

I've wanted to play it but I must say without something explaining things piece by piece I'm rather intimidated by the ASCII and total lack of comprehension I have for it.

Something like Boatmurdered. Depending on how many people sign up, might have 24-hours turns and a looping player list instead of year-long turns. It's all up Asehujiko since it looks like he is going to be hosting.

It actually runs fine for me (running at the cap of 100FPS, I'm on XP with 2GB) without any work really going into it, but the wiki has a page for tips if things are screwy:

http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/40d:Maximizing_framerate

That page is for 40D but most of the information carries over. Using the SDL version instead of the legacy one helps as well, but you might have to try changing the "Print Mode" setting in the init file if there are problems. Generating smaller worlds with less caverns also helps.

Graphics problem? What graphics? It's symbolic representation of objects in the game's world, not graphical presentations that show you what they actually look like. Downloading a graphical patch actually does give you crappy graphics.
[small] Plus everything looks so cluttered, like someone decided to vomit all over the screen instead of the nice and readable ASCII[/small]

[HEADING=3]What? What are you talking about? How else are you supposed to understand what's going on?[/HEADING]

Seriously though, I don't have a problem with people preferring to play the way they want to play. It just gets on my nerves when people dismiss the game entirely despite the options available.

I've tried a couple times to get into Dwarf Fortress, never hard enough though. I know I can because I managed to get into Bay12's liberation game and enjoyed it quite a bit... even though I never got far. I lways started dwarf fort at night though, when I was nearing time to sleep so it was always difficult to do.

Plans for tomorrow: Play Dwarf Fortress all day and get my head round it. I look forward to having my fort massacred.

Or you could always join us whenever the succession game starts. Having a few newbies never hurts when the Fun is at its best when it's going downhill.

EDIT: Oh, missed the post about clutter. I was actually referring to what a visual mess some graphics tilesets become rather than the fortress layout. When everything is sprited instead of alphanumeric code, you have to admit things aren't quite as readable.
