It's a team objective based FPS Half-Life 2 mod and it is gorgeous. http://www.dystopia-game.com

Admittedly there is a learning curve to this game. It tends to get a lot of Counter-Strike players who ask how to buy weapons. But once you get the swing of it, it's one of the best games I've played. It is an exclusively multiplayer game and there seem to be no plans to change that in the near future.

The long and the short of it is you have the Corps (hired rent-a-cops basically) and the Punks (organized anarchists I guess) and they don't like each other. On most maps you have the Punks attacking an instalation guarded by the Corps but there are some reverse maps.

There are three player types; the light, the medium, and the heavy. Each has access to a unique selection of weapons plus various implants that are used during the match. It has a very updated Sega Genesis Shadowrun feel without the magic (and I don't count the Microsoft remake), right down to the use of a physical model for hacking and dueling in cyberspace.

It's a free mod, and that's impressive given the work that's gone into it. Availbe through the Steam Store (again, for free), though it does require HL2 to play. There's even the Dystopia Global League for professional (and somewhat unprofessional) official matches.

Personally I'd like to see Yahtzee review this game mod but given it's somewhat indie nature, the fact it's exclusively online multi-shooter and the fact it's not a stand-alone game I'm not hopeful to see it up on Zero Punctuation.

Anyway when I'm not MMOing I'm either playing mahjong or this. Check it out, but by all means PLEASE read the new player guide before diving in (the tutorial map doesn't really teach anything other than how to move and jump and use the use key) because while the community is higher brow than your typical X Box Live night in Halo, you're not gonna get a whole team waiting for you to figure out how to break green ice in cyberspace.

While it's all well and good that you're trying to expose us to new games, kindly take your advertisements somewhere else. If you wish to advertise on the Escapist, contact the parent company for options.

In the meantime, I have PMed a moderator to have this thread locked. Thank you, and have a nice day.

Steam is not the Escapist. If Valve wants to have their products advertised, they can pay for it like any other company.

Dystopia has no affiliation with Valve. Like most third party mods, they're free to download. Dystopia is free, so this is not really an advertisement, simply a player expressing his interest in the mod.

Why would you attempt to have this thread locked? I'm confused, he's not broken any rules... at all. He's informing people of a game that's available, a free game at that. Are you saying people aren't allowed to post threads discussing games on this video game discussion forum? I'm not sure how you can advertise free software. I can only assume you didn't read his post.

Anyway, back on topic.

I played dystopia a few years back while it was still in beta. It was tons of fun, I'm glad to see they finally got around to releasing a full version. I remember being extremely impressed with the map design and cyberspace hacking elements. Very cool game.

No, he's not promoting discussion, he's advertising. Where in the thread is there a topic for discussion? Notice that he has a single post and no profile picture.

He has broken rules. Namely that you don't advertise for free on the Escapist Forums.

You should have probably put this in reviews and reviewed the game rather than this 'advertisement' (Not that I disapprove).

I tried playing this once but the master servers were down for over a month so I couldn't..

He's not advertising dude, it's not his game, he's recommending it to you. There's a difference. Also the game is free, how do you advertise a free game?

I think not reading the original post in a thread before commenting on it is more in violation of the rules than posting a game recommendation.

It doesn't matter weather you pay or not. He signed up for the Escapist just to tell us to play this game, thats what Spam bots do. It's illegal.

Suggest this be moved to reviews section. Not Gaming Discussion. There's no discussion here, just a review-ish thing.

I read the entire post, I didn't get the notion at all that he was a spambot. In fact his last two paragraphs seem very personable. I don't see what all the commotion is about, people just like to police the forums I guess. Not a very nice way to welcome a new member.

"Hey guys here's a game I like, you should check it out."

"I'm reporting you for advertising a game, welcome to the escapist."

Gah! So many quotes! Anyways, I am still waiting for him to do another post... waiting... hmm Thats odd, he hasn't posted anything else yet? He posted his post late at night when there are no moderators, made it sound friendly and real. Also, I didn't even report him, I am just agreeing with Flying_Emu that it is advertising.

The "dudes from here" can't do something about it if the offender is not reported. Is that such a difficult concept?

I'm not acting like I'm in charge; I'm acting like someone who knows a spammer and has read the Forum Guidelines.

Did you read the Forum rules and guidelines? I'm assuming not. Posts like this are discouraged either way; they are not conducive to discussion, which is what this board is SUPPOSED to be about.

Although I agree that it would be more suited to the User Reviews section perhaps. There it would be merited.

I'm not trying to be rude. I doing what one should do in the event of a spammer. Inform the authorities.

First off, when you're editing quotes (which is supposedly against the rules) it's best you don't misquote the people who said them.

Second, it took me over a month to create my profile after I joined, so the fact that he doesn't have one doesn't necessarily make him a spambot. I'll admit it's a bit odd that he hasn't posted again in his own thread. Anyway, I'm done discussing this, this thread should be locked for the unneccessary drama alone.

And why is it that this isn't causing discussion? Because everyone is arguing over whether it's an ad or not! Seriously, if we actually ignored that completely we could be having a proper discussion here about the topic started by the OP, who has informed us about a free mod on steam (free, I'd like you to notice: the games devs get nothing for it being downloaded and therefore there is no financial reward for this being posted here and getting people to play), and leaves the rest of the thread fully open for us to discuss it. Even if the poster has signed up merely to post this, he's not encouraging us to spend money, and thus it's more of a way of informing us of something that we may be interested in downloading (FOR FREE) and may enjoy playing.

[/rant]

Anyway, on topic:

I have played Dystopia for a bit, and while I think it's very well done, I'm not certain how much I enjoyed it. It may have been the somewhat confusing map or the fact that the tutorial doesn't explain cyberspace that well, but I just found myself very confused as to what to do for most of it. My personal feeling is that it would work far better as a single player game: there's potential to build a very interesting world and a story around it, potential which I feel is wasted on a multiplayer game

[/constructive post conducive to further discussion]
