Somehow, I'm less than confident that this tech well be present on Kinect-free systems. There's no bloody reason that video and especially voice, as is being described here in the whole "interact with your games in new ways" thing, can't be done say...on PC (or even PS3, Wii etc...) with a microphone/headset and webcam of sufficient quality; yet, somehow it seems to be Kinect-centric.
SOE just announced that, with just your standard webcam and mic, EverQuest 2 (not a new game by far, similar to WoW's age) is going to be capable to place your facial expression on your character's face, animate as you talk, and transmit VOIP complete with vocal morphs of your choice. All this Microsoft shilling talking about how it isn't possible to officially FUS-RO-DAH in Skyrim without Kinect (despite the fact a bloody MOD created the ability to do so on the PC version, prior to the announcement of the Kinect-only X360 option patch - note, those with XboxLive compatible headsets aren't good enough, unless something has changed - you actually need a Kinect!), is getting really tiring.
If there's going to be new OPTIONS (and they had better bloody be options) for vocal and video interactions with games, that's great. However, I want to see them done equally across all platforms with some open APIs/open source technology, not something that is only present that requires not just proprietary software support built into the game, but proprietary hardware as well. Oh, and I'd like to enjoy these interactions without having to worry about Microsoft's "By using Kinect, we actually can record all it sees and hears, and let the data harvest commence whenever the damn thing is bloody on, in perpetuity" EULA.
