Go there, kill that, drive there, kill final boss...woohoo you saved whatever that needed saving.
That's every game ever, save puzzle games like Tetris.
Mario? Run there, jump there, save the princess, woohoo.
Modern Warfare? Run there, duck there, jump there, shoot there, aim there, saves the world, woohoo.
Dragon Age? Run there, attack that, talk to them, save the world, woohoo.
Command and Conquer? Build that, train that, move there, kill those, save the world, woohoo.
Every game can be broken down to these basic terms.
If you're going to do it to FPS games you don't like, be prepared to do the same to games you love and see how
they fare.
It isn't that these games are all basically, fundamentally similar, it's how they pull it off. The perspective is just that: The perspective. Zeno Clash, for example, is first person, but it is
nothing like, say, Crysis. And Crysis, while using military-style guns and such, is
nothing like Modern Warfare. The two are extremely different, save
perspective.
Besides: There were many 'shooter' games announced, sure, but there were plenty that weren't shooters. Fable 3 was discussed, Gran Turismo 5 was given a release date, the new Twisted Metal, practically the entirety of the Nintendo conference, Metal Gear: Rising, Civilization 5 (Which looks awesome), and more! You just have to know where to look!
FPS games are here to stay. That has to be said.
But other genres aren't dying out or going away. Every few years the popular genres change. I remember when RTS games were HUGE, and then it was RPGs for a while, and now we're at shooters. Times and popular genres change. I say just enjoy the ride.
