wait what? Didn't the Xbox come out first? If you have a HUGE head start against a console in the beginning, and you still lose the console war at the end then microsoft fails hard. Jesus christ. Way to turn a 10 mile lead into a -100 mile lead.
The 360 came out first. Before that, you had the original Xbox. Which came out
after the PS2, and was pretty much doomed to second place by virtue of the fact that the PS2 was more popular than God for a 5 year period. And the reason for that is because Sony had already trounced Nintendo the previous generation, and had instilled the word 'Playstation' in every console gamer's mind.
The fact that Microsoft came to the console market an entire generation after Sony, yet has managed to end two generations of Playstation dominance with the 360, actually says rather good things about the way they've marketed the thing.
uhh, no, that was the Wii, the 360 had a year's headstart on both of them and now look, the Wii has opened up a whole new market for gaming and has sold almost twice the consoles Microsoft has, the PS3 on the other hand was met by many things, for a start, Xbox had a full year headstart and unlike Sony, Completely abandoned their previous Xbox owners and trying to establish itself as a hardcore gaming demographic. Sony had released PS3 in 2006 and is catching up on the 360, fast, by the end of 2011 I wouldn't be surprised if the PS3 gets into 2nd place(or joint 2nd)think about it this way, if all 3 consoles came out on the same date in 2005 as the 360 did, what would the sales be? because if we count from the day the Wii launched (November 17th 2006) you'd know that the PS3 would be ahead of the 360.
P.S: sorry if that came off as fanboyish, I wasn't trying to be, but don't say *this* single-handedly beat *that*, it's anoying.
off topic:If the PS2, Gamecube and Xbox hadn't killed Sega and the Dreamcast, what would the Videogame industry be like today? I think it would be alot bigger, with Nintendo and Sega fighting in the casual market and Sony and microsoft fighting in the gaming market, with either sides not getting properly into both(e.g. things like the Move and Kinect wuld completely bomb) also there would be more handheld stuff, the PSP would be around, the DS still king but Sega would probably have some sort of handheld but microsoft, ehh... probably not.
