Depends.

Horror - Easy (I prefer the experience to be more scary than frustrating)
Weird :p especially in horror games, I pick hard, for it makes the enemies harder (doh) thus more of a threat. Most _real_ horror games (not counting in shooters with a lot of gore) let you escape from the monsters anyways, instead of making you fight them. Only good exception (that comes to my mind now): Condemned - but they managed to make the gameplay both fun and suspenseful at the same time. Kudos to Monolith.

In most other games I pick normal, since I'm not that much of a great gamer (I wanted to say nerd but that might offend some of you hee hee :p) but don't like to rush through it without having any challenge. I go for the overall experience, which sucks if you get no tension from hard parts.

I start on normal then work my way up.
Except for Gears where i completed both of them on hardcore first and worked my way up...and failed the second one on insane cause they turned me into swiss cheese. :(

I guess I didn't explain what I meant clearly enough. I've never had much of a tolerance for scary things. I mean, the first horror movie I had ever seen was the Village, and that scared me senseless. That was years ago, mind you, but the concept remains. I played FEAR and FEAR2 on Normal, but Dead Space on Easy. Why? FEAR wasn't all that scary, but Dead Space was downright crazy. If I had to worry about my health any more than I did already, I doubt I'd have been able to sleep at night.

Heh, funny, FEAR and Dead Space were exactly the two things that came to my mind when I was saying that shooters with a lot of gore are no horror games. But now I can see where you're going :p

Hard. Start of playing games on a hard mode means you won't be so much of a pussy when you go to beat your friends online.

It depends on the game. For things like Call of Duty I tend to do Expert (although World at War had so many random, unavoidable deaths by grenades I stopped), but when it is a game like Condemned or FEAR where I'm playing for the scares (and in the latter case not for the mediocre combat), I'll do something easier like medium or easy.

Normal, and then I'll replay on the higher difficulties if I feel that the game warrants another go (but that's very rare and reserved for games with exceptional gameplay mechanics, like Devil May Cry or God of War.)

Hard, unless it's a game that I've got absolutely no idea how to play. Then I'll start off with normal.

I only ever play games that have an Ultra Violence difficulty. Admittedly, this has limited my game choice somewhat.

i play whatever the lowest difficulty needed to unlock the hardest difficulty is, then i do the hardest. first play through for fun to familiarize my self, then second is the serious one.

Easy or normal. Usually normal, but if i find the game to be too difficult i switch to easy.

Im not one of those maniacs who feel orgasms for beating a game on its hardest difficullity.

-Normal: Too much pride for Easy and not Masochistic enough to take Hard in case the game is Devil May Cry 3
-Hard: After Normal because it's natural proggression (exept in some games where I play normal and it's so easy I switch to the insane difficulty to get satisfaction).

Easy to get used to the game, then I start a new game with (or switch to) Normal. I don't like Hard in any game.
