To the "leave them alone and hope they leave us alone" argument: I don't see why something as equally wrong, such as Child Pornography, is punished by a prison sentence. Surely if we are punishing people for a deep perversion in one area, we should allow equal punihment in others.

And I was misleading you before, I have been tricked into looking at some of that stuff. I know what I saw, and it is far more disgusting than you'd think. There is stuff out there that actually made me projectile vomit when I saw it. There is stuff that seemed to scar my soul.
Child pornography is criminal because children are being forced/coerced into committing sexual acts. Cartoons depicting tentacle rape, or children having sex, isn't illegal because no one's actually committing sexual acts. Even if it's icky.

So, Joe, if octopus rape *were* on the rise, would you support the abolition of hentai on the grounds of animal rights, or do you feel that freedom of speech trumps the environmental concern for octo-normative sexuality?

Actually, yeah it is. The simple act of possesion of child pronogtraphy - not the manufacture of it - is illegal, and punishable by a prison sentence. The same also applies to hentai pedophilia, also known as Lolicon, from the english lolita. It similarly carries a prison sentence.
In which jurisdiction? Cartoon child porn is in fact legal to possess and create, again as long as real children aren't involved.

The blue ring octopus is a danger to us all and must be regulated and controlled. The second amendment includes the right to bear arms, not the right to bear eight tentacles!

Wow. This issue certainly sparked a lot of... interesting conversations.

I'm kind of amazed to see hentai compared to child pornography. The latter is illegal because possession of child pornography is possession of incontrovertible evidence of child abuse. It's seen as corroboration in a crime because if you find such evidence (of child abuse or murder or any other felony) you're supposed to report it to the police if you're a responsible citizen. There is no way this is even in the same ballpark as having cartoon porn.

The Japanese are certainly not alone in weird fetishes or cartoon porn, either. If you're inclined to look around you can find a great deal of very American cartoon porn depicting all kinds of atrocities visited on Disney characters. The Japanese have their own spin with the tentacles and machines and whatnot, but Cthulhu didn't come from Japan, and Cthulhu sex is its own sub-demographic of porn that you can find all over the internet and in many cases in print. I would also say just personally that there is nothing I could see in hentai that wouldn't disturb me more than some of the things that real people do with their bodies (the disturbing large number of people who have died of ruptured colons from having sex with horses, for instance -- and let's not even get into German scat fetishes) -- because it isn't real. Though I should say this is largely a theory on my part, because I haven't seen La Blue Girl and don't ever intend to. Still -- not real < real.

Bottom line, people of all cultures are capable of some really extravagantly wrong-in-the-head fetishes in pursuit of the forbidden and the dark side of sex. The Japanese don't have a corner on the market by a long shot.

I love it when someone says something on a thread that is exactly what I would say, except better. It means all I have to do is point and say "That". Thanks.

Meh...another non-gaming issue, more article of absolutely no interest to me.

Is The Escapist trying to quietly turn into a "culture" magazine (I have no better term for this) or a Reader's Digest? If so, why not state it out loud?

Are you guys running out of subject matter?
The more of these The Escapist puts out, the less likely I am to come back to read the articles. Granted, you've got a healthy credit with me yet, but I hope this pattern changes soon.

Some of these articles may indeed be good... but they're not what I'm here for.

Nothing to do with this thread's Hentai theme, I'm afraid.

Alot of videogames come from Japan, to understand them we need to understand Japan. Or so i think they reasoned. Besides, if one is gonna get 5 articles on gaming every week and still manage to feel unique they need to branch out.

Aaaand... there goes the thread. On the bright side, I had no IDEA Hello Kitty had a toaster. I shoulda figured, maybe... but I CERTAINLY didn't imagine it toasting Hello Kitty's very VISAGE upon the toast. It's like some kind of royal seal. Eerie and ominous and cute at the same time!
I'm also kinda glad I read that "Every Little Things She Does is Magic" bit- I can now believe that they have a motive behind the madness on the screen. Of course, Powerpuff Girls was probably madness, from their perspective. At any rate, thanks for Cowboy Bebop, Japan.

Dude, the only person who thinks hentai is controversial is you. Stop being crazy.

PS: I don't care what you classify as devil worship or immoral. Stop proselytizing, too.

I have to admit I didn't know about the Hello Kitty toaster, either, until some enterprising soul from the art department put it on the article.

It had a similar effect on me as the keyboard.
