Egg Donation

So about 4 years ago I read an article about the shortage of egg donors (and sperm donors but there's nothing I can do about that) and decided that, since I wasn't going to be using all or possibly any of them and the idea of someone finding me 18 years later didn't bother me, I would donate some of my eggs. Several of my aunts and uncles have had trouble conceiving and one of my cousins came from a donor egg so I feel like this is my way of helping other people in their situations.

I decided to wait until I was 20 so I had plenty of time to think about it and make a more mature decision. I turn 20 in less than a month and I definitely still want to do this but I would also like to hear other people's input. Obviously I've talked to family and friends but I figure the more people I talk to the better. I'd like, if possible, to hear from other donors and people who benefited from donations but anyone's opinion is welcome. Thanks.

I don't see what'd be wrong about that.
It helps a lot of people and if you're personally okay with it, go ahead.

A shortage of sperm donors? Wtf? Put on a tight shirt and go to any bar and you will find dozens of happy sperm donors. Hell I would donate myself as long as the chick retrieves it herself.
Anyway do they at least pay you for your eggs?
Anyone born using sperm or eggs donated after April 2005 (I think) is allowed to find out the identity of their genetic parents when they turn 18 which stops a lot of people from doing it.

It's actually illegal to pay someone for their eggs but they have something to reimburse you in some countries. I'm doing it in England and I doubt the NHS does that.

Id say go for it. At the very least if someone comes finding you 20 years later and says they came from your genetic make-up then they might at least be rich or famous or something....

although the opposite could be true as well, they can be utter useless dipshits how dont have pocket lint to their name coming to ask for a hand-out.

its a gamble, but your really the only one who can make the call since it could possibly be directly impacting your future life.

Although my vote is against. there are already enough humans running around ruining things, the last thing we need is reinforcements.

I read the title of the thread, and I thought this was gonna be about, you know "actual" eggs.
To which I say: "I fuckin' hate eggs!"

On topic, I say do it.

Do it if that is what you really want.

And what is so wrong with that child knowing that you are his/her real parent. It's hardly like they will come after you and kill you.

Well actually, with all this teenage angst.....

I'd love to say its a great idea but I can't as I feel this planet is already way to over populated. Couples who'd like a child and can't should look more towards adoption that way they aren't adding a new mouth to feed but rather just taking care of one that already exists.

Wait... a shortage means low supply... which means they pay donors more! Dammit... Stupid age keeping me from donating sperm...

I will of course do whatever I want and I do plan on going through with this I just wanted to hear what other people thought about it.

I have no problems with the idea of someone finding me when they're older. I have no legal requirement to do anything for them and as far as I'm concerned their real parents are the ones who not only raised them but in the case of their mother gave birth to them.

It's a lot easier decision to be a sperm donor, than an egg donor because of the limited number of ovaries a woman has in her lifetime. If you're prepared to do it and have thought about it enough - go for it.

You seem to be sure about this, and the Escapist isn't the place where you'll find too many people freaking out about this.

Are you just curious about our opinions?

The only thing that would worry me is the fact that the procedure itself is rather intrusive (plus hormone injections to increase egg production beforehand), plus there is a chance that it could leave you sterile - make sure you research the hospital beforehand and make sure they have a REALLY good reputation.

It might help to locate a forum or site online where people who have done this before and those who are thinking about it can talk, it'll help you to get a realistic idea of what is involved and what the emotional implications are afterwards - it sounds as though you have a good idea of the medical side of things already.

Think you got a little confused hun - women have two ovaries - although I do concede that this is a very limited number. Women have around 300,000 egg cells at puberty, but release around 400 in their lifetime, so I think that she'll be safe from running out anytime soon...

The process for egg donation is also a lot more difficult. They give you the IVF treatment then put you under general anesthetic and stick a big needle in you to suck the eggs out. You can only do it a maximum of ten times so there's no danger of running out of eggs. It certainly won't stop me from having my own kids later on if I want to.

Actually you should makes sure and research the laws in your area to see if there have been any cases where a biological parent has been forced to provide for an offspring even if they didnt raise them.

Being in the US we have tons of retarded litigation like that where you wouldnt think it would be ruled that way but it usually doesnt.

Good for you, my love.
I think I'll do it when I'm older, I imagine there's an age restriction.
I don't want kids, but I know some people who do and can't.
I hope it goes well for you.

In this country you have to be between 18 and 35. They ask for a detailed family medical history and there may be other requirements I don't know about.

From what I've read, a history of liver disease or cancer might make things tricky because of the medications used, but anything more in-depth than this would need a doctors opinion...
