Elder Scrolls Multiplayer Possible But Unlikely, Says Bethesda Marketing Boss

You will still have the same problem of some jack ass joining the game killing your NPCs for lulz then leaving. I had this problem playing Fable 2 and 3 with my brother... For Elder Scrolls to work multiplayer style it would never be system link, and the game wouldn't have a story line tailored to any single person with very little NPC interaction, or it would be a silly death match arena. It's like how people were praying for Mass Effect 2 to have a multiplayer arena before it was released some things just don't work. Pretty much if it's a multiplayer experience you want not involving funky plastic guitars, or shooting people then hack and slash dungeon crawlers are the way to go. Already brings back memories of Gauntlet 64 joining in a 3 person game as the forth person at lv 1 when everyone else was lv 15 got the nickname "Wast of Space on the Screen."

Some games shouldn't even think about having a multiplayer and this is one.

How about some fan made multiplayer?

A modded multiplayer for PC players would be nice, and I'm fairly certain can be pulled off with great results.

Co-op multiplayer is what Bethesda's entire RPG lineup has been missing all along. Their games' fun factor would increase multiple times over by making it possible to play with even 1 friend, and 2 or 3 more? ...awesome. I would predict that their sales would be multiplied at least by 2, possibly by 3. A friend bought both Fallout 3 and New Vegas, and I know that I personally would have bought both to play with my friend if I could have co-oped with him. So there's two lost sales you can count up.

Regarding the whole "quality of game issue", Bethesda has modders fixing bugs and adding missing features for their games all day long. So I'm going to discard the "our professionalism is keeping us from making a bad game by adding multiplayer" answer, because Bethesda games are bad anyways in terms of quality and absent features.

And since not 1, but 2 modders have reported getting faux multiplayer working in Oblivion (I tested 1 early solution and the other player did show up in game, running around and doing stuff) I have to say they're overestimating the difficulty.

This sounds like a corporate BS answer to me - someone has all kinds of well-explained reasons why you can't do something that's proven by other industry players to increase the popularity of the product, and all of those reasons show how smart, professional and deserving of their paycheck that person is.

News flash Mr. Hines - it's never a bad idea to allow people to share an entertainment experience together, esp. when every additional person means an additional sale.

After Oblivion and Fallout 3, they really need to focus on making the main storyline at least decent.
I really liked the main quests for those games...

OT: I think that the concept has potential, but in the end multi-player TES is just a different animal -- and I liked the old one. I want to see that beast groomed and touted up to perfection. If they want a multiplayer games based in that universe, I say they should save it for another game.

I really hope those people in the industry realise not every game needs multiplayer

I mean Dead space 2....that was just insulting

As much as it saddens me that the Elder Scrolls lacks multiplayer I respect that they just wish to do what they're best at to the utmost.

I wonder if it's something they've considered adding in a DLC or expansion.

I still expect it to come out buggy as hell but at least I can always count on TES for quality thought while its in development.

i'd enjoy a co-op RPG. <.<

Not many of those around that doesn't require you to interact with a whole lot of idiots.

I love that people try to tell me to "Go play WoW or CoD" if I want my multiplayer fix. I've played those games. I want to play with a coop partner in the ELDER SCROLLS universe. They are completely different games. I don't want it to be team deathmatch. I don't want to worry about high level douches ganking me. I just want to enjoy the world with a friend (or 2,or 3...I think 4 player coop is pushing it too close to MMO territory) I want to have my stealthy archer build be able to strike from the shadows while by buddy's hammer wielding Orc bashes in skulls and keeps them busy.

It would be a nice change of pace to have a competent companion in an ES game. I don't need the story to change to acknowledge the other players. The AI doesn't need to change much to compensate for the increase in players. The enemies already fight with my companions. Loot isn't much of a problem either since I wouldn't be building the same character as my buddy and therefore wouldn't need the same stuff. Besides, sharing is good.

I understand that Skyrim won't have multiplayer. I will love it regardless. I'm already taking my vacation the week it comes out just so I can lose myself in it. I am just hoping that, one day, I'll get to enjoy the ES universe with a buddy or 2. Multiplayer isn't required in every game, but the potential is there with ES. I, for one, am really looking foward to it in the future.

It's going to have to be -really- good if I'm going to bother buying it without any multiplayer. Oblivion lost it's appeal to me a long time ago because I couldn't play it with my friends. I never even got into Fallout 3 for much the same reason.

w00tage pretty much summed up my opinion on it all. They just want to skip out on the extra development time, which I guess is understandable. Unfortunate, but that's today's game industry for you.

I want to love these games for the incredibly immersive experience they bring, but I can't stay interested without someone to share the experience with. It all just ends up feeling empty to me.

From a Xbox point of view they could put in something where you can host your friends in a co-op dungeon with a bunch of characters which only level within Multiplayer through a series of challenges!

If you wanted to put it in a dungeon creator where you make your own dungeons that would add an element for someone to be the D.M!

This need not be an Elder Scrolls game but lets face it including this in an already established game at least allows it to get released!

Unlike the slew of European RPG's which get released in the US and mainland Europe but not in the UK. Two Worlds 2 I am looking at you!

I would have no objection to Bethsoft making a separate MMO once Skyrim is done... but I wouldn't buy it. Leave my Skyrim alone with the multiplayer nonsense, and make it the stand-out single-player RPG that the Elder Scrolls games are known for. Other people suck, I don't want them in my games, unless they are targets for me to kill :)

I'd rather have them focusing on the singleplayer campaign. Games have already proven in the past that you don't need a multiplayer to deliver a thrilling experience.

And to that, I add: BioShock.

But still, multiplayer would be reeeeeeeeally good...
It would, but only as an extra. Single player comes first, thank you very much Bethesda. :D
