Tom Clancy is pretty straightforward. Anything by him should put you on easy street.

I did mine last year and trust me, you don't want a simple book. Simple books are impossible to find a theme/question for. You want a book that's pretty easy to understand, but with a clear message or theme, as the chances are your question will revolve around theme or message.
I went with Empire of the Sun, by J.G.Ballard. The book was a bit hard going and depressing, but it had plenty of themes to talk about in my essay. It helps if you find a book you enjoy, as it's much easier to write about something that you actually enjoyed and have developed opinions about. Do you read in your spare time a lot? Or hardly ever?
If you have a genre that you enjoy then your teacher should have some suggestions for authors within said genre.
Good luck and let us know what you pick.

Fair enough, but in my experience people who say they don't enjoy reading just haven't found the right author, or genre of literature.
A murder/crime thriller isn't a bad idea actually, they are usually very readable as the twists and turns keep the story interesting. Make sure though that you choose one with either a very clear theme or analysable villain, will make your job much, much easier. :)

You are very welcome, I don't blame you for coming here for help with this, it seemed really daunting to me at first. Pretty hard ask for 5th year high school students when, if your English department is anything like mine, they don't actually teach you how to write critical essays, they just expect you to figure it out by yourself.

If you really want to impress your teacher you could go for The Narrative of A. Gordon Pym of Nantucket By Edgar Allen Poe.
