Epic?

For those of you who play WoW, wouldn't you agree that killing a giant dragon or boss of some sort with a few other players feels pretty damn epic? That was one of the things I really loved about WoW that I don't see too often in modern games, a sense of epic-ness. I personally attribute this to the developers' ever-growing chase for realism in games, since 5 people armed with swords and staffs taking down a beast made out of pure molten malevolence that's 400 times their size is a tad unbelievable. Does anyone else share this feeling that the quantity of truly epic events in games is sadly on the downfall?

However "epic" the setup is, to me the whole "epic" feeling is undermined by knowing the whole match could be predicted and entirely reproduced from the start by using a spreadsheet.

Epic...To me, is something like: The Omaha beach mission in MOHAA, the final mission (Requiem) in Hitman 4 Blood Money, the 2 final targets in Assassin's Creed, final mission in CoD4... Something like that.

CoD 4 definitely has a few epic moments.

I have to admit that WoW had a few as well, but no more than any other MMORPG I have played. One of the biggest wow factors in a MMORPG has to be Anarchy Online's Yalmaha. That was amazing and worth the pain to get it.

I do agree wholeheartedly with CoD4's epic moments, but when I mentioned WoW, I should have elaborated that I meant most MMOs, as the concept of mass teamwork usually entails bigger and subsequently more epic baddies to fight.

Gears 2 looks epic
Hehe, how long did it take you to come up with that one.

I though Okami was really epic. The way you get to spread greenery and flowers over the landscape...

God of war has lot's of epic moments too, as did Mass effect, and that nuke in COD4..

As a matter of fact I think the statement by the OP that epic moments in games are on the downfall is completely wrong. But maybe I'm just easily impressed.

Yeah, it saddens me when people say the PS2 is history, and I wish I could show them the hydra from 1, or the ongoing giant Statue battle from the start of 2. I really think it makes some 360 games look average in comparison. (I aint had much experience of PS3 but it doesnt seem too much different to 360 to my undereducated eyes).

A Yahtzee recommendation too.

Painkiller, every boss, especially the first one, its like fighting something from Shadow of the Colossus, but about 5 years earlier.

I do agree with WOW tho, the first time I got to Uldaman and fought the giant dwarf statue, whoa.

Then later on I think its one of the level 70 dungeons, where you fight Murmur, and you can hardly even see his head he's so big.

However, as I've been told many a time, 'size isnt everything' heh, and I agree that the Omaha beach landing event in Medal of Honor and other things like that equally earn the word.

Agree with Okami too, dropping a boss and seeing the colours flow across the land as nature reclaims it hold on the area is amazing.

I'd have to backup my ps2/current gen comments by stating I mean that I find a graphical style generally more impressive and enjoyable than mere resolution and poly counts, is all, I know there's beautiful games on the current machines, but I still think some PS2 stuff can look better than some of the new stuff.

You haven't played Battleground in Crysis Wars yet :I
A good game of power struggle can be super epic if you got 2 really good teams goin at it.

I'd say its overused too.

I'm a pretty casual WOW player, yet my level 70 priest is almost completely decked out in EPIC quality gear.

I'm sure back before the expansion, epic gear used to be quite stand out, and I think maybe they should introduce a level above epic that's <1% drops from the tougher bosses, so maybe only a handful of people on any server will ever have one. Of course people will farm em, but it should reduce the 'everyone wearing stuff that only one was ever made of' problem.

I also know there's 'Orange' Legendary gear, but I'm choosing to ignore that as it destroys my argument partly, and there's still far too many people with Warglaives around.

I just scrolled to the bottom of this page, and there is a WoW ad that says "your definition of Epic will be shattered"

Funny.

To me, an epic game is more about the epicness of the adventure the character goes though. Okami is a good example, and another one I just finished was The Longest Journey. Both adventures allow you to experience vast fantastical worlds and save them from certain doom. High stakes and poor odds (at least from the character's standpoint) usually makes a good recipe for "Epic"

Who's to say realism can't be epic?

I mean, really, do people seriously think that it's impossible for real life situations to be epic?

Also, some people think that extreme unrealism just isn't epic because it's so easy to punch holes in. (Me.)

I thought that the last fight in Vegas 2 was epic and realistic.

Also, Rollerball, both old and new had the best endings I've ever seen (I'd call them epic I guess).

I concider the definition of epic to be the accomplishing of the seemingly impossible under suicide-like odds. And epic situations can be found in mostly any game under the right circumstances.

"Epic fail!" is the exact opposite. :D

The custom map 'Kriegstadt' for Red Orchestra, it's the only thing that I've played that could ever be considered 'epic'.

Realism makes things all the more epic, because it's harder to do.

I WANT CRYSIS WARHEAD!
