there is more of this yes? cause it gets all of my approval
I just finished reading through the archives (saw this [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/comics/critical-miss/10024-On-Reviews] comic posted on some image site and thought 'oh wow what else did I miss').PH3NOmenon said:How exactly was Critical Miss ripping off Penny Arcade?
I've been a fan both both for a while now, but I never saw any real similarities aside from "videogames".
I might be blinded by proximity, but could someone explain it to me?
Actually, Penny Arcade keeps getting less funny with obvious reference jokes anyone can make.rhodo said:You WISH you were ripping Penny Arcade and/or Calvin&Hobbes.
You aren't nearly good enough to possibly be mistaken for one of those two comics. But keep dreaming!
Oh my God... I love you... Why did Waterson have to retire? *sniff*Rainboq said:On the topic of tributes to Calvin & Hobbes, here have some Bacon & Hobbes.

But thank you posting it anyway :')
Because he was afraid of the strip getting stagant and too self referential... *cough* Garfield *cough*Krantos said:CALVIN AND HOBBES!
Wait... How the hell are you copying C&H? Crit Miss is nothing like C&H.
Stout has schizophrenia, Calvin has adventures with his stuffed Tiger. There's no overlap there.
No offense, but you also have a long way to go to come close to C&H.

I can respect that, I'd rather it stopped while it was still great then ... well Garfield ...Rainboq said:Because he was afraid of the strip getting stagant and too self referential... *cough* Garfield *cough*
Indeed, Garfield really should stop.Lunar Templar said:I can respect that, I'd rather it stopped while it was still great then ... well Garfield ...Rainboq said:Because he was afraid of the strip getting stagant and too self referential... *cough* Garfield *cough*
"Ripping off" ≠ "Being mistaken for"rhodo said:You WISH you were ripping Penny Arcade and/or Calvin&Hobbes.

It's not semantics, you completely misunderstood what I wrote. People always assume Penny Arcade is our central influences. It isn't. I never said anything about being mistaken for either strip.rhodo said:Grey Carter said:"Ripping off" ≠ "Being mistaken for"rhodo said:You WISH you were ripping Penny Arcade and/or Calvin&Hobbes.

Sure, grasp to semantics. That's totally gonna disprove the point I'm trying to make.
No, because that's not how the English language works. Saying something is a "rip off of" or is "inspired by" product x does, in no way shape or form, imply it's as good as, indistinguishable from or easily mistaken for said product in terms of quality. If you think it does, you're wrong. If I wanted to say "my comic is just like Calvin and Hobbes!" I would write exactly that. I didn't write that. You misunderstood. I can't possibly make this any clearer.rhodo said:Very well, I suppose I need to explain in detail since you still keep missing the point.
You said "copying" is not the same thing as "being mistaken for". Since there's zero chances of anyone possibly mistaking your comic for Penny Arcade or Calvin&Hobbes, of course it can only be "copying". Which is why I used that word ("ripping off") when making my comment.
So, is it clear now?
Do you mean I'm telling you that sometimes things get better over time? Yes. [http://penny-arcade.com/comic/1998/11/18] Yes, I am. [http://penny-arcade.com/comic] Do I think Critical Miss gets better as Cory and I hone our craft? Yes.As for the point YOU are trying to make: are you honestly telling me that a comic's quality is defined by how many years it has been going on?
Um, she's not named after the food. She's named after Sir Francis Bacon, the philosopher. You know how Calvin and Hobbes were both named after famous European philosophers? (John Calvin and Thomas Hobbes, respectively.) The author of that comic obviously wanted to keep the theme going. I think it's a very fitting name for her, actually.SweetShark said:Yeah....I want to feel the happiness and sadness for these specific comics, but I havetwo reasons not:Rainboq said:On the topic of tributes to Calvin & Hobbes, here have some Bacon & Hobbes.

1. RobotChicken alternative ending of Calvin & Hobbes:
2. Calvin and her wife named their girl.........Bacon? Really?
A more suitable title it would be "Bacon and Tiger", cause, you know, Tigers love meat, hehehehehehehe....
*waits to see how convoluted this will get and then starts handing out tissues to all the people who looked at Bacon and Hobbes*Quazimofo said:But if you incur a game of chance, then properly guess the proper brand of lollipop that you would normally get on Chinese new year (not the brand you get when wearing a fedora in place of a viking hat), then you get the double jump back. Unless you screw it up, in which case you also lose one of your blades, but how many lollipop brands are there to chose from?BehattedWanderer said:SonicWaffle said:Clearly you're playing it wrong. You didn't even mention dropping Pandora's head on the triple-word score or having to wear a viking helmet on every third Tuesday lest you be deducted points (unless it's Chinese New Year, in which case you get double points and a lollipop)Well, obviously, yeah. To say nothing of the way one has to hop backwards on one foot while swearing the Oath, and if you mess it up, you have to go through the Hades gauntlet again, but this time, without the double jump.Trucken said:Yeah, but the points-scoring zone is in the Invisible Sector, which means you have to do it blindfolded.
