Most of the time, it's not very tasteful. Just look at about every female character ever created. Admittedly a fair few movies are like this too, but games are an easier target.

I don't really have a problem with nudity in a game, but time to time, I have sisters that play (or watch if there just interested in the story) a game that I get. And I don't want them to play a game that has this in it. When I played Bayonetta it was really awkward. lol

But overall, I think that games should be aloud to have nudity in it, games have a rating system, they should pay more attention to them.

I'm sorry, but god damn source that right now. I don't believe that for a moment, so either clarify that you're just trying to make a sarcastic point, or source it, because bullshit.

So my question this morning is why do people have a problem with Erotism and or nudity in video games?

When you look at any other type of art forms (yes i believe video games is art but that isn't the issue i want to talk about in this thread ) like drawing/paintings , music , litterature , theater/drama/acting ,etc... there is nudity/ erotism in all of them. There are tons of nude/ sexual theme painting , there are erotic books , nudity in theater/television , and sexual theme in every type of music ( Pop , hip-hop , rock , metal , hell death metal talk about rape all the time ) . But why in video games its looked down upon ? I know some people will say , "well i don't want to see video games characters having sex or naked ewww " well then don'T buy it stick with games rated Everyone to Teen OR close your eyes ( lol ? ) . If you don't like erotic books , then you will jsut not buy/read those books.

So what do you think about this? What is the problem with erotism/nudity in video games?

Your turn.
To answer your first question 'why is it looked down apon' is simple, video games is the newest form of art/entertainment/media, and as such plays to our most basic instincts so far (looked upon by the uneducated observer, eg. the general public), so when nudity comes into games, for them, its to get young people off for sex, not to promote art (and they're mostly right).

I think the real issue though is limiting exposure of this to young people as much as possible, and this avenue is a less visited upon one, by most people 40/50+ (there's a discrepensey allowed in that age bracket, for those in their teens in the 70s and 80s, who also played video games, which were far less common back then of course), so their naturally a stronger push against any form of inappropriate sexual imagery, since they can't see methods of stopping younger people watching it.

Do I think there is a problem with this? No. Do I understand the lay person's concerns? Yes. We all know any one of us with a decent internet connection can go on the computer, and download virtually any video game without decent DRM, and it could contain nudity, how do people stop that? They can't, so if there's nudity in video games, this abuse can happen once again, but I say its worth the risk, I'm going to guess that roughly 50% give or take 5% of people, who play video games are 18 years or older, the industry is that old now, and excluding those who've put their controllers down, the rest have kept up, so I say, they deserve to have that content if they want it, further more the right to free speech extends to other forms of media, so video games should be no exception.

The witcher 2 did this in the most tasteful way I've seen yet, for what that's worth. I think 'mature content' holds more potential shock value when it's 'forbidden' and 'taboo' and placed on a pedestal. Try to keep it reasonable and don't make a huge fuss, mmkay?

Because games are rarely mature about it. It's almost always in that "Ohh look our games has sex. See? Tits! Teeheehee, aren't we naughty, eh?" sort of way that makes me ashamed to be seen played it.

You can rabbit on about how games are a totally mature medium enjoyed primarily by adults until the cows come home. The sexual stuff is still being made to appeal to 15 year old boys.

Also, sex + uncanny valley = bad.

I liked how Witcher 2 did it:
"Yeah, she's topless. You gotta problem with that?"

And besides the (male) protagonist is shirtless for half of the prologue too; so YAY for polish, gender neutrality.......

EDIT:

Personally I don't think nudity should just be in any game. Only if it adds to the story. In mass effect however it doesn't really add to the story. You can bring up the arguement that having a relationship adds to your character development. But lets be serious. 99% of the gamers just want to see boobs...[bb]

By that logic, you are claiming that NOONE got their Shepard laid in ME2, because they cut out the nudity (Or Dragon Age 2, for that matter). I can personally tell you, that that is not true. Mass Effect is an RPG. Players did the relationship thing, if they were roleplaying. NOT for boobs.

I honestly believe you when you say that you do it for the role playing. I wouldn't believe you if you were a 12 year old kid with a hormone imbalance. :)

Actually, I've talked a 13 year old complaining about how their parents didn't let them play ME2 because of the non-existant sex scenes, when he didn't care for the sex, he just wanted the story and character development and shiz. I was genuinely suprised, because I share your view. People who don't RP in Mass Effect probably just wanted to see boobs. And were highly disapointed.

Also, it can add to the story. *points to thane*

On Topic: When the game industry grows up and stops being children around the issue of sex in games, is when sex in games is going to be appropriate. Right now games that do it right are gems in a sea of immaturity.

There are no pee-pees on the statues in the Vatican or whatever and sculpture has been around for a long time now.

Video games are still young and the society is still (in majority sadly) uncomfortable with them, people still don't know where to class video games (and by people, I mean the players as mush as the non-players).

If a 12 year old can play through the entirety of Mass Effect just to see some side-boobage, he/she can probably just google "side boobs teehee". Don't underestimate kids, man. ;)

Besides I liked how Mass Effect 2 and Dragon Age 2 did it anyway. They only show anything remotely kinky for "sex scenes" of relationships that are based (at least) mostly around sex appeal, and NOT around love or affection. I'm thinking of Jack (the first scene), Miranda, Jacob and Isabela.

Compare those to like Tali or Anders' scene. Full on boner-killing mushy stuff.

Yes they do. They have all the pee-pees they want.

On the cruise ship I just got back from I saw a giant-ass picture of Leda and the Swan actually doing it. It was on a carnival ship.

And yet Mass Effect hardly has a side boob and actually gets noticed?

Unfortunatly the media views games as toys rather than as art.

I think the problem of parents assuming games are for kids and reacting violently against sexual content is receding, as games really are coming of age at last. Presumably because it's now such a massively lucrative and successful industry, gaming is starting to be seen as a medium for entertainment just like film and literature, and not as toys. Although there's still some way to go.

But honestly, I don't like actual sex scenes in games simply because they don't look good. Technologically, games still have some way to go before they can make physical contact look like physical contact, I think. For instance, the romance storylines in Dragon Age: Origins were fantastic, very well written and great fun. But the sex scenes made me cringe. They reminded me of the sex scene in Team America. :-/

There's nothing wrong with it.
If you don't want to play games that have it, then don't play them.

IMO just like movies, it depends on the game. Sometimes it's just not appropriate, like imagine if FFXIII suddenly had Lightning and what's his face having sex. It just doesn't jive. On the other hand in Fable or Heavy Rain I think it's totally fine to have sexual content.

As for MMORPGs... well it's pretty ridiculous that the female characters wear plate bikinis. I'm sure most guys playing don't mind but MMOs are a type of gaming genre that probably brings in the most female gamers (aside from casual type games) and I can't think they're all too pleased about having to play a fairly sexualized/slutty character (of course some will enjoy it too).

I think It should be treated with the same respect as art or film. I'm not saying it should be a defining factor or anything ridiculous, but if people don't care for their children seeing nudity in a movie or in a painting, they have no logical reason to think games will affect their children differently.

I just played LA Noire so its still fresh in my brain when you investigate the Werewolf murders. All the people he killed were naked. And it didn't bother me at all. It did make me wonder though, LA Noire caused almost no controversy I can remember about those scenes. Maybe because they were dead and no sex had taken place. I don't know.

Lets all just get naked.

The probelm with nudity in video games is that the media tends to look at video games as mere childrens playthings, not art in the way movies and books can be art.
I've always found it troubling that the media is allowed to look at games as whatever is most convenient for them at a given time. When there's been a recent shooting incident, games are sophisticated murder simulators that can drive people to insanity. But when a game contains sex (or in a case from last year, the Taliban), they are nothing more than frivolous little playthings that shouldn't be allowed to display/discuss such topics not because they'll influence people's thinking in any way, but because they're nothing more than glorified children's toys. If the media is going to harp on about games all the time, why can't they at least be consistent as to why they're doing it?
