Wait, does the OP really think there aren't a lot of games with nudity and sex etc?

Just like any other media there are a lot of games without and a lot of games with... I don't really see a big deal here.

As long as its put in tastefully, and not just "cause we can", I see no problem with it. A little nudity here and there never killed anyone.

The problem with nudity in games:

Have you ever tried playing a adult Japanese Visual Novel? No, not the hentai games, the really good ones like Fate/stay Night, Utawaremono, Cross Channel and the likes. If you have, how many people have you told this to? You see, while its completely legitimate to read a novel with a sex scene in it, the moment you mention the word "game", its distasteful.

So you see, the problem isn't with the games, or the people playing them. Its the social aspect of it. You have to go around being ashamed of playing these games. And because of this, Big companies really can't afford to dabble in this area in fear of not selling their games.

That said, I do believe that it will only take one Triple A company to make a game containing nudity, and doing it well, for the stigma to disappear (IE: Half Life 3 with a naked Alex or something).

Well, I personally don't like it because usually when sex is added to a video game it's used a pathetic attempt to pander to teenage libido. I find it insulting to my intelligence when a game developer or publisher believes that they can make me buy their game because it has a character in it that I'm supposed to be attracted to. It's also a huge red flag to me that the game is probably of terrible quality that they have to resort to this underhanded pandering to make people buy it. They're trying to sell it to people who are so stupid that boobs will make them forget how terrible the game is.

But even if there is sex or nudity in a game that is not just there to make the game sell (which is very rare) I still don't like it. It's the problem of the uncanny valley I think, it's disturbing to me that I'm expected to be attracted by what is essentially a collection of polygons. It always looks far too contrived to me.

Perhaps in the future video games will be able to deal with the issue in a more mature way which isn't designed to be just pornography, then it won't be so disturbing.

The only big issue I see is that video games are always the equivalent of CGI in a movie; it's all by a computer. When we see nudity on the movie screen, it's a more natural representation.

Parents don't want to raise their kids anymore. Put them in front of a pc/tv/console and be done with it. But they want their kids to learn morale and virtue. So they don't want nudity or violence...

Personally I don't think nudity should just be in any game. Only if it adds to the story. For example: dragon age 1. They need a baby so they have sex at the end. In mass effect however it doesn't really add to the story. You can bring up the arguement that having a relationship adds to your character development. But lets be serious. 99% of the gamers just want to see boobs...

In duke nukem it kinda adds to the story in the sense that duke nukem is a pill popping, girl humping psychopath with a lust for alien blood and cheesy one liners. But duke nukem isn't really a game I would let my 12 year old play.
Yeah, I don't even play Duke Nukem while my step-children are awake. Or Dante's Inferno. Hell, I am beginning to question if they should be awake while I play any first person shooters, because my step-daughter has started saying some pretty bad things...

Most people see it as children's toys.

MY issue with it is that game characters tend to look and move very artificially, making any sex and such very, very uncanny valley.
Get past that and my caring stops.

The probelm with nudity in video games is that the media tends to look at video games as mere childrens playthings, not art in the way movies and books can be art.
So when any from of nudity shows up in a video game fox news and the like and the parents get up in arms about it lest little timmy realises girls don't have pee-pees.
This is sort of the reason. In reality a game's nudity would slide under the radar without a second thought if the news wouldn't report on it. I will admit I bought a game because it was in the news about nudity/violence (or whatever) to see what the fuss was about. Games get quite a bit of free publicity when it appears in the news.

Generally, when people put nudity into something, it's not exactly done with tact or finesse.
This is the reason. If it was done well there would be a leg to stand on when the shit storm from the media hit the fan. The same is true for movies and books. Lets compare two movies that I thought of off the top of my head: Not Another Teen Movie and 300. The former just had some topless chick for no reason. I am sure it was trying to be done for comedic effect, but it was still pointless. In 300 the sex scene was actually symbolic and moved the plot along.

Depends on how sex is treated in games. I could appreciate if sex is used to further a storyline (which nobody has done yet) or to enhance an aspect of a character (other than their obvious need to have sex).

The problem, and it happens a lot, is that late adopters to a popular medium see see it only something for the youth of the culture. As stereotypes go, you can't get more stereotypical then the idea that no one under the age of 23 is mature enough to handle nudity and sexuality in a respectable manner. While that is somewhat true, the degree is greatly exaggerated as stereotypes often are.

Truth is we don't always handle sexuality in the most mature of manners, not all of us anyway. Some of us even blur the line, making something that to some might seem unintentionally immature. This reflects negatively on the rest of us who would be able to handle properly like in a good french comic or something. Some of us even fear or are restricted from attempting due to the cultural stigma attached to nudity and the nature of our product.

Eventually we'll be able to do it, I hope so at least.

this is a point the is brought up ALOT, the fact that the M rating should be like R rating movie/TV series (some channels to R some to M) and the fact that some one getting beaten with a pipe, two ppl fucking and the movie/ TV show contains more then 5 fucks in it all constitute an R rating. however the fact is that gaming is a much different industry then the other visual entertainments. the fact that many many games were pushing the violence envelope before there was a game rating system, which i guess made it so violence was acceptable. where there was retro sex based video games there defiantly was not as many as the ones based around violence (even sonic and mario had some violence in it... they wernt arguing about law to judge bowser). this being said the fact that so many games are so scared shitless to get an AO rating that if ESRB even looks at them funny they will back down and make it less sexual or less violent because AO games do not sell, there simply is no one besides the Japanese willing to say "fuck what rating i get we are making this game". also cinema and TV have been around much longer then video games.

My issue with nudity is usually the way the camera pans over the characters ever so lovingly. When I'm watching a movie, I am not projecting myself onto the characters so I could care less about the camera work. In a game though, I AM seeing myself as the lead character for the time being.

As a woman, it's awkward because those scenes are obviously not made for me. It almost feels like I accidentally stumbled upon a porno set and was told to join in.

I especially hate it when romance is mandatory in games. I want to play an adventure or a horror game. I don't want to romance men or women most of the time when I'm playing unless the romantic option is really compelling to me and I want a strong relationship with them, regardless of the sex at the end.

I remember playing Heavy Rain, the game actually got MAD at me for not bonking Madison. I was playing Ethan as a man who was totally focused on his kids so having sex with this chick who has really only ever played nursemaid for him a few times seemed out of place. But apparently I needed to have sex with her to 'forgive her' for something.

I liked the way God of War had nudity. They were making a game based on Greek mythology, and there's a huge amount of nudity and sex in ancient Greek art and stories. It only even drew attention to the nudity once or twice, the rest of the time it's just people bearing flesh because that's what they did. It fitted with the whole aesthetic they were after.

Besides, it has a big fat 18 in a red circle on the front. Plus anyone complaining about God of War for the sex and nudity is someone I don't want to be within a chain's reach of.
Pretty much this. I love how even though there was nudity in the game, they didn't ZOOM in the bloody camera or make a big deal out of it like most games every time a woman takes her top off.

Nudity is fine, but I don't need the camera to be 3 inches from the woman's nip, thank you very much devs.

Actually, I've talked a 13 year old complaining about how their parents didn't let them play ME2 because of the non-existant sex scenes, when he didn't care for the sex, he just wanted the story and character development and shiz. I was genuinely suprised, because I share your view. People who don't RP in Mass Effect probably just wanted to see boobs. And were highly disapointed.

Also, it can add to the story. *points to thane*
a man falling into despair from falling in love when he has a terminal disease that will take his life in a couple of months.

On Topic: When the game industry grows up and stops being children around the issue of sex in games, is when sex in games is going to be appropriate. Right now games that do it right are gems in a sea of immaturity.
I remember him my sister romanced him for the lols and I generally enjoyed the stuff he worried about and everything
O.T. I don't see a problem with it I mean if it's rated M then I don't see why it shouldn't be allowed (of course it has to have some point not just nudity for the sake of nudity)

meh, nothing wrong with nudity in theory, but most of the time it's awkwardly tacked on to romances in games (and films). It's like, have two conversations, do a sidequest (also awkwardly tacked on most of the time), have sex.

I haven't played a decent romance subplot in a video game since Baldur's Gate 2. Well, maybe KOTOR
