Escape to the Movies: Kingsman: The Secret Service - Can Lightning Strike Again?

Huh, never even heard of this. After the disappointment of Jupiter Ascending this looks like it may well be worth a shot. Just as long as it doesn't lead to Colin Firth being the next Liam Neeson; he's a great actor and it would be a real shame to lose him to endless shit action films.

I was half expecting Bob reviewing 50 Shades of Grey this week. It is far outside his comfort zone, and he most likely hates it on principle alone, but it is already poised to be the biggest cinematographic event this year (outside of the geek pop culture).

OT: I had no idea of this movie, but I will have to pay attention to it now. The Kickass movies are full of issues, but at least they are effective when it comes to indulging in guilty pleasures...

Its probably because he wanted to do a fun/good movie for his last Escape to the Movies here.

So this movie caught my attention because I am a huge fan of the old Avengers TV show (that's Steed and Peel, not Spiderman and Iron Man). I'm surprised that, despite the show's obscurity, I haven't heard any comparisons yet. The trailers reminded me of my favorite episode, "The Correct Way to Kill" (which can be found on Hulu). The mostly positive reviews of Kingsmen give me hope that they might try to make a good remake of Avengers. The 90's movie was fundamentally flawed in writing, tone, and casting. Ralf Finnes and Uma Thurman are great actors, but they don't fit the roles. Finnes isn't the happy-go-lucky Steed that only cares slightly more about the hidden spy than where to find a good Chardonnay and Thurman isn't Mrs. Emma Peel (pronounced Miss S-M appeal), the strong independent woman who stays calm and collected in every situation while saving Steed more often than he saves her.

Anyway, interested in following this movie and seeing if more like it follow. Thanks for the review Bob.

I've been confused by that too. Why haven't anyone been mentioning The Avengers when talking about this film? I watch a trailer and I wonder where Patrick Macnee is?

I couldn't help but notice that there was no video transcript with a star rating at the bottom for this video. It is also the only video in a few months whose subtitle is ambiguous about MovieBob's opinion of the movie. I can't help but feel this is not a coincidence.

That may be because this is his last episode.

I'm really starting to hate Moviebob's misanthropy. The Westboro Baptist Church may be terrible people but they're still people. I don't have to like them to not want to see them murdered. (an image in the spoiler not a spoiler for the movie)

I agree with you wholeheartedly. People are way too quick to hate and judge others as worthy of death, especially while condemning others for committing acts of hatred and murder and still thinking that they themselves are any better. People forget that though Fred Phelps was a horrible human being, he still had family and friends who cared about him. Celebrating his death like you just won a sporting event is one of the most dickish things someone can do.

Bob reveling over the "church fight" is the kind of thing I find really frightening about my fellow young people in our society. Yes, Homophobia is bad, but it, along with racism and misogyny, is way too high on our hierarchy of sins. Who do we most want to see beaten, brutalized, and killed? Murderers, rapists, child pornographers; no, people who don't agree with our narrow social/political beliefs.

Well this is the last review Bob's going to do on the Escapist and honestly I would have preferred it be 50 Shades of Grey (for what I hope are obvious reasons) but I suppose this is fine. I used to enjoy your reviews and columns alongside Yahtzee and Jim Sterling, but honestly I thought there was a noted decline in your work over the last few months. Perhaps it was a simple bleeding over of your blog/twitter/etc. into your other work, but all in all I just haven't enjoyed your work anywhere near as much as I used to.

Regardless, you did once give me quite a bit of enjoyment and for that I unreservedly thank you.

The Fifty Shades movie is just really dull, you couldn't get anywhere near as much review material as you can with Kingsman.

Wow...*one* movie has an American villain and British good guys, and Bob can't handle it. The number of movies where American goodies wail on a British villain is frankly so high it's gone beyond cliché, but one that reverses it and it's a huge deal.

I thought it was a very enjoyable movie, well worth the watch.

That's kinda why it's a big deal, though...

That is...bizarre.

As controversial as Bob could be at times, he still had 2 very popular weekly video segments and his Intermission column. Considering the loss of Jim relatively recently, this seems like a bizarre move by the Escapist. You can't build your entire business model around Zero Punctuation.

Exactly my thoughts. People like Bob will go ballistic over the Westboro nutjobs (who I find to be total assholes though my being Christian has nothing to do with anything, but I figured I'd mention it), but at the end of the day, those assholes merely SAY horrible things. They haven't physically attacked anyone I know of or killed anyone.

And yet, if a movie were made where the main characters slaughtered a bunch of terrorists like ISIS or muslim nutjobs who don't just say mean things about gay people and women, but routinely torture and kill them, Bob and his ilk would get all squeamish and uncomfortable about it, saying we're painting all muslims with a broad brush. And yet, Bob conflates the Westboro types with anyone who so much as leans to the right without a second thought. A little consistency would be appreciated, is all I'm saying.
