Escape to the Movies: The Lego Movie

All this talk and praise about how the Lego Movie plays around with "expectations", it's kind of a bummer knowing that there's still this one universal expectation that even this film still delivers on with no sign of doing anything different. The guys get to be the heroes who save the day while the women play as sidekicks who are only there to root for them. Judging from the trailers we've seen so far, I'm guessing the film will probably portray Wyldstyle as a competent, head strong person who can hold her own against the odds, but won't be the kind of character who goes through any kind of growth outside of liking the male hero more and leaving everything up to him in order to save the day.
This is the kind of thing that just sets off all kinds of "lazy" alarms when the writers of a movie think that by having a female character kick a lot of ass is all that is needed to qualify her as a "Strong Female Character". Now, I understand how the writers would look at this as an improvement over her being the damsel in distress, but having to tag around with a male hero spouting dialogue like "You're the most important person in the universe" and "I believe in you", there's only one purpose her character was specifically written for. Him.

Okay I'll admit I was becoming a bit of a cynical bastard. Reboots, remakes, re-imagination, play it safe, play to the lowest common denominator, don't take a chance that one person in the whole theater will not get it. I was really losing my faith that Hollywood could bring back the stuff that used to make going to the movies such a wonderful thing.
Am I ever glad that people had the balls or I guess it would be the bricks to do this film. Impressive for a production team to remember that art requires risks and the risks pay off well for this movie. I hope it makes so much money the suits slap the next production team that wants to play it too safe.
But beyond just a film it also restores faith that kids will go back to enjoying play in the real world instead of just get stuck in their electronic devices. If the film sparks the imagination of kids then the future is looking pretty good with it saying defy the instructions think outside of the box.

well ill be damned. when i saw the trailer it looked rather stupid but apparently its not that stupid. shame is that too many cinemas here in hong hong show this movie in cantonese. so maybe i have to wait until its out on dvd as i have to wait now for frozen.

I probably will have to see this movie at some point. Although I don't watch many movies and have still yet to the first hobbit movie. I plan on watch that at some point as well.

Okay, I really want to see this movie now. As for my favorite Lego set as a kid? I don't remember having one (though I kinda want to get some Lego sets). I do fondly remember the Bionicle series, though. Hero Factory is okay, it's just not as interesting. Though I bought the bad guy toys because they looked cooler than the ones for the heroes. Then I cannibalized them for my own creations. (And don't try to tell me you didn't do the same thing with those types of buildable figures!)
I actually did exactly what Bob said; watched the first minute of the review, went to see the movie immediately after and then came back to finish the review. So glad that I did. It was amazing, though there were points where my date and I were dying laughing and were the only ones in the theater doing so, so it may not be as funny as I believe it to be.

This is true as well but it's pretty clear that Bob is pretty biased towards Marvel. I mean out of all the shows he chose to do weekly reviews of he picked the incredibly mediocre AoS (no I'm not jumping on the hate bandwagon, I legitimately wanted to like it so I did put up with it for 5 episodes)? Not only that, if I remember correctly, Iron Man 3 was apparently amazing to him. Who knows, maybe he just likes his super hero movies to be lighter in tone but I'm a bit skeptical.King Whurdler said:

Also, Iron Man 3 was probably the best blockbuster last year, and is definitely one of the best Iron Man films.
Also for the Silver Age comic comment, none of these films are silver age anything, they have more in common with the Ultimate universe than the silver age stuff.
I know he doesn't think it's a good show, which is why I don't understand why he's doing a weekly article on it. Why not pick something entertaining that people actually want to watch. It's only February and I really, really doubt anything can top this movie to size up as my movie of the year. It's by far my favorite 'fun for the whole family' movie, I can't say anything Pixar made can compare to this movie.
And Liam Neeson absolutely nailed the role of Bad Cop, but of course every single character couldn't have been done better.

This was actually my first official LEGO set and not just one of those LEGO containers with a bunch of "random" colored LEGO pieces... It was also the first LEGO series, in gereral, where I had all of the sets that ran with this series... which I ended up combining it with the Life on Mars LEGO sets later on...

When I was buying these for myself with the money I was mostly getting from my grandmother at the time, I was also receiving the DC comic line of Bionicle and would, later, buy the first three Bionicle movies with my own money...
