I've gone from hating the idea that a Michael Bay exists to actually kind of liking him. Some of this is because he's curbed some of his more annoying tendencies (like the comic reaction to a major bit of destruction "Someone call 911") and some of it is how he just keeps getting better and better and presenting his action sequences. He's never going to be an intelligent director, but he works the light entertainment action romp extremely well... and I think he has a sincere respect for the men and women of the military and space program that shines through. If he really seemed to be advocating any political position, I'd call his films propaganda because they hit all the notes of well-produced propaganda; but he seems so politically agnostic. Quite often, there's not even truly bad guys in his films (at least of the human variety), with heavy characters being revealed as doing their job in a way that made sense to them and even joining up with the goodies once they all realize they're on the same side.
Does he make good movies? No, not really. He's got talent, but The Island is probably the only movie he's made that even attempted to carry an intellectual idea... before he just decided to blow a bunch of shit up.
