So how are noobs viewed here, and when do you cease being a noob?
As far as I'm aware not differently at all, I'm fairly new and nobody seems to care.
It's all based on good discussion here (for the most part - don't get into any obvious wars like the console debates, stuff like this you can probably learn from the rest of the internetz)

You generally gain cred by being around, making yourself seen, contributing to discussions, and things like that.

I'm known for my threads about sex and relationships, which generally involve polls. If you see a thread about sex on here, it's either mine, or will have a comment by me at some point.

If you're just going to post in other people's threads, just pick an avatar that stands out a bit, and you'll be fine. I'd change mine, but I've had it since day one, and people recognize me by it now. If you're going to make your own threads, try sticking to a theme, or try to post things that have high discussion value. That's really how you get known. It's pretty hard to actually have bad cred here, so unless you're aiming for that, you'll be accepted by most of us.

Anyway, more importantly, where is Doctor Cox!?!

OT: Post count doesn't matter. If I had the chance. I'd reset my post count or have it permanently at 0

Hi. I'm new.

No, this is not your dad's ?Hey, imma newb here guys, please welcome me?-thread, I just want to know the lay of the land. So how are noobs viewed here, and when do you cease being a noob?

I'm a longtime lurker. I've been here since Yahtzee started in 2007. I remember watching Heavenly Sword and Other Stuff one of the first days of high school that August. But enough of that. If I want to gain my Escapist-cred I need to know how it is measured here. Post count? Detailed profil? Join date (I'm screwed)? Or is it your classic "being an intelligent and pleasant person instead of whatever everyone else on the Internet is being"?

Yours truly,
Me
I'm in a similar situation. I lurk in the shadows, stealth post, then slink away quietly for another few months. I have yet to start a thread though, but its territory I should probably explore.

Noobs aren't attacked here. A**holes are. Be polite, follow the rules and there is nothing wrong with being new. You'll find your Escapist niche.

I know I did! XD

Damn it!

Oh well. Try to be interesting and coherent in your thoughts, avoid offending people[footnote]The classic rule, "if you've got nothing nice to say then say nothing at all" is the best approach to this[/footnote] and enjoy your time here.

Don't be a dick and you'll get on just fine :D

It's all about the join date, people just feed you that intelligent and pleasant person line when they don't make the ranks of the elite.

Kidding of course it's all about the post count. Now go get addicted to forum games for a few months and come back with 20,000 posts.

Take it from me, I haven't been providing meaningful insight for nearly four years now.
And we all know manaman as the guy who stole the avatar that I was going to use! :D
For which we have only your word....

I'm pretty new here myself but I wouldn't worry at all. To me, this place is a safe haven for gamers and game enthusiasts. Full of really interesting people too. Not to sound sappy, but I think this site has helped me mature more and boost my love for this medium. I doubt you'll get chastised at all for being a "newb". Worst case scenario: You get grammar-nazi'd.

Ah, I'm beaten by the combined efforts of everyone though. :D XD

And he's on vacation, the Hitcher is my new thing for the month. Same goes for anything that can be turned into an avatar and/or title from anything related to "The Mighty Boosh."

Post count - [Almost[footnote]It decides only how much of a troll we think you are when you post trollish material. Mind, having a low post count doesn't mean you are a troll and having a high post count doesn't mean you aren't.[/footnote]] Entirely unimportant
Profile detail - Entirely unimportant.
Join date - Entirely unimportant.
Being an intelligent and pleasant person - Priceless

Honest to God, the only thing that matters here is that you stimulate intelligent discussion, keep a lid on personal insults and maintain an orderly and sophisticated argument. If you can manage to do that while having good character and including your views on the matter you will fit in just right.

Welcome to the Escapist. The basement is off limits to all non-admins and non-mods, just so you know, I think they occasionally let in the odd Pub club member too.

EDIT: Snipped. And, make sure you read the rules and understand them. There are far too many people on here who have never read them and then get pissed off when they're called out on it.

Since everyone else has covered the (non-existent) ranking system and the basement, I'll just say this:

Always search before creating new threads, especially if you're just looking for an answer to a query. Chances are it's already been discussed and you could find your answer lurking in the forums already. If you're looking to discuss a topic, then check to see that it's not already being discussed.

The forum rules should have this covered, and it's a rule one should abide by on any forum, but the sheer amount of "What's the deal with My Little Pony?" threads is crazy.

Oh, and welcome aboard.

I don't know; I'm a..... "noob", and I consider myself quite radical.
But I guess it depends on your intellectual value, your avatar, and your use of spell check.

I utterly despise noobs in all forms. Newbs, on the other hand, I welcome.
And, a noob will never stop being a noob. That's what makes them a noob.

Coincidentally, were you aware that the words "newb" and "noob" [http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Noob&defid=2568674] do NOT mean the same thing?
What's a Noobian?

Intellectual Value? Ah crap.

Actually just started myself getting into the forums, though joined a bit back, and most people seem pretty gosh darn cool. I like the cut of their gib.

If you want to be recognized I have to admit that I tend to associate people with their avatars, so use whatever unique, and ideally not hideous, avatar you want.

Also, the only thing I ever judge people for is the content of their posts... and admittedly spelling and grammar.

It's "jib" and refers to a triangular staysail set ahead of the foremast of a sailing vessel. Huzzah for nautical references! :D

Well I've already pointed out that I don't have any intellectual value. So that was kind of like kicking a small defenceless puppy. But that's cool man. I'll be over here.
