Wow, you don't hang much on forums or read articls, do you?
They are taking flak ("Badwill" if you want to be formal) for the MEgavideo-takedown, and the badwill for taking down a highly respected website like the Esacpist (a website that has won several awards) would be huge. Believe it or not, but the "government" DO have to react to peoples opinions, especially when the media get ahold of it.
That was sarcasm meant to point out that they are not afraid of a shitstorm. You might have missed the OP saying something about how even a popular site like Youtube could get shut down. If you think about it I think you will have to agree and say that Youtube is more popular than The Escapist even though this site has won awards. If we combine the user base of all the other sites that have been shut down recently there are more people using those than this site.Realitycrash said:Noone. Said. A. Thing?Yopaz said:Yeah. Neither videobb nor mediafire have been shut down, and he didn't say there wasn't a shitstorm when megaupload went down either, what's your problem?Yopaz said:Yeah. Oh, I do disagree with SOPA and ACTA, don't get me wrong. Making money off a show where you showcase various pieces of art is perfectly legitimate. Copying a style of art is wrong. SOPA and ACTA don't distinguish between the two and throw them in the same bucket.JesterRaiin said:Exactly.Thyunda said:And in a world where anything goes, why be original? You can make more money printing a Bart Simpson t-shirt than making your own design.JesterRaiin said:Yep, but just imagine - in the world of total "copyrightism" there's no place for creation. No matter what you'll try to do there's risk that someone, somewhere already copyrighted that or something similar. That's what i'm talking about... :|
Unfortunately, with every SOPA or ACTA we're closer to this reality.
No. Copyright is an automatic right, applying to any significant works created by anyone. What it does is that if you write something, paint something, film something, etc., no one can make a copy of that without your permission... unless you denounce your copyright.Thyunda said:You CAN copyright ideas. That's what the whole point of copyright is.
You forgot your sarcasm tags.Thyunda said:But that ruling is totally fair. I mean, I assumed the two posters were by the same creator. It's the photographer's style, it's totally fair to slap somebody else away from it.JesterRaiin said:Oh the ignorance, sweet ignorance.TorqueConverter said:This site does not condone illegal activity. It's not going to get shut down because it simply is doing nothing wrong.
No illegal activities on the Escapist ? Well, i have a bad news for you.
Contrary to popular belief, the law isn't set in stone - it's set of rules that can be interpreted in different ways. Under SOPA, ACTA or similar acts and agreements one can't be sure what is allowed and what isn't.

If SOPA didn't make it easy to block the Escapist from America with one complaint, they would have.SmashLovesTitanQuest said:Why the hell would they shut down this website? Contributers are so hardcore anti-piracy here that its a surprise the site didnt come out in support of SOPA.
Agreed. The problem we have is that genre-savvy (so to speak) lobbyists are deceiving totally oblivious politicians to push their own agenda, and their enforcers are more like guard dogs than actual officers, and will savage whoever they're unleashed on, regardless of actual guilt.JesterRaiin said:I know that you're disagreeing, Zee Kaptein.Thyunda said:Oh, I do disagree with SOPA and ACTA, don't get me wrong. I'm simply pointing out, that we shouldn't relax. We don't live in exactly sanest world and the future isn't bright either. There's possibility that completely legal activities won't be considered illegal tomorrow ?
Yes, ignore the Webbies that the site has won/been nominated for in the past.Hookman said:I don't see a reason why they would. As a site, we are nowhere near as high-profile as megaupload and while there may be some copyrighted material on here it is not enough for a site-wide shutdown.

Yes I just quoted from 4Chan. I think it should apply more than just /b/ but most of the Internet.4Chan said:The stories and information posted here are artistic works of fiction and falsehood.
Only a fool would take anything posted here as fact.
